NONSTRETCIABLE MATTRESS.
Apphcaton'led January 15, 1925.
To all unto-m t may concern.'
Be it knownthat I, JOSEPH AVRIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Nonstretchable Mattresses, of which the following isa specilication. v
This invention relates to improvements in mattresses.
lt is an object of the invention to provide means for preventing stretching of the mattress.
fr further object of the invention is to provide means for preventing stretching of the mattress, which means will in no way interfere with the top and bottom of the mattress, so that the top and bottom may assume projections and depressions formed by stuffing the mattress and drawing ties between the top and bottom of the mattress. In this mannerno creases will be formed upon the mattress, and the mattress will consequently present a neat and finished external appearance. e
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will be made manifest in the following detailed description and pointed out in the appended claims, reference is had to the accompanying drawings for an illustrative embodiment of the invention, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved mattress;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken substantially on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the accompanying drawings wherein similar` reference characters designate similar parts throughout, the mattress may consist of a top 10, a bottom 11, side walls 12, and end walls 13. These parts may be made of any suitable fabric, and the top and bottom may be secured to the side and end walls as by seams 14. To preveir?J stretching or lateral bulging of the mattress, non-stretchable tie members 16 extend transversely across the mattress adjacent the top and bottom thereof. These tie members are secured to the mattress only at their ends; and in the preferred form of construction, the ends of the tie members 16 are secured to the seams 111, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
Serial No. 2,529.
Above each of the tie members 16 there extends a sleeve 17 which may be formed of a single strip of fabric which is passed around the individual tie member and secured to the tcp or the bottom, as the case may be. The sleeves 17 are not secured to their respective tie members 16 but are slidable thereon.
A feature of the invention resides in making the tie members 16, which may be of tape or any other suitable material, of less length than the breadth of thc top or bottom of the mattress. In other words, the fabric forming the top and bottom of the-mattress has a certain amount of slack. As clearly shown upon the drawing, the tie members 16 together with their sleeves 17 are arranged intermediate the transverse rows of ties 18, which connect the bottom and the top of the mattress and usually are provided with small tuifs 19. y When the mattress is stuffed, the ties 18 tend` to draw the top and bottom of the mattress toward each other, so as to form depressions over the surface of the top and bottom. Because ofthe slack of the top and bottom with respect to the tiemembers 16, the fabric forming the top and bottom may assume the position into which it is drawn by the ties 18 without causing wrinlrling or other deformation. The sliding of the sleeves 17 upon the tie members 16 permits the fabric to accommodate itself to the po-- sitions into which it is drawn by the ties 18. At the same time the sleeves 17 prevent the fabric, forming the top and bottom of the mattress, from shifting or sliding longitudinally or lengthwise of the mattress.
From the above it is seen that an improved mattress is provided, which has tie members extending transversely thereacross, which tie members are secured to the mattress only at their ends and that means is secured to the top and the bottom of the mattress, which passes around the tie members 16, so as to permit sliding of the top and bottom with respect to the tie members,
but which will prevent longitudinal movement of the top and'bottom with respect to the tie members. Because of the fact that there are lno wrinkles in the fabric forming the top and the bottom, the mattress presente a finished, neat appearance, and at the same time will not stretch.
1t will be understood that various changrges` in the detail of construction may be made Without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
l claim:
'1. In a mattress, means for preventing stretching of the mattress, said means comprisingnon-stretchable tie members secured adjacent each end to one of the side Walls adjacent the top of the mattress, and means secured to the top of the. mattress and passing :around said tie members so as to be slidable thereon as and iter the purpose described. j
:In a mattress, means for preventing stretching "of the mattress, said means comprising' non-"stretc'hable tie members extending .transversely across the mattress and secured adjacent each end to a side Wall adjacent 'the bottom,.an'd means secured to the bottom of the mattress and *passing about the individual tie members so as to be slidable 'thereon as and for the purpose 'described c .3. In a mattress, means 'for preventing stretchimgr of the mattress, said `means comprising:non-stretchable tie members extending transversely across the mattress adjacent the 'top 'and bottom thereof, each tie memberhaving its ends secured 'to the side Walls of the mattress, and means secured to the top and bottom. et' the mattress and passingfabout said tie members as and for tl e purpose f-'described 4. a mattress, means 'for 'preventingV stretching 'of the mattress, said means comprisingnon-istretehab-le tie members extendi, c ing transversely across the mattress adjacent the top and bottom thereof, each tie member having its ends secured to the side Walls of the mattress, `and sleeves secured to the top and bottom of the mattress and Substantially enclosing said vtie members, said sleeves being slidable upon said tie members. f
5. In a mattress, means 'for preventing stretching ot' the mattress, said means comprising non-stretchable tie members extending transversely across the mattress 'adjacent 'the top andbottom thereoieach .tie member Vhaving; its-ends securedjto the side walls et the mattress, and 4sleeves secured to the top and bottom ot the mattress .and substai-itiaflly enclosing said `tie -members, said sleeves being slidab'le upon said 'tie members, said tie members, being?r in .iength less than the breadth `o-thetop and bottom et the mattress.
6. In a mattress, means for preventing stretching of the mattress, said means Icoinprisingl non-stretchable tic members extending transversely across the 'mattressladjacent the top and bottom thereof, .each tie member haring its ends 'secured to the side Walls et the .matt-ross, and sleeves secured to the top and bottom ot the mattress and substantially ,enclosing said 'tie members, said `sleeves being` slidable 'upon Vsaid .tie members,V said tie member *being ari-ringed between the ties connecting the top yand bot-- tom of tne mattress.
In testimony whereof-V I have signed my name tothis specification. j
