To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, AARON M. ADAMS and MAXWELL W. LANDAU, citizens of the United States, residing at 2102 N. 9th St, Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hatbands, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a combined head grip and ventilating hat band, and has particular application to a device of the class described which may be readily and quickly applied to, what is commonly termed, the

sweat band of any hat. In carrying out the present invention, it 1s our purpose to rovide a device 'of the type set forth WhlCh will be constructed in such manner-as to enable the hat to be ventilated, and which will cause the hat band to conform to the shape of the head of the wearer, thereby enabling the hat to be worn with comfort.

It is also our purpose to provide a combined head grip and ventilating hat band which will be so associated with the hat as to form a cushion between the hat and the head, thereby avoiding discomfort to the wearer.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a combined head grip and ventilating hat band which will be constructed in such manner as to absorb perspiration, thereby eliminating the discoloring of the 'hat band and preventing the perspiration from penetrating to the outer surface of the hat.

With the above cited objects and others of a similar nature, the invention consists in construction, combination and arrange: ment of parts set forth in the following description and falling within the scope of the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view of a hat equipped with a combined head grip and ventilating hat band constructed in accordance with our invention.

Referring now to the drawing in detail,

Arranged upon the surface of the hat band 2 next adjacent to the inner side of the hat 1 and disposed contiguous to the outer edge of the hat band, is a tape 4: composed of cloth or other fabric capable of absorbing persplration. This tape 4 overlies the annular row of perforations 3 and, in the present instance, is folded upon itself circumferentially to provide a pocket 5, and has one edge curled upon itself, in a direction opposite to the fold, to provide a loop 6. The loop 6 is arranged within the edge of the hat band and contiguous thereto, in order to receive the stitches that secure the hat band to the hat, as hereinafter described. The side edges of the tape 4 are disposed in the same relative positions at opposite sides of the pocket, and these edges are stitched to the corresponding edge of the hat band, as at'7. Extending through thepocket 5 is an elastic band or strip 8, while arranged within the loop 6 and extending entirely around such loop, is a reed 9. In the present instance the tape 4 is split or cut transversely at the back end of the hat and the ends of the elastic strip 8 project beyond the corresponding ends of the tape and overlap each other, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawing, these overlapping ends being secured together by a suitable fastening device, as the clasp 10. The looped portion 6 of the tape 4: is stitched to the inner surface of the hat at the juncture of the crown with the brim, the stitches encircling the reed 9, as clearly shown in Fig. 4:, so that head grip and hat' band will the strip 8 yields or gives and causes the band to conform to the shape of the head, and to snugly fit the same, while owing to the space between the hat band and the body of the hat, a cushion is formed which enables the hat to be Worn with comfort. The perspiration is absorbed by the tape 4 through the perforations 3 in the hat band.

Another very important feature of the invention resides in the fact that the elastic strip 8 tends to-prevent the lower edge of the hat band at the forward end of the hat, from creeping out of the hat, incident to the continued putting on and taking off of the hat.

While We have herein shown and described one preferred form of our invention byway of illustration, we Wish it to be un derstood that we do not limit .or confine ourselves to the precise details of construction herein shown and described, that modification and variation may be made Within the scope of the claims and without departing from the spirit of the invention.

We claim:

1. In a combined head grip and ventilatingihat band, a hatband having the outer edge perforated, a tape secured to the side of said band next adjacent to the hat and covering said perforations to absorb the perspiration, and formed to provide a circumferentially extending pocket, and an elastic strip Within the pocket acting to contract said tape and hat band to fit the latter to the head of the wearer.

2. In a combined head grip and ventilating hat band, a hat band having the outer edge perforated, a tape secured to the side of said band next adjacent to the hat and covering said perforations to absorb the perspiration, and formed to provide a circumferentially extending pocket, an elastic strip within the pocket acting to contract said tape and hat band to fit the latter to the head of the wearer, said tapebeing also formed to provide a loop arranged within the edge of said hat band, and a reed within said loop adapted to be encircled by the stitches that connect the hat band to the hat. I 3. In a combined head grip and ventilating hat band, a hat band having the outer edge perforated, a tape secured to the side of said band next adjacent to the hat and covering said perforations to absorb the perspiration, and an elastic band secured to said tape and acting to contract the tape and hat band to fit the latter to the head of the wearer.
