ABRASIVE-MATERIAL HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented net. 12,191@.
Application filed May 24, 1917. Serial No. 171,031.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, SAMUEL KLEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in AbrasiVe-Material Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This device is intended to furnish a firm support for a piece of emery cloth or other abrasive materal and to make it convenient to hold this material so supported, by the hand. It can be used for many purposes, especially it is convenient for use in polishing articles upon a lathe, for smoothing down the edges of articles held in a vise and for many other purposes that will appear to a person accustomed to work with emery cloth or other abrasive material.
Figure 1 is an elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is another elevation of the device at right angles to the elevation shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged "low of the spring clamp used to hold the abrasive material.
A blade 2 is attached, preferably rigidly, to a handle 7. In practice, the tongue 6 fits into the handle 7 as similar parts of chisels, files or other tools fit into their handles. The blade 2 is of a width and shape in accordance to the use to which the tool is to be put. In the tool illustrated it has a flat Over this blade 2 is drawn the strip 1 of abrasive material. The blade 2 supports this strip of abrasive material 1. This strip of abrasive material 1 is held upon the blade by spring clamps. These clamps are provided with jaws 5, 5. In practice, I construct these clamps in the following manner: I provide a springing coil 9 and the arms formed of two portions 4 and 8 not lying in the same straight line but forming a bend at the point 15. These arms extend from the coil to the jaws 5, 5. At the handle end of the blade is a shoulder and at the sides of the blade I place the studs 3, 3, over which are placed the coils 9. The length of the arms of this spring clamp is so regulated that the jaws 5, 5 will lie close up against the shoulders upon the blade 2. The strip of abrasive material 1, is held very firmly by the jaw 5 against this shoulder. The arms of the spring clamps being bent at 15, 15, will give a very strong upward pull to the jaws 5, 5, thus holding the strip 1 Very firmly between them and the shoulders on the blade. The portion 12 of the strip 1 upon which these jaws grip is bent over the edge of the shoulders by which means additional firmness is given. The shoulders in practice may be formed by cutting a notch 14, at the portion of the tongue 6 adjacent to blade 2. The strip of abrasive material 1 may be put in position by slipping one of its ends under a jaw 5 of the spring clamp which has been lifted to permit its insertion. This jaw springs against the strip and may, if necessary, be pushed beneath the shoulder on the blade, in which position it will hold the strip very firmly against the. bottom of the shoulder. The strip is then drawn over the blade, passed over its end and down the other side of the blade and slipped under the other jaw 5 of the spring clamp, which is put back in its position beneath the shoulder on the blade 2, the strip having been drawn taut before the second jaw 5 is put in its position beneath the shoulder of the blade. The strip can then be torn ofi below the jaw 5.
I claim:
1. In a holder for abrasive fabrics, the combination of a long blade, having wide faces and narrow sides, the handle a tongue forming part of it of lesser width and thickness than the blade and extending downward into the handle, shoulders being formed where the blade and tongue join, trunnions at the narrow sides of the blade, spring clamp having hearings on said trunnions and springing against the tongue adjacent to the said shoulders and a strip of abrasive fabric passed over bothwide faces of the blade and under the said springs where they spring clamp against the tongue.
2. In an abrasive material holder, the combination with a handle, of a blade having the tongue connecting it to the handle and a pair of shoulders at the handle end of the blade and studs, a spring clamp having coils held by the said studs, jaws lying close against said shoulders and. arms extending between the coils and the jaws, said arms being composed of two portions not in alinement with each other and a strip of abrasive material having its end inserted beneath the jaws of said clamp and its intermediate portion supported by said blade.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
SALIU EL KLEIN.
