UNITED TATES CHARLES STREIT, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROCKING-CHAIRS.
I, CHARLES STREIT, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Rocking-0hairs, of which the following is a specification:
Nature and Objects of I nvention.
Description of the Accompanying Drawing.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a rocking and revolving chair embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section of the portion of the same in a vertical plane throughthe central swiveling-s crew.
General Description.
The chair A, which in the drawing is shown as a frame only, not upholstered, is provided with rockers a a of a width of tread about equal to the width of the platform B, on which the chair rests. The sides a of the chair may extend below the face of the platform B, acting as side flanges in the manner shown. To the platform B a strip, 0, is secured, to which the T-headed blocks D D are attached, the attachment being by screw, pin, or other device calculated to permit the blocks to swivel on the strip. The sides of the blocks fit loosely in notches cut in the center of the rockers, and
the heads of the blocks fit over the rockers in such a way as to permit the required play or rocking of the chair before they stop the motion by coming in contact. In this way the heads of the blocks serve to limit the play of the rockers. A screw, E, is firmly secured to the bottom of platform and rotates in a nut, F, the latter being firmly secured in the stationary base or stand G.
If preferred, the central pin E may simply rotate in the box F, and not screw out and in; but I prefer that a screw be used in order to serve a double function-that of permitting the revolution of the chair, and that of allowing the chair to be raised and lowered.
It will be seen that by reason of the combination of rocking-chair A, platform B, and
base G a double motion is given to the chairto wit, therocking motion upon the rockers, and a revolving motion in a horizontal plane upon the central pin E-which permits the occupant to swing to the right or left, or forward or backward; and thus an easy chair is afforded for office use, nursing-chair, &c.
Claim.
The combination of the T-shaped blocks D, bar 0 on the platform B, and rocking-chair A having recesses in the rockers a a, the parts being arranged to operate substantially as specified.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand. 7
