Application filed April 30, 1917.
To all viti/"tom t may concern.'
Se it 1niown that l, lsiiac irl. Haas. a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Bedsteads, of which the followingl is a specification.
The present invention relatesto improvements in bedsteads and particularly to an improved lock or iitting for connecting the head and foot sections with the frame or mattress supporting parts.
` The invention is particularly adapted for use with metal beds and in the accompanying' drawing is shown as embodied in a three-piece bed.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive means which will produce a rigid connection between the frame and head and foot sections of the bed whereby the frame will be rmly supported and the several partslocked against accidental displacement.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure l is a perspective view of a threepiece metal bed embodying` the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail view in horizontal section, on an enlarged scale, through one of the posts or standards.
Fig. 3 is a sectionalrview on the line 3 3 of Fig 2.
Fig. a is a similar View taken on the line 1 -t of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the improved bracket and lock device in perspective.
Referring to the drawing, A, B respectively designate the head and foot sections of a bed, each comprising as usual suitable posts or standards C and intermediate connecting parts.
The frame of the bed includes end and side rails D, E of angle iron connected as hereinafter more particularly described and a. wire mattress or mattress support F which as shown is connected to and extends between the end rails D. As shown the end rails are provided at both ends with downwardly bent portions to the inner faces of the side members of which the side rails E are directly connected as by rivets e. The members F are further connected with the side rails by straps G so that the entire trame forms a single rigid structure that Specification of Letters Patent.

may be bodily separated from the head and foot sections fr, B.
Each post or standard C is provided with a tting or bracket which is 'adapted to support the frame and so engage the members thereof that relative movement between the trame` and head and foot sections prevented except the frame be moved vertically as in asse-mblin or disconnecting the several parts of the bed.
The specific form of fitting or bracket shown comprises two vsimilarly shaped plates H, l which are connected together and to the post by rivet bolts or other fastening means and are so related that they provide a slot adapted to receive the inwardly extending member f of the adjacent downward bent end portion f of an end rail, the depending member CZ of which rail extends through and is supported by a notch formed in the plate l. Each of the plates H, I comprises two members extending substantially at right angles to each other and between which the post or standard C is received. The inner plate H is in direct contact with the post while the plato l is of such relative size that the section thereof which is not directly secured to the post is spaced or separated sui-iiciently from the corresponding member of the plate H to provide the slot above mentioned into which the depending member f and the downwardly extending member Z of the end rail extend.
lt will be seen that the fitting or lock formed as above described not only provides a support for the frame but cooperates with the end and side rails to positively prevent relative horizontal movement in any direction between said frame and the head and foot sections. The walls of the slot formed in the lock or fitting closely embrace the members (Z and f to prevent separation,
in the direction of the length of the side rails, or" the several members of the bed and the inner edge of the member f contacting with the inner face of the plate l below the notch formed in the upper edge thereof, or the Contact between the outer edge of the fitting and the portion 7 of the downwardly bent end of the rail D prevent relative movement between the frame and head and foot sections in the direction 0f the length of the end rails. The bed framel may however be readily disengaged from or engaged with the head and foot sections by movement in a vertical direction.
It Will be evident that instead oi `forminpgf the bracket or fitting from two plates as shown, a single block, properly slotted may be employed.
Having thusl described the invention what is claimed and c esired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. ln a bedstead, the combination oi' a head section, a ioot section, end rails of angle iron having one member extending horizontally and the other extending vertically therefrom, side rails secured to tl e end rails, and bodily separable therewith i'rom the head and ioot sections, and a bracket attached to each post of the head and foot sections and provided With a slot receiving the vertical, depending member of the body oi an end rail, said rail having` bent end portions cooperating with the brackets with which the rail is engaged to prevent movement of the rail in the direction oi' its length relative to Said brackets.
2. The combination with a post or standard of a bedstead, of a bracket secured to the post including two members extending at an angle to each other with the post between them, said bracket providing a verti cal slot extending` to an outer'edge and the upper end thereof, and the bracket member that extends at an angle to said slot having a notch in its upper end in alinement With said slot for the purpose described.
3. rlhe combination with a post or standard o1 a bedstead, of a bracket formedloi two superposed plates ci' substantia ly right angle 'form in cross section, corresponding sections of Said plates being held together and secured to the post, the other sections of said plates being spaced to provide a vertical slot that opens through the top and one edge oi' the bracket7 the section ofthe outer plate that is attached to the post having at its upper end a notch that opens into said slot for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I ailiX my signature.
