To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK VHARTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county. of New York and State of New York, ha Je invented new and useful Improvements in Sweatbands for Hats, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a sweat band especially-adapted to prevent vpressure over the temples of the wearer of the hat to which the band is applied, in oi der to avoid loss of hair when due to lack of blood circulation under the scalp. f

A further object is to provide a sweat band formed of a strip of material cut away in a particular and novel manner, so that the oppositely located notched portions will register with the edges of a somewhat wide strip when folded over an intermediate por-I tion thereof, this construction permitting the formation of a recess or the like at a point opposite each of the temples, so that pressure otherwise produced will be lessened, or eliminated. i

A further object is to provide a hat band with notches of different size on opposite edge portions, the hand being folded along longitudinal parallel lines in such manner that three thicknesses of material will Vbe provided in the finished product, and an additional strip forming a part of the main strip will be available for the purpose of attaching the band to the hat.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, described, illustrated and claimed, it being understood that modification may be made within the scope of claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Figure 1 is a plan view looking from the under side of the brim of a hat, and showing my improved hat band applied thereto.

Figure 2 is a view in vertical section.

Figure 3 is a plan view of the blank strip from which the hat band is formed.

Figure 4 shows the stripfolded to form a sweat band illustrated in section in Figure 2.

Figure 5 is a fragmentary view in vertical section showing a slightly modified form in which a filling or padding material is inserted into or between the layers of the sweat band. f

In Figure 1 thebrim of the hat is designated 10 and the crown `is shown 12, and within the crownis the sweat band constructed in accordance with the present invention. The completedl band comprises three thicknesses of material, as will be observed from an inspection of the cross section of Figure 2. The band as a whole is designated 14e, and is provided with recesses opposite each other and so positioned that they will be opposite .l

The blank strip from which the sweat band is formed is shown in detail in Figure 8 and this strip includes an intermediate or approximately central portion 16, a parallel portion 17, the parallelly extending portion 18 on the opposite side, and a narrow strip 19 serving to permit the proper attachment of the band within the crown, adjacent to the inner edge of the brim. Fold lines 21 divide the strip into the parallel portions indicated. Y

On one edge of the strip, deep notched portions 23 are provided, and these terminate along the line 21 between sections 1G and 17. Opposite notched portions 23 are notched portions 211, the latter being of the configuration shown, so that when the several portions of the strip are folded along the lines 21, to produce the complete device, the notched portions 23 and 211 will come into proper registration for forming recesses or depressions 25, illustrated in Figure Lt and further shown in Figures 1 and 2. ln order to secure this result the notched portions 23 may be formed of approximately true U shape, while the notched portions 24 have a broad inner portion 24, and `side edges 24 which entend toward each other at the outer edge of longitudinally extending portion 1S of the band or strip.

wWhen the band is to be formed from the blank illustrated in Figure 3, portion 18 is first turned over the intermediate portion 16, and portion 17 is then folded over, so as to lie substantially parallel with portions 16 and 18. The extreme edge portion 19 is folded over in the manner shown in Figure 2 and permits of securing the sweat band in position-within the hat. 1t will thus be observed that a sufficiently sti` band is provided, but provision is made for reducing or eliminating the pressure ot the hat over the temples ot the wearer.

l'n the forni illustrated in Figure 5 the sweet bend includes inner und outer thicknesses l() and 31 and :in intermediate layer ot telt or the like serving as n pudding, the lower edge portion 19 corresponding in function with the portion 19 ot the previous form.

Having thus described my invention, I claim :h

l. A sweat hand, comprising a strip oi materiel having` its edge portions notched, the notched edges ot' the strip being' folded over :in interniediete portion of the strip, with oppositeii7 located notched portions in regis tration, to provide recessed portions opposite the temples ot the wearer when `the hand is in position on e hat.

2. A sweet band, comprising e strip et material having i continuous surface extending` npproxin'mtely centrally thereof, the strip including edge portions, one ot which vlolds over the othe und hoth ot which fold over the central portion oit the strip, op )ositely located portions of the edges ot tie strip being notched, and the folded strip providingn recesses hy the registration et the notched portions.

3.
