JOHN WESLEY NEFF, OF BUOKHANN ON, WEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JACOB G. HALL, OF SAME PLACE.
DESK ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,142, dated June 6, 1893.
Application filed February 13, 1893. Serial No. 462,143. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN WESLEY NEFF,
residing at Buckhannon, Upshur county, in the State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Desk Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in desks or desk attachments and consists in the special construction and arrangement of parts whereby to conveniently file away and provide for access to any portion of the filed'away papers.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a plan view, the top being removed, and Fig. 3 is a detail view.
The desk or frame A may in general respects be of ordinary construction except in the particulars hereinafter described. Its top B is hinged at its front end at b and has at its rear edge the hinged supports C which may be folded in the desk when the top is lowered or be adjusted to hold said top at an incline as indicated in dotted lines. Near its rear the desk has a depending case D at the bottom of which I provide a drawer E to receive any papers that may accidentally drop out of the file belt or apron. r,
The paper holder comprises a belt or apron F having pockets G to receive the papers and this belt or apron is suitably supported soit may be vmoved to bring its pockets successively into is shown as formed of suitable fabric united at its ends to produce an endless belt or apron. This apron hasits pockets G arranged in rows or series along its opposite sides, and lying in a line slightly to one side of the central line of the belt. This belt extends down in the case D and under a roller H just above the drawer E said roller I-I being movably supported so it may act as a tension roller to take up slack and is suitably actuated by springs h as shown or by weights arranged to operate equivalently to springs h to depress the roller. Between its ends the apron is suitably guided and at its front end it is guided by the roller I, mounted in a movable frame I so it can be moved into and out of the desk to cover or expose the front of the apron and the roller I can then be turned by means of handle pins 1" or otherwise to bring any desired one of the pockets to the front. The movable frame I is preferably in the form of a drawer fitted to the desk case as shown. It may be preferred to form the rollers H and I polygonal with their sides the same width as the pockets of the belt and it is also preferred to corrugate the roller I to enable it to better operate the belt.
The operation and advantages of the im-- provement will be readily understood. It is apparent that any desired ones of the pockets may be readily brought to the front by first opening the drawer and thenturning the roller I until the desired pocket is adjusted to the front.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat 1. In an apparatus substantially as described a belt or apron provided with pockets opening laterally for the insertion and removal of the papers &c. and closed at its upper and lower sides whereby the papers will not fall out in'any of the positions of the belt substantially as set forth.
2. In an apparatus, substantially as described, the combination with the belt or apron adapted to receive the papers of guide rollers therefor, one of said rollers being mounted in a movable support whereby it may be adj usted, substantially as set'forth.
3. In an apparatus substantially as described, the desk frame combined with the drawer fitted thereto, and provided with a roller and the belt or apron adapted to support the filed papers and passed at one end around said roller, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination ofthe desk having the case D, and the drawer E and the belt or apron adapted to receive the paper to be filed, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination of the desk frame, the belt or apron having pockets the rollers supporting and guiding said apron and the drawer like frame supporting one of said rollers and movable, substantially as described.
6. The combination with the desk or frame having the case D, and the drawer E at the bottom thereof of the belt having its lower 8. Theiinproved apparatus herein described rear end guided within said ease, substan-i consisting of the desk or frame having a case tially as set forth. D and a drawer E, the roller H and its aotul5 7. In an apparatus substantially as deating devices, the roller 1, and the drawer like 5 scribed a belt or apron provided with a pluframe supporting said roller I and the endrality of rows of pockets arranged side by less apron or belt passed around rollers 11 and side, suchpockets being arranged to open lat-' I and adapted to support the papers to be erally for the insertion and removal of the filed, substantially as set forth.
papers 850. and being closed at their upper JOHN WESLEY NEFF. 10 and lower sides against the removal of the Witnesses:
papers at such points substantially as set C. A. WEST,
forth. WM. S. OBRIEN.
