Description
F. CO-URTINADEL CIGARETTE;
APPL |CATION FILED MAR. 8. 1911.
Patented Feh.26,1918.
FRANQOIS COURTINADE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CIGARETTE.
rea ers.
Application filed March 8, 1917. Serial No. 153,228.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANgois COURTINADE, a citizen of France, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarettes, of which ployed in the manufacture of such cigarette and which-is used or cigarettes.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which v Figure 1 is a side view of a cigarette, the wrapper of which is .made and applied according to my invention;
Fig. 2 a similar view showing a modification;
Fig. 3, a plan view of the wrapper employed in forming the cigarette shown in *ig. l;
Fig. 4 a similar view of the wrapper employed in making the cigarette shown in Fig. 2-; and,
Fig. 5 another view of the cigarette shown in Fig. 2 but showing an additional feature of my invention.
In the practice of my invention, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, ll provide a wrapper a, said wrapper being composed of the usual material, and oneside edge portion thereof is provided with projecting strips a three of which are shown, and any desired number of which are employed, and these strips are gummed on their inner sides as shown at a and in the use of this wrapper, in the o eration of making a cigarette 0 shown in rig. 1, the cigarette 1s rolled in the usual manner and the side edge a of the wrapper overlaps the side edge aas shown, and said stri s extend 'or are passed entirely around t e cigarette, and the free end portions thereof overlap and are sealed ,to the base end portions thereof as shown at a in saidfigure.
lln forming the wra per shown in Fig. i
e maln'ng or forma-p tion .of the cigarette 03 shown in Fig. 2, the
strips a are made V-shaped in form at the base thereof or where they connect with the side edge portion of the wrapper, or said strips are provided with V-shaped base portions in which are formed V-shaped openings a, and in the operation of forming the cigarette the free end portions of said strips extend or are passed entirely around the wrapper and are sealed to the edge portion a of the wrapper as shown at a in Fig. 2, or the end portions of the strips a may be carried over and sealed to the side edge portion a of the wrapper.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the only difference in the form of the wrapper, or in the appearance of the cigarette produced, is in the number and form of the strips a and my invention is not limited to the number of said strips em ployed, nor to the form thereof, and it will also be seen, or understood, that with my improvement 'the edge portion a of the Wrapper is not necessarily sealed to,the opposite side edge'portion a which it overlaps, and the wrapper may only be held in position and the cigarette retained in proper form by means of the strips a but my invention is not limited to this idea and the side edge portions a and a of the wrapper may be I overlapped and sealed together in the usual manner, if desired.
In Fig. 5 l[ have shown the cigarette d of Fig. 2 rovided with an additional element of rein orcement and decoration which consists of a thin narrow ribbon or a strip a which is passed around the mouth end portion of the cigarette, or that end portion which is intended to be placed in the mouth, in the operation of smoking, and formed into a bow a.
It will be observed that the strips a of the wrapper or wrappers employed extend at right angles to said wrapper or Wrappers, but this direction of said strips is not necessary and said strips may project or extend at any desired angle or angles from the side edge portions of the wrapper with which they are connected.
The method of making the cigarette herein described is also of my invention but is not claimed herein, said method being made the subject of a companion application for Letters Patent of the United States repared and filed by me of equal date herewith.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A wrapper for cigarettes one side edge portion of which is provided with reinforcing, strengthening and decorating strips which are passed around the cigarette in the operation of forming the same and are sealed thereto.
2. A wrapper for cigarettes one side edge portion of which is provided with reinforcing, strengthening and decorating strips my invention I have slgned my name in 15 presence of the subscribing witnesses this 7th day of March 1917.'
FRANQOIS COURTINADE.
