Description
H'ENRYjM. BEID LER;
.Improvement in Attachments for the Backs of Ss-atv No. 125,521, Patented AprviI9,1872
WITNESSES v INVENTDH a I I PATENT QFFIGE.
HENRY M. BEIDLER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN ATTACHMENTS FOR THE. BACKS OF SEATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,521, dated April 9, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. BEIDLER, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachment for the Back of Chair-Seats; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The object of my present invention is to provide a means for holding a hat, opera-glasses, handkerchief, book, or other article on theback of a seat in theaters, churches, and other like places, and at the same time so attach the device to the seat-back that it will not interfere with the passage-way between the rows of Figure 1 represents my invention secured to a hinged leaf on the back of the chair or other seat. Fig. 2 represents a plan View (looking from above) of the album opened, and with a pair of opera-glasses in one of the pockets. Fig. 3 represents a sliding hat-support used on a hinged leaf which carries my invention. Fig.
4 represents a perspective of the album with one of its pockets open.
In the accompanying drawing, A. represents any ordinary chair or seat. 0 represents the album, which is permanently secured to the back B of the seat A, or leaf B, as preferred. This album is provided with a pocket nearest the seat-back for the opera-glass, libretto, programme, or other article. From the seat-back, around the outside of this pocket, is passed an elastic spring, a, so that when not in use this pocketwill closelyhugthe seat-back, and when any article is placed in the pocket the spring will clasp it tightly. Between the outside of this pocket and the back of the album I( which is hinged at its bottom, as shown) are a series of leaves, at d d, which may contain the coming theatrical plays, neat pictures, programmes, or advertisements of any description. Around the back of the album is an elastic band or spring, b, which is connected to the chair-back, (or leaf,) and keeps the album closed and out of the passage-way. This latter band may be also used to retain the hat. of a person. It is only necessary to pass the hat under the band, and it will be clasped to the seat-back and out of the w. y. When the hinged leaf B is used, I attach a sliding bolt, D, to one edge, so that a hat may be hung thereon, as shown in Fig. 1. I may also attaoh a spring-catch, f, to the chair to hold the leaf close to the back thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention,
Witnesses:
O. M. ALEXANDER, J. M. MASON.
