To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Joann-r K. BURGESS, a citizen oi the United States, residing at Bluefield, in the county of Mercer and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful'lmprovements in Garment-Re tainers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had'therein to the ac- This invention relates to garment retainers and is particularly designed tor mens use for retaining the outer shirt in proper position within the trousers.

The retaining device illustrated in these drawings as one form of the invention, coinprises two straps A, A", of elastic or other suitable material, arranged transversely each other and equipped at or near their ends with. clasps B adapted to engage the shirt or other garment to be retained in place. One of thestraps, .A. 1tor instance, may be provided with an auxiliary strap at matieally adjusting the device to the movements oi the body of the wearer.

Adjacent end portions of the straps may be connected together by side bands 0, U, Which with said straps form two loops D, D, Fig. 2, through which the legs of the wearer are inserted when the device is put on. The

'llhese swivel connections may he sep arable for convenience in putting on. the retainerand they are placed on the outside of pads c on the front ends of the hands so as to leave the inner surfaces of said hands smooth where they hear against thehody, thus insuring comfort to thewearer. The front ends of the straps may be adj ustahly attached to said swivel connections by n'leans or sliding buckles E, Fig. 1, so that the sia= of the device may be readily altered to tit the wearer. The front clasps B are pret en a ly fastened to the pads instead of directly to the straps.

The retainer may also be put on hy sen arating the swivel connections thus the taching the front ends of the straps from the pads c. lhe free ends of said straps may then he passed through the crotch and con nected again to the pads in proper position, thereby avoiding the necessity of inserting}; the legs through the loops l), D, if desired.

Each of the olasps may consist of a loop member 6 and a stud member 6' iiexihi connected to the device independently or each 1- other, whereby one member may he moved with respect to the other for interlocking them and clamping a portion of the garment between them. ltlti wire is severed at the end of said member, thus splitting the head or button in half and providing two resilient parts which are capable of springing laterally apart or giving inwardly toward each other as may be required for firmly gripping the garment without danger of tearing the same.

In order to employ the retainer for the purpose designed, it is put on over the underwear'by inserting the legs through the loops D, D and drawing the device up snugly under the crotch, the bands C, O being arranged about the hips. The clasps, are then engaged with folds of the shirt F, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The'crossed straps which pass under the crotch limit the upward movement of the device and thus prevent the shirt from riding up. When the trousers are put on over the device, they entirely cover and conceal the latter, so that the Wearers appearance is not marred at all but rather improved by reason of the fact that the shirt is always retained with just the proper fullness above the trousers.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:

1. A garment retainer having two straps crossed upon one another at their centers and adapted to be passed under the crotch,

' bands. connecting the adjacent front and rear portions of the respective straps and adapted to be'arranged about the hips, the connection betweenthe bands and the rear portion of the straps being intermediate the ends of said straps, pads on said bands at the front ends thereof, connections between the front end of said straps and the pads at av point below the position of attachment of the retainer to a garment, and means for attaching the retainer to a garment, certain of the attaching means being carried by the pads and others by the rear ends of the straps.

2. A garment retainer having two straps crossed upon one another at their centers and adapted to be passed under the crotch, bands connecting adjacent front and rear portions of the respective straps and adapted to be' arranged about the hips, the connection between thebands and the rear portions of the straps being a substantial distance from the rear ends of said straps, pads on said bands, detachable swivel connections between the straps and said pads, one part of said swivel connection being carried at the end of said straps and the other part upon the outer face of the pads, and means for attaching the retainer to a garment, certain of said attaching means being carried by said pads.

3. A garment retainer having two straps crossed upon one another at their centers and adapted to be passed under the crotch,

bands connecting adjacent front and rear portions of the respective straps and adapted to be arranged about the hips, said hands formed of a continuous piece extending from the rear portions of the straps at a point intermediate the ends of said straps and having at their front ends means for attaching said bands to a garment, means upon the rear ends of said straps for attaching the same to the garment, and means for detachably connecting the front "ends of the straps to the free ends of the bands at a point below the front garment attaching means.

4. A garment retainer having two straps crossed upon one another at their centers and adapted to be passed under the crotch,

bands connecting the adjacent front and rear pbrtions of the respective straps and adapted to be arranged about the hips, the connection between the bands and the rear portion of the straps being intermediate the ends of said straps, detachable connections between the front ends'of said st raps and the free ends of the bands at a point below the position of attachment of the retainer to a garment, and means for attaching the retainer to a garmnt.
