Specification of Letters Patent.

Toall whom it may concern Be it known that we, Bnor. IvARvEDVAnD MAURITZ OHLsoN, a citizen of the Kingdom of Sweden, and residing at I'Ielsingborg,l Sweden, and Nits GUs'rAr OSCAR LUNDBERG, a citizen of the Kingdom of Sweden, and residing at Malmo, Sweden, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in leceipt-Drawers, of w iich the following is a specification.

vThis invention relates to apparatuses for distributing and receiving documents or papers comparatively large in size, for instance, bills of freight and notes at goods oii'ices, for the purpose of preventing the injurious draft arising by opening a usual pigeon-hole.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure l shows the apparatus in vertical section. Fig. 2 shows a plan view of the same.

The apparatus consists of a drawer 3 horizontally slidable on guides l and 2, this drawer being in its middle provided with an axle 4. The axle 4 is placed at right angles to the guides and carries two lids 5 and 6 hinged thereupon and from beneath infinenced by a spring 7 that always tends to turn the lids upward. This spring consists preferably of a spiral wound around the axle 4 and with each of its ends pressing against one of the lids. Of course the spring may be carried out in any other suitable way as to answer the same purpose.

Above the middle of the guides and parallel to the axle 4 a rib 8 is fixed, the lower corners of which are somewhat rounded. This rib, the under side of which faces the lids when these are covering the drawer, is preferably upon this under side covered with felt or the like so as to obtain a perfect fit. For the same purpose felted ribs 9 of a suitable width are provided on the under side of the drawer.

The apparatus is mounted in a wall between the despatch-otce and a locality accessible to the public and above the rib 8 a window and a speaking diaphragm may be placed in a known way.

A grip 10 for effectuating the sliding of the drawer is placed upon the lid 6 facing the despatch-office and the other lid 5 is provided with a shoulder 11. In the lid 6 a Patent-ea Feb. 12, isis;

hole 12 is bored so that the drawer infclosed position can be locked by a pin or the like put into the hole l2 through a corresponding hole 13 in the guide 2 thus preventing the drawer from being opened from the outside. At the end of the drawer 3 placed under the lid the end wall 14 is fixed to the drawer, but at the other end the corresponding wall l5 is fixed to the lid 6 so as to facilitate the removing of the papers from the drawer. Felt ribbons are applied to the end walls of the rib to make a close lit to prevent clatter when the lids are shut. These tightening and noise preventing ribbons may also be placed on the corresponding parts of the drawer and the lid. Felt or rubber buffers 1G are also provided at the ends of the guides.

Usually the drawer 3 is drawn into the despatch-office and kept in such a position that the lid G acted upon by the spring T is turned upward, as shown in Fig. l with dot and dash lines. If a document is to be handed in the clerk turns the lid 6 down and pushes the drawer outward so that the axle 4 passes to the opposite edge of the rib 8 and thereby the lid 5 is automatically turned up by the spring 7. After the document has been placed into the drawer the clerk pulls the drawer back again and the lid 5 is then automatically turned down by the pressure from the rib 8. After the drawer having been pulled in the lid 6 automatically is opened by the spring 7 and the document can be taken out. Of course, the function of the apparatus is the same if papers or the like are to be handed out.

Of course the form of the drawer and the size of it can be varied for different purposes and it is not necessary that the axle 4 be placed in the middle of the drawer so that the lids are of the same size, but it can also be placed nearer one end so that one lid is larger than the other one. The two lids can also be hinged on different axles. In any case the function of the apparatus will be the same and a draft is totally avoided.

Having now described our invention we declare that what we claim is l. An apparatus for distributing or receiving documents and the like consisting in a horizontally slidable drawer provided with two lids independent of each other and hinged on a common axle placed at right angles to the direction of movement of the drawer, a rib placed above the lids and a spring acting upon the lids and tending to turn them upward.
