UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY IV. ROUNTREE, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA;
- TRUNK.
S PECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,899, dated March 29, 1892.-
Application filed September 13, 1890. Serial No. 364,919. (No model.) I I To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY W. ROUNTREE, of Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trunks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in trunks, and particularly in such trunks as that shown in my former patent, No. 399,439; and it consists in certain features of construction and novel combinations of parts, as will be here inafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 isavertical transverse section of the trunk with cover raised or open and the tray slid back, and Fig. 2 is a detail view of the tray.
The trunk may have its bodyA and hinged cover or top B made in any suitable style, shape, or material, the back of the body or trunk A being cut down at its top at a to permit the movement of the tray. At each end of the trunk and near the top thereof are secured the strips 0, 011 which the tray is movably supported. These strips C are slightly inclined upward from front to rear, so that the tray when slid back into the open cover will not strike at its rear corner upon the back I) of the cover,but will ride up over such back, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. This inclination of the strips avoids the cutting down of the trunk-back at a to such extent as is necessary in the construction shown in my former patent before described. These strips 0 are reinforced by metal plates or rails D and are provided near their rear ends with rollers E, on which the tray rests and rolls.
The tray is provided on its under side, at or near its front end, with rollers F, which bear upon the strips 0, and support the front end of the tray at its opposite sides. By preference the said rollers F are arranged at the front corners of the tray, so that in the uptilting of the rear end of the tray in the closing movement of the cover B the front corner of the tray will notbind upon the strips 0, but will by its rollers F move easily thereon.
' In the construction shown the tray is provided on its under side and front near its ends with metal bands or plates G, and the rollers F are secured to the tray by riveting or otherwise fastening their brackets or supports to the said plates G, the rollers thereby being strongly and firmly supported.
In operation the tray, which is provided at its front endwith a hinged parasol-box, may, when the cover is raised, be pushed back thereinto, and the parasol-box may be thrown up onto the tray, so as to leave the opening into the trunk in large part unobstructed, permitting convenient access to the body of the trunk, as Will be'readily understood. As the cover is lowered it will push the tray back into place. In such operation as the cover starts to close it has a tendency to slightly lift the rear end of the tray. This movement would have a tendency in the absence of rollers F to cause the front edge of the tray tov bind upon the strips C; but the said rollers F prevent any such binding and enable the tray to be moved easily forward by the closing of the cover.
In defining some of the main novel features and improvements embodied in the present invention over that shown in my former patent, they may be stated to be in the arrangement of the tray-supporting strips at an incline, the provision of a roller at the front lower corner of the tray, and the reinforcing of such tray with metal plates or bands, and securing the supports or brackets of the tray-rollers to the said bands.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. The combination of the trunk having its ends provided with strips for supporting the tray, the tray provided with metal bands or bars G on its under side and front, and the 2. The improvement in trunks,-substanthe rollers F, supported at the front lower tially as described; consisting of the trunk corner of the'tray, all substantiall 'yas and for 10 proper, provided at its ends with tray-supthe purposes set forth. porting strips inclined upward from front to 5 rear and provided near their rear ends with HENRY W. ROUNTREE.
rollers, the tray supported upon the said Witnesses: strips and arranged to be moved when the O. M. FERRELL, cover is opened back partially thereinto, and SAML. A. NEALE.
