through the perforations made by the thrleads which unite the sweat band to the ho y.
The essential objects of my invention are to preven t such discoloration, and to effect this end in a simple and inexpensive manner, and without the use 'of a multiplicity of auxiliary strips.
-To the above ends essentially my invention consists of such parts and such combinations of parts as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification Figure 1 is a vertical section of a hat embodying my invention,
Fig. 2, a similar enlarged section of a portion of the same, and
Fig. 3, an elevation of the face of the sweat band adjacent the hat body.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views.
In the embodiment of my invention here in illustrated 5 is a hat body or crown, 6 the brim, and 'Lthe usual ribbon. The usual sweat band 8 of leather, skin, or other usual similar material is provided. A'strip of oil silk, rubber tissue, or other suitable waterproof material is applied to the band as follows. The body 10 of the strip rests against the inner face of the sweat band with'its upper. and lower lateral margins 12 folded or wrapped over the lateral edges of the band 8 and resting against the outer face of.
the latter. The ad acent ortions ,of the flaps or folds 12 are united y stitching 14.
The described parts are engaged by stitch ing or stitches 16- which is engaged through the'bard 8, the lower fold 12, and the be y is performed prior to the application of the ribbon 7, and before the completion of the wrapping of the water-proof strip upon the sweat band. It will be observed that the stitches 16 are not accessible by perspiration because of the interposition of the waterproof portion 10. Also but one strip of material auxiliary to the sweat band is required to carry out my invention, and that the a plication of said strip is easily effected.
-5 only. It is obvious that the latter stitching y invention is adapted also to embodiment in any ordinary hat without any reconstruction or reorganization of the parts. The wrapping strip 10, it will be further noted, is smooth and unbroken throughout its area affording a smooth and agreeable contact with the wearers head.
, It will be understood that in the showing of the illustrations the thickness of all the parts is exaggerated.
I claim 1. In a hat,'a body, a sweat band, a strip of water-proof material embracing the inner face of the band comprising integral flaps overlapping the outer face of the band and in contact with said body, and stitches engaging the body solely through the sweat band and onefiapa 2. 'In a hat, a body, a sweat band, a strip of water-proof material embracing the face of the band provided with integral flaps overlapping the outer face of the band,
stitches engaging the body solely, through the sweat band and one flap, and stitches connecting the flaps.
3. In a hat, a body, a sweat-band, and a stri of water-proof material applied to sai band with the body ofthe strip resting against the inner face of the band withits upper and lower lateral margins folded over the lateral edges of the band and restlng against the outer face of the latter, and
means uniting the adjacent edges of the folds of said strip, leaving the inner face of the said strip entirely disconnected from the said uniting-means.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
NELSON W. COLGROVE.
