REVERSIBLE SEAT.

UNITED STATES PATENT. OFF CE.
JOSHUA R. RITCHIE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM ABBOTT, OF SAME PLACE.
REVERSIBLE SEAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,296, dated May 19, 1885.
Application filed February 20, 1885.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSHUA R. RIToHIE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reversible Seats, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a top or plan View of a chair embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section in line as a, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section in line 00 m, Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale, the back and arms of the chair being removed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a chair, stool, 800., having a reversible seat, the construction and operation thereof being hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the seat of a chair or stool, and B represents the support thereof. The seat has two faces, C C, one of which is upholstered and the other made of perforated wood, although any other suitable material may be used, and theseat is removable from the support, whereby, by reversing it, either of its faces may be placed above, and thus different kinds of seats may be presented; or if both faces are of the same material and one face is worn, the other face may be brought into service.
The side of the seat-frame D is doubly rabbeted, and the inner side of the seat-support has a shoulder, E, on which the central rim, F, formed by the rabbets, is sustained, said shoulder occupying the lower rabbet. In the upper rabbet is placed an annulus, G, which is flush with the seat-support and coincides with the shoulder E.
H represents bolts or screws which are employed for connecting the annulus and seat (No model.)
with the seat-support, said bolts passing through the annulus Grand the rim F and entirely through the shoulderE, so as to receive tightening-nuts on their lower ends, or may pass through the shoulder and rim into part of the annulus; or they may pass through the annulus and rim and screw into the shoulder. When the annulus is made of cast metal, screw pins or bolts may be formed therewith, the ends thereof having nuts which tighten against the under side of the shoulder.
It will be seen that when the bolts or screws are released the annulus may be withdrawn from the rabbet it occupies. The seat may then be removed, reversed, and reapplied. The annulus is reapplied, and the bolts and screws are tightened, whereby the seat is firmly connected in position, it being seen that the annulus provides a metal filling between theseat support and seat frame, and as it is clamped to said support and frame it serves as a re'enforce to said parts, so that a strong and durable seat is provided.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A support having a shoulder, and a reversible frame having a central rim formed by double rabbets, in combination with an annulus which is coincident with said shoulder, whereby the rabbets are occupied by said shoulder and annulus in either position of the frame, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The doubly-rabbeted frame having a central rim, the support with a shoulder, an annulus, and fastening bolts or screws connecting said annulus, frame, and support, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JOSHUA B. RITCHIE.
