Description
E. scHoFlELIL Wash-Boilers.
NO. 142,518. Patented September 2,1873.
EDWIN SGHOFIELD, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.-
IMPRQVEMENT IN WASH-BOlLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. llg, dated September 2, 1873; application filed July 19, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that vI, EDWIN ScnoFInLD, of Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Wash-Boilers; and I do hereby decla-re that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionr of the construction .and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of my wash-boiler in plan viewwith the cover removed, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of thesame with the cover in position.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a wash-boil er, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents an ordinary wash-boiler, provided With a cover, B. In this wash-boiler is flrmly soldered a false bottom, C, which is provided with an oblong aperture, of any suitable dimensions, in the center. l) represents a plate of the same general shape, but somewhat larger than the aperture in the false bottom U. This plate D is lpassed through the aperture, and then held up against the under side of the false bottom by means of buttons a a, or by means of a clamp, b, or by any other suitable means that will allow of said plate bein g readily attached and detached. In the center of the plate D is -an upright tapering tube, E, upon the upper end of which is placed a short tube, E', having a conical cap, G, above it, and connected to it by arms c c. 0n each side of the tapering tube E in the plate D is a canvas valve, d, with a raised guard, f, above it, to prevent the clothes from pressing soldering of the false bottom C to the boiler, and by attaching the center plate D to it, in
the manner described, the' water is forced up through the center tube with great power.
The canvas valves are very simple and not liable to get out of order, and more effectual in that they close the orifices better than other valves, and thus make a more thorough circulation of the boiling suds through the clothes.V
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a wash-boiler, A, of the false bottom (l soldered to the boiler and provided with a central aperture, the detachable plate D, center'tube E with cap G, canvas valves d d, and guards ff, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
