and ALwIN J. Sonnwn, citizens of the; United States, and residents of the cities of lVilmette and Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, respectively, have invented a certain new and useful Newspaper- Stand, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to a certain new and useful stand for newspapers and has for its object the provision of a stand of this character of simple construction which will retain newspapers thereon and permit their ready withdrawal. i
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which, i
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a news paper stand embodying our invention, Fig. 2, a front elevation of one end of said stand, and Fig. 3, a side elevation of a spring and a frame and guide cooperating therewith, employed in the device.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a newspaper stand 1 provided with the usual compartments 2 for the reception of papers. A substantially U-shaped wire spring frame member 3 is arranged at each end of stand 1 with its limbs or sides extending upwardly and secured to the top of said stand by means of screws 4 taking through suitable eyes provided in the ends of said limbs. Each limb of frame member 3 is provided with two guide loops 5 and said frame is provided with a loop 6 at its lower end to which the lower end of a spring 7 is attached. A retaining strip or bar 8 is arranged across the top of stand 1 with its ends projecting slightly over the ends of said stand and a substantially U-shaped wire guide member 9 is secured to each projecting end of strip 8 with its limbs extending downwardly and passing through guide loops 5 on frame member 3. At its upper end guide member 9 is provided with a loop 9 to which the upper end of spring 7 is secured, and the lower end of each of these limbs is turned outwardly as shown to form a stop 10 which will limit the upward movement of member 9 through loops Specification of Letters Patent;

5, Abracket 11 is secured to the under side of str p .Sat each end-thereof and a roller 12 is mounted in said bracket and arranged to contact with the tops of piles 13 and 14B of newspapers upon the top of stand 1. By this arrangement, it will be observed, that piles of newspapers will be securely retained upon the top of stand 1 against displacement by the wind, and that the uppermost of each of these piles may be readily withdrawn from under roller 12, the spring 7 serving to yieldingly hold the roller 12 to contact with the tops of the piles of papers, and at the same time serving to draw said roller downwardly to compensate for withdrawals of newspapers.
The construction will be found to be simple and readily understood and manipulated, and strong and durable of use.
While we have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying our invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. We, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail ourselves of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination of a stand; a retainer arranged across the top of said stand; a substantially U-shaped wire guide member secured to each end of said retainer with its limbs extending downwardly adjacent the corresponding end of said stand; stops on the ends of said limbs; a substantially U- shaped wire spring frame having its limbs extending upwardly and secured to each end of said stand adjacent the top thereof, there being guide loop connections between each limb of said frame and the limbs of said guide member; and a spring secured at its lower end to each of said spring frames and at its upper end to the corresponding end of said retainer, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a stand; a flat strip arranged across the top of said stand; a substantially U-shaped wire guide member secured to each end of said strip with its limbs extending downwardly adjacent the corresponding end of said stand; stops on the ends of said limbs; a substantially U-sha-ped wire spring frame having its limbs extending upwardly and secured to Intestimony whereof We have signed our o each end of said stand adjacent the tops names to this specification in the presence thereof, there being tfwo guide loops formed of tWo subscribing witnesses.
in each limb of said rame and the limbs of said guide member being passed through V p 7 said loops; anda spring secured at its lower a I e end to each of said spring frames and its lVitnesses: upper end to the corresponding end of said J osHUA R. H. PorTs, strip, substantially as described. BRAYTON G. RICHARDS;
