Specification of Letters Patent. Patented diam. 15, 191%.
Application fi1ed Jannar y15, 1917. Serial No. 142,455.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST Gr. THEROUX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Emmitsburg. in the county of Frederick, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in TableAttachments for Invalid-Beds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the'art to which it appertains to make and use the same. A
This invention is an improvement in beds and has particular reference to a table attachment therefor.
An object of the invention is the provision of a table which may be supported above a bed, and when not in use, folded and adjusted to a position beneath the bed and, to this end, guide members are mounted beneath the bed and have connected thereto a table supporting element to which is pivoted the table, said supporting element being in a vertical position at the side of the bed when in supporting position and being adapted to be slid, together with the table, into the guide members when it is not desired to use said table.
Another object is to provide an attachment of this character which is simple in construction, easy to manufacture and effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions. one of which for the purpose of illustrating the invention. is shown in the accompanving drawing. wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device in operative position and showing the same secured to a bed, the latter being in cross section.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device in folded or inoperative position.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. & is a section on the line M of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5--5 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters indicate similar parts, the numeral 10 indicates generally a bed having the usual side rails 11 to which is secured,- by means of clamps 12a frame including oppositely disposed parallel guide members 18 which are preferably in the form of substantially U-shaped channel irons having inturned flanges 1% and 15 at their longitudinal edges. The forward ends of the guide members 13 are connected by an arched cross piece 16. These guide members are arranged beneath the mattress of the bed and extend transversely thereof and have their forward ends projecting slightly beyond one side rail of the bed. The. frame including the guide members 13 may be provided with a bottom consisting of a plurality of slats or boards 16.
A table supporting member 17 formed of open work angle irons is associated with the guide members 13 and is provided at the adjacent corners thereof with the bearings 18 which are adapted to engage between the flanges 1 1 and 15 of the guide members 13 whereby said supporting member 17 may be supported in position and also adjusted longitudinally of said guide members when it is desired to adjust the table and supporting member to inoperative position beneath the bed. In order to support the member 17 in an operative position a suitable clip or latch 19 is pivoted to the said member and adapted to engage a keeper 19' mounted on the cross piece 16 whereby pivotal movement of said member is prevented.
The side of the member 17 opposite that having the bearings 18 is notched adjacent each end as indicated at 20 and provided with a shoulder or ledge 21. The notches are adapted to receive therebetween the lugs 22 of the table 23, said lugs being pivoted in the notches as indicated at 2d. The table 23 is preferably of rectangular formation and when in operative position the edge thereof adjacent its pivot 24 rests upon the shoul ders 21 of the supporting members 17 so that said table will be positioned in a hori zontal plane above the bed, as shown in Fig. 1. "When it is desired to adjust the mem bers to inoperative position, the latches 19 are first disconnected from the member 16, after which the member 17 may be swung downwardly to a horizontal position. The
table 23 is then swung to a similar position in alinement with the member 17 after which both of said parts may be slid inwardly in the guides 13 whereupon the supporting member and table will be located entirely beneath the bed.
\Vhat I claim is:
1. In combination with a bed having side rails, an attachment therefor including a frame supported by said side rails and consisting of guide members extending transversely of the bed, a supporting member having bearings adapted for pivotal engagement with said guide members and adjustable longitudinally thereof, means associated with said supporting member for retaining the same in a vertical position at one end of said guide members, and a table pivoted to said supporting member and adapted to be adjusted into a position between and longitudinally of said guide members.
2. In combination with a bed having side rails, an attachment therefor including a frame supported by said side rails and consisting of guide members extending transversely of the bed, a supporting member having bearings adapted for pivotalcngagement with said guide members and adjustable longitudinally thereof, means associated with said supporting member for retaining the same in a vertical position at one end of said guide members, said supporting member being also provided'with shoulders and notches contiguous to said shoulders, and a table having lugs pivoted in said notches and adapted to engage said shoulders when the same is in operative position, said table being adapted to be adjusted between and longitudinally of said guide members to an inoperative position,
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
