WILLIAM. COOPER.

Patented April 23,1872.

UNITED STATES PATENT .QFFIGE.
VVI-LLIAM COOPER, OF Y PSILANTI, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,030, dated April 23, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM COOPER, of Ypsilanti, in the county of Washtenaw and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing- Machines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification. 4
My present invention is intended as an improvement upon the washing machine for which Letters Patent were granted to me November 3',1868; and it consists particularly in the devices whereby the rub-board is kept on the shaft, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section, of my improved washing-machine. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the rub-board; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged section of the center of the rub-board.
A represents the washing-box, provided with a hinged lid, B, on top of which are suitable standards to contain the journals of the cog-wheel O. This wheel is operated back and forth by a lever, E, and gears with a pinion, D, attached to the upper end of a shaft, G, above the lid 13, said shaft passing vertically downward into the box A. That part of the shaft G which passes through the lid B is round, while the balance is square, leaving a shoulder, a, on the shaft immediately below the lid. The entire shaft below this shoulder is, on all four sides, plated with plates b b, and near the lower end of said shaft, on two or more sides, are studs or projections i c. H represents the circular rub-board, provided with radiating beveled or. V-shaped' bars I I on its under side. The plated shaft G passes through a hole in the center of the rub-board H,-and a portion of this hole is provided with angular plates at d, fitting around the shaft close enough to allow the rub-board to move up and down on the same. The rub-board H is prevented from coming off of the shaft by the plates (1 d striking the studs or projectionsi i; and the board is pressed down by a coil-spring, e, surrounding the shaftG between the shoulder a and theboard. The bottom of the box A is provided with radiating ribs or bars I cor responding with those on the rub-board.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
, The combination of the shaft G with shoulder a, plates b b, studs '6 1', spring 0, and board H with the lid of the box, provided with wheel D, Washer :12, and the wheel 0, all as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of February, 1872.
WM. COOPER.
