BED ATTACHMENT.
APPLICATION FILED 0012.16, 1911.
STA ES PTENT OFFICE.
JOSEPHINE B. LEEK, OF AMAGANSETT, NEW YORK.
' IBED ATTACHMENT.
Application filed October 16. 1911. Serial No. 654,959..
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPHINE B. Linux, a citizen of the United States, residing at Amagansett, in .the county of Suffolk, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip-' tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apper tains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a bed attachment and more especially to a device which is telescopically connected to the side 'rails of a bed and adapted to be extended for supportingthe bed clothes or linens for airing the same during the day or other such times as may be desired.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a novel form of extensible frame with extension rails at the sides thereof binations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, itbeing a still further object of the invention to provide'a device which will not be likely to get out of working order.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a perspec tive View of my improved attachment secured to a bed and disposed in an extended position. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the attachment or extension support in position and in contact with the foot frame of the bed. Fig. 3'is a cross sectional detailed View of one of the side railsof the bed with an extensionrail of the attachment or support engaged therein. Fig. 4 is a detailed view of a "side rail of a bed and extension A rail connected by a modified construction.
Referring to the drawings in detail, there is shown a bed frame of ordinary construc-' extending longitudinally'thereof for a portion of their lengths and communicating with the foot ends of the rails. An extension frame or support 14 forming an attachment for the bed for supporting bed clothes or linens for airing the same is provided for the bed, said frame structure 14 being constructed of suitable material having side posts 15 which are connected by an adjustable top bar 16 and a similar central cross bar 17 substantially on a line with the side bars 12 of the bed and the lower ends of the side posts are provided withball casters 18 to assist in the shifting thereof.
The extension frame 14 is of such dimensions that its top bar and side posts will fit inside of the side posts 19 and top connecting bar 20 of the foot frame 11 of the bed and is thus of reduced size relative to the foot frame and provided with longitudinal extension bars 21 threaded in the sides thereof in parallelrelation and formed with dove-tailed outer portions 22 which are longitudinally slidable in dove-tailed grooves 13 of the side bars 12 whereby the supporting or extension frame may be shifted longitudinally toward and away from the foot frame of the bed for the purposes mentioned. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings, the side rails of the bed are of rectangular form and are provided with extensions 23 in which the grooves 13 are formed While the extension rails 21 are of tubular form and provided with lateral extensions 24 which are provided with dove-tailed outer portions or extensions 22 for slidably engaging the dove-tailed grooves 13 as specified. The extension rails 21 are also provided with removable heads 25 which are. adapted to be secured in position after the extension rails are engaged with the side rails of the bed and are provided to prevent the extension bed from being moved too far out or displaced. In Fig. 4 a modified construction isshown in which a bed rail 26 is slidably engaged by an extension rail 27 which engages bearings or guides 28 carried by the rail 26 and having a cap 29 threaded on its end for a similar purpose as the removable caps or heads 25.
From the foregoing, description in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that a supporting frame in the form of an attachment telescopically mounted with relation to the side rails and foot frame of a bed is provided which may be very lightly constructed and thus easily manipulated while the particular form of connection by which the extension rails and side walls of the bed' are slidably connected serves to retain the parts in position for proper m'ovement and against lateral displacement or spreading.
'What is claimed is I g A bed attachment comprising the combination with a bed; of a sliding extension frame comprising sections slidably engaged,
extension rails detachably connected to said bed and slidably engaged with the side rails of the bed and detachable retaining mem- JOSEPHINE B. LEEK.
