To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EvER'r E. STOKES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Detachable Broom-Handle, of which the following is a specification.

By way of explanation it may be stated that, as is commonly known, the handle of a broom is thrown away, along with the head of a broom, when the head becomes worn out or unfit for use.

This invention aims to provide a detachable handle for a broom, to the end that the handle may be used repeatedly, novel means being provided for holding the handle in the head of the broom, and a portion of this holding means being the cross pin or nail whereunto is attached one end of the wire which holds the strands of the head of the broom in place.

It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.

With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the in vention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings, the invention is shown in a single sectional figure.

The numeral 1 denotes a tapered socket. Through the lower end of the socket 1 is passed a securing device which may be a nail 2. Certain of the strands 3 of the broom head are placed around the socket 1. One end 4; of a wire binder is secured to one end of the nail 2. The wire is passed outwardly through the strands 3 and surrounds the strands 3 as shown at 5, to hold the strands on the socket 1. The wire thence is extended as shown at 6 around the depending ends 7 of strands 8. Strands 9 are placed on the outside of the strands 8 and the upper ends 10 of the strands 9 are disposed around the socket 1. The wire binder is wrapped as shown at 11 around the ends 10 of the strands 9 and may engage the lower edge of a finishing strip 12 which generally is made of velvet or of some similar material. Over the upper edge of the finishing strip 12 is placed a thimble 14, the overlapped ends of which appear at 15. The upper end of the binding wire passes between the ends 15 of the thimble 14. A securing element 16 passes through the overlapped ends 15 of the thimble and engages the upper ends 10 of the strands 9. The upper end of the binding wire is attached as shown at 17 to the securin element 16.

The %room head may be built up in various ways, without jeopardizing the utility of the invention, and the general method of securing the strands of the broom head in place by means of the wire is known. The important point, entering into the combination to be claimed hereinafter, is merely that the nail 2 constitutes a place of attachment for the lower end of the binding wire, no matter how the binding wire may be applied to the strands to hold the same in place.

The numeral 18 marks a handle which is tapered at 19 to fit removably in the socket 1. A cap 20, which preferably is fashioned from metal, is attached by a securing device 21 at the lower end of the handle 18. The cap 20 carries a screw 22, resembling a cork screw.

In practical operation, the tapered end 19 of the handle 18 is inserted into the tapered socket- 1, and the handle is rotated, whereby the screw 22 will engage with the nail or securing device 2, thereby holding the end 19 of the handle 18 firmly in the socket 1 and wedging the end 19 of the handle in the socket.

The construction above described includes a simple but eilicient means whereby the handle 18 may be detachably engaged with the socket 1, it being possible to use the handle repeatedly.
