The basemember I0 has a yflat bottom I9 with extensions 29 and -2I along the sides of the'base member t0, with similar portions `22 yand-23 extending along the ends of the member -I whereby theface I9 ci the plate Il'l isslightly larger in area than `is the top of the Abase membei` I0.
A `pair of `recesses 24 and 25 are formed in the bottom face I9 of the member I0 and extend longitudinally vof `the base member I9, partially of its length. VThe recesses 24 and`25 are open lat the bottom I9 of the base member I0 and have magnets 26, 26,mounted thereinand lirmly xed into the base member I9 by being cemented therein or secured thereto in any-other approved manner. A pair of bores A2'! and-2`8 extend from the face of the plate I9 inwardly therefrom-these bores being spaced between the `recesses 2li and 25 for purposes'hereinafter described. A metallic plate 29 is provided of substantially the same area as the bottomiaoe I9 of the basemember I9, with dowel pins 39 and 3 I being mounted in thesaid plate 29 and-swedged intofixed relation `with the plate 29 so that they are not easily removed from this plate :29, and which when theplate 29 is in position on the face I9 of the'basevmember I0 the dowel pins 3D and V3I extend into the bores 2l and 28 so as to hold the plate 29 against a torsional or twisting displacement of the plate 29 upon the face I9 of the base member I0. A strip of cushioning material 32, such as felt, rubber, or the like, is cemented to the `face of the-'Inetal-plate 29 opposite to the one-from which the dowcl pins @tand-3| extend to-provide-a cushion for a strip `.of abrasive material 33 which, when the device isin use, lis folded around the cushioning material-732, the plate 29 with vthe- side edges 34, 34 of the material 33 being interposed between the the tool and cannot easilyT be displaced therefrom, particularly during the normal use of the device. A
The ends and sides of the base plate 29 are in register vwith the ends and sides oi the cushioningmaterialv32- so that the abrasivematerial 33 extends at right angles-.to the bottom portion 4thereof and is supported bythe edges of the plate 29 and the edges of the cushioning material for use particularly in right-angled corner positions in order that both the bottom of the abrasive material and the side or end portions can be used for sanding purposes, polishing, or the like, if desired. Likewise the face I9 of the base member I0 is slightly larger and extends beyond the sides and ends of the top portions I5, I6, I1 and I8 of the base member I0, so that the tool can be placed in abrading position without being close enough to the Work-piece to injure the hands of the operator while the device is in use.
In operation the device will be easily understood in that when it is desired to set the tool up for work the plate 2li and cushioning member can be removed without the use of tools by being pulled away from the magnets 26, 2Q a sufcient distance so the plate is outside of the magnetic eld of the magnets 26, 2&5 and a strip of abrasive placed around the cushion 32 and the plate 29, with the ends folded inwardly over the top of the plate 29 and the plate 29 put into position adjacent the face E9 of the holding block lll while this material is being held in the fingers of the operator, with the dowel pins 30 and 3| being in register with the bores 21 and Z8, and
as the plate 29 thus held is brought into position so that the dowel pins are about to enter the openings, the metal plate is within the magnetic eld of the magnets 26, 2B so that the plate with the abrasive therearound is drawn against the face IS of the base member lll and held in position with suicient strength so as not to be easily removed therefrom, and sufficient to hold the abrasive material in tight position around the cushion member 33 when the device is ready for use. material is accomplished by the reverse operation by the workman grasping the top of the base member firmly in his hands and exerting an outward pull on the metallic member separating the metallic member from the magnets when the abrasive material 29 can be removed or replaced with another piece of abrasive material and different laind of material or a piece of polishing material as may be desired and thereupon replaced so that the edges are gripped between the base of the member Z4 around its marginal edges and the face I9 of the base plate lll.
While I have described more or less precisely the details of construction, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I contemplate changes in form and the proportion of parts and the substitution of equivalents as circumstances may suggest or render expedient without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention.
What is claimed is:
l. An abrasive holder comprising in combination a non-magnetic base member, a magnet mounted thereon on one face thereof and a metallic abrasive holder of substantially the same dimensional area as the face of the base member tted against the said magnet.
2. An abrasive holder comprising in combination a non-magnetic base member having a magnet receiving recess in one face thereof, a magnet mounted therein and a metallic abrasive holder of substantially the same dimensional area as the face of the base member fitted against the said magnet.
3. An abrasive holder comprising in combination a non-magnetic base member, a pair of magnets mounted thereon in spaced relation with each other and a thin metallic abrasive holder The removal or replacement of the abrasive r adjacent the said magnets and within their magnetic field.
4. An abrasive tool comprising in combination a non-metallic base member having a plurality of spaced recesses therein, magnets mounted in each of said recesses, a metallic plate tted to one face of the base member in which the said magnets are mounted and abrasive material in sheet form folded around the said metallic plate with the edges of the abrasive material being held between the said plate and the said base member.
5. An abrasive tool comprising in combination a non-metallic base member having a plurality of spaced recesses in one face thereof, the said recesses being spaced from each other and from the side edges and ends of the holder, magnets mounted in the said recesses, a metal plate adapted to engage the face of the base member having the magnets mounted therein and a flexible abrasive member Afolded around the metal plate and having its edges clamped between the metal plate and the face of the base member.

An abrasive tool comprising in combination a non-metallic base member having a plurality of spaced recesses in one face thereof, the said recesses being spaced from each other and from the side edges and ends of the holder, magnets mounted in the said recesses, a metal plate adapted to engage the face of the base member having the magnets mounted therein, a flexible abrasive member folded around the metal plate and having its edges clamped between the metal plate and the face of the base member and means on said metal plate in engagement with the base member whereby the said metal plate is held against torsional movement with respect to the said base member.

An abrasive tool comprising in combination a non-metallic base member having a plurality of spaced recesses in one face thereof, the said recesses being spaced from each other and from the side edges and ends of the holder and having a plurality of spaced bores therein, magnets mounted in the said recesses, a metal plate adapted to engage the face of the base member having the magnets mounted therein and a plurality of pins carried by the said plate extending into the bores in the base member, a iiexible abrasive member folded around the metal plate and having its edges clamped between the metal plate and the face of the base member.
8. An abrasive tool comprising in combination a non-metallic base member having a plurality of spaced recesses in one face thereof, the said recesses being spaced from each other and from the side edges and ends of the holder and having a plurality of spaced bores therein, magnets mounted in the said recesses, a metal plate adapted to engage the face of the base member having the magnets mounted therein and a plurality of pins fixedly mounted in the said plate extending into the bores in the base member, a flexible abrasive member folded around the metal plate and having its edges clamped between the metal plate and the face of the base member.
