Description

UNITED STATES PATENT GFFIGE.
JOHN ALFRED PIOKERSGILL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,079; dated August 11,1874; application filed April 15,1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ALFREDl P10K- ERSGILL, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to the fastening of washers to tubs, and has for its object to furnish a device by which means a washer can be lsecured to, and adjusted from, the inside of a tub without touching the outside of the tub at all, which is very desirable where stationary tubs are used, where the outside of the Atub cannot be reached, as the side of the tub against a wall or partition is the side to which it is desired to fasten the washer, and therefore those devices arranged to embrace the outside of the tub cannot be used; and it consists -in arranging the entire fastening deviee'inside of the tub, as will iirst be described, andthe-n pointed out in the claim.
In my drawing accompanying this specication, Figure I represents an ordinary stationary wash-tub, T, which is represented here only to illustrate its relation to my improved fulcrum-post, as is also represented the ordinary dasher. Figs. II, III, and IV represent my said fulcrum-post P seen in three diiferent ways-atwise, edgewise, and endwise. Fig. V represents the metal stud. Fig. VI represents the metal nut and tap-bolt.
P is a post or standard, which may be made of metal, but preferably of wood, with suitable metallic cap and eye fastened to its upper end to form the pivoting place or fulcrum of the lever of the washing-machine for which it is intended. At the other end of the post P a dovetailed groove or slot, G, is cut on one side, and of the proper cross-section to fit over the stud F, Fig. V. At or near the center of the post P an elongated niortise, L, is cut right through the post, of the proper width to allow of the nut and bolt (shown in Fig. VI) iitting therein. F is a stud of metal, preferably brass, which is shaped to t the dovetailed Vslot-groove G of the postB, and hasra hole drilled through it--countersunk to t the headl of ordinary wood-screws. This stud F is secured near the lower part of the inside of the tub T. N is a nut, having ilanges extending both right and left thereof, with suitable holes for wood-screws. This nut N, partly countersunkin the wood of the tub. is fastened by two wood-screws at or near the top of' said tub inside, but always to correspond with the stud F. B is a tap-bolt, having a flat thumbscrew head, under which a leather washer is placed. This bolt is made to fit in the nut N.
The nut N and stud F being fastened to the tub, as above stated, the post P is held over the stud F, fitting the Inortise L over the nut N; then, by pushing the post downward, the stud F enters the slot Gr, retaining the bottom part of the post against the tub T, and, the proper height being determined, the bolt B is screwed in the nut N until the leather washer, coming in contact with the side of the post P, will retain it firmly at top and prevent it rising or falling.
To change the height of the i'ulcrum, it is only necessary to loosen the bolt B a little, to slide the post P up or down, as required, then Yto tighten back the bolt B.
To remove the post P, the bolt B is taken olf, the postis raised up, when it is found quite free, and can be removed and put away.
Disclaiming anything which I may have herein described only for the sake of illustrating my invention,
What I claim as my invention is- In washing-machines where a dasher and hand-lever are employed, the post P, having the lever H and rod d attached thereto, and provided with slots G and L, in combination with the stud F, nut N, and bolts B, secured to the inner upright portion of the tub T, whereby the post can be adjusted to any desired height, as and for the purpose specified.
