Specification of Letters Patent.
lPatented Feb. a, rat.
Application filed July 24, 1917. Serial No. 182,546.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. Ln Coon, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Winthrop, in the county of Middlesex, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Pool Rails and Pockets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of this invention is to provide simple and adequate means whereby ordinary plain or round tables may be converted into pool tables without altering or changing the construction of the said tables.
This device is designed to produce a substantial playing table which will be as effective as those now used for billiard and pool playing and at the same time it can be produced at a very low cost.
For the purpose of clearly explaining my improvement I have provided the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a rectangular shaped table having my described device embodied thereon, and Fig. 3 is a similar View of the said improvement adapted to an oval table. Fig. 2 is an elevation of one of the corner pockets and a section of the rail, the said pocket having the customary netting omitted. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the rails, taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2. Figs. 5 and 6 are, respectively, plan and end views of one of the detached pockets and Fig. 7 shows the means whereby the several rails are locked or fastened to the pockets. Fig. 8 is an elevation of a preferred style of clamp by means of which the device is held in its operative position, with respect to the table.
Referring now to the drawings, the numeral 10 denotes a plain table and 11 a round table having secured thereto, by means of clamps 12, my herein described attachment.
This said attachment consists of suitably constructed corner pockets 13 and center pockets 14 which are removably secured to extension rails 15. For the purpose of allowing adjustment I have constructed the rails so as to allow one portion to slide with in the other, as at 16. The several pockets are held in their respective positions, with respect to the rails, by means preferably, as disclosed at 17.
In Figs. 5 and 6 I have shown a preferred form of pocket having the usual net 18 secured thereto by any suitable means and, in order to overcome the possibility of the proecting ends of the table interfering with the passage of the balls into the said pockets, I have lengthened the arm portions of said pocket as will be seen by reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The rails 15 are constructed in telescoping parts 15 and 15 and can thereby be adjusted to fit any size or shape of table as heretofore mentioned. Therefore it will be readily seen that my described device can convert any ordinary table into a pool or billiard table by merely stretching a cloth upon the surface of said table and mounting my said device thereon.
Inasmuch as the rails are not faced with rubber, and in order to obtain the requisite rebound of the balls, I have found it desirable to substitute rubber balls in place of the ivory ones now, in common. use, and for the purpose of restraining the rubber balls from jumping off the table I have shaped the rails 15 in a concave manner, as at 15.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patent 1. In combination with a table, a plurality of side pockets, a plurality of cor ner pockets, means for connecting said pockets, consisting of rails constructed to be telescoped within each other, and means for clzgmping the rails and pockets to the said ta le.
2. In combination, with a cloth-covered table, a plurality of independently constructed pockets, a plurality of rails comprising a plurality of sections designed to telescope within each other, means for fastening the pockets to said rails and means for clamping the said rails and pockets in their operative positions with respect to the said cloth covered table.
3. In combination with a table, a raised border consisting of a plurality of extensible sections, and pockets located at predetermined positions in said border, and means for clamping said border to the table.
Worden or this patent man be obtained for ave cents each, by addressing the Commissioner er Patents, Washington, In. G.
