UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTOPHER ANDERSON, OF MANITOWOC, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH TO THOMAS E. TORRISON, OF MANITOWOC, WISCONSIN.
HINGE To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER Axons- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manitowoc, in the county of h/lanitowoc and State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to hinges for doors and covers and has for its object to provide a device of this class which while acting in the capacity of a simple hinge also pro vides means for holding one hinged section in an open position or in any intermediate position.
Vith this object in view my invention consists in the novel construction of the hinge and in certain combinations of parts all of which will be first fully described and afterward specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hinge constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View through the same.
Like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the two figures in which:
1 indicates the hinge and 2 and 3 the hinged members. The hinge 1 may be applied to a box or any other capacity in which hinges are generally employed, and said hinge comprises the two leaves 4: and 5 which, as shown in F ig. 2, are secured together by means of a pintle 6 in the usual manner.
7 indicates an auxiliary leaf which as shown in Fig. 2 carries a pintle 8 which hingedly connects a springtongue 9 to the section 7.
As shown in the drawing I provide a guide 10 in the leaf at to receive the tonguet). As shown in Fig. 2 the leaf or section at is arranged on the outside of theihinged section 3 while the leaf 5 is arranged on the inside of the hinged section 2, while the auxiliary leaf 7 is arranged on the outside of the hinged section 2, and if found convenient the same fastenings 11 can be employed to Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 21, 1908.
Patented Aug. 3, 1909.
Serial No. 434,075.
secure the leaf F and the auxiliary leaf 7 on the hinged section 2.
Having thus described the several parts of my invention its operation is as follows: The tongue 9 entering the guide 10 in the leaf 1'- the hinged section 2 can be raised into position shown in full lines in Fig. 2 or carriedback into position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the leaves at and 5 supporting the hinged section 2. hen the device is in position shown in Fig. 1 the tongue 9 is substantially parallel with the hinged section 3, said tongue 9 being straight as shown. When the device is in position shown in Fig. 2 the pintle S carrying the tongue 9 is forced away from the pintle 6 thus carrying the tongue 9 into position shown. in Fig. 2 cansing the same to bind in the guide 10 to such an extent that the hinged section 2 will be held in position shown in Fig. 2 or in any intermediate position, as for instance that shown in dotted lines in F ig. 2.
' By this simple construction I am enabled to hold the cover or lid of a box or other device in any desired position without any external or additional holding or securing means.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is,
1. A hinge of the character described comprising two leaves, one member being constructed so as to be placed on the outside of a section to be hinged and the other leaf being constructed to be placed on the underside of a section to be hinged, an auxiliary leaf constructed to be arranged on the outside of the last mentioned section to be hinged, a tongue hingedly connected to said auxiliary leaf, and a guide associated with the first mentioned leaf to receive said tongue, substantially as described.
2. A device of the character described comprising a hinge for hingedly connect-ing together two parts or sections, an auxiliary leaf arranged on one of said hinged sections,
a tongue hingedly connected to said auxil= iary leaf, and a guide arranged on the otherof said hinged sections to receive said tongue.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
CHRISTOPHER ANDERSON. lVitnesses THOMAS E. TORRISON, JOSEPH IIEJDA.
