STEPHEN H. GALLAGHER, OF UTICA, NEW YORK.
SHARPENER FOR KNIVES, SCISSORS, AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 29, 11918.,
Application filed May 18, 1917. Serial No. 169,515.
1 '0 it whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN H. GAL- LAGHER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Utica, in the county of Oneida, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sharpeners for Knives, Scissors, and the like, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements in sharpeners for scissors, knives, and
the like.
Tl primary object of the invention is to produce a simple, eflicient, and relatively inexpensive device of the character described which will eliminate the necessity of the use of any particular skill or the exercise of any special care in order to assure that the blade is held at the proper angle to the abrading surface and yet permit substantially uniform use of the entire surface of the abrading element.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device illustrating its use in the sharpening of scissors.
Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal cross section of the same.
The device as shown comprises a base 1 formed with a laterally extending channel preferably having opposite edges 2- and 3 overhanging the base, in which channel the abrasive element 13 is positioned, and preferably a suitable granular abrading material, such as carborundum, emery, alundum, or corundum, suitably agglutinized, is molded or otherwise shaped in said channel with portions confined beneath the overhanging edges -2- and 3-.
The base is provided with a central longitudinal slot l, and the abrading element is provided with a similar alined slot -5 for a purpose hereinafter described.
The base 1- is preferably provided with a rearwa-rdly extending handle -6- ofiset from the plane of the base and preferably lying in a plane beneath the base, and may, as shown, be of oval annular formation having an annular cross bar -7. provided with a longitudinally extending boss 8 adapted to receive and retain the end of a rod or shaft 9- upon which rod or shaft a blade-guide l0 is mounted. Preferably the uide is formed with a bearing -l1 slidably mounted upon the rod and'with a radially extending finger 12 extending through the alined slots -4L- and 5 and having a portion extending above the abrading element 13-.
At least one face of the finger 12, as the face 1l, is formed to guide a blade along and across the abrading element 13 and may be of any desired form and extend at any desired angle relatively to the plane of the upper surface of the abrading element.
The guide 10-- is held at its limit of v movement in slots 4 and -5 so as to form an abutment at all times for a blade to be sharpened by a suitable sprin l5- mounted upon rod -9- and con ned between the boss -8 and the guide 10-. The tension of the spring is suflicient to hold the blade to be sharpened at the proper J angle relatively to the abrading surface and avoids the necessity of the exercise of any special care in properly sharpening the blade.
The rod 9- may be secured to the boss -8- in any suitable manner, either removably or permanently, as desired. The handle -6 is preferably offset from the base -1- just sufficient to permit the extension of rod 9- beneath the base.
It will be apparent that both edges of the finger 10- may be formed with guide surfaces if desired, and that the abrading element may be molded in place or may be a suitable stone or other unitary element secured in position in any suitable and desired manner, that illustrated being preferable, and although I have shown and described one specific construction as illustrative of my invention I do not desire to limit myself to any specific form, construction or arrangement of the parts of the device, as many changes may be made in the details of each without departing from the spirit of this invention as set forth in the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. In a device of the class described, a base, an abrasive element mounted on the base, said base and abrasive element having alined slots, and a guide projecting through said slots and movable therein.
2. In a device of the class described, a base, an abrasive element mounted on the base, said base and abrasive element having alined slots, a guide projecting through said slots and movable therein, and spring means for tensioning the guide.
3. In a device of'the class described, a base, an abrasive element mounted on the base, a rod connected to the base, a guide having a bearing journaled on the rod, and a finger projecting above the abrasive element.
4. In a device of the class described, a base, an abrasive element mounted on the base, said base and abrasive element having 15 alined slots, a rod connected to the base and extending in substantial parallelism with the slot, a guide having a bearing journaled 0n the rod, a finger projecting through said alined slots, and a spring on the rod for 20 tensioning the guide.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of May, 1917.
STEPHEN I-I. GALLAGHER.
