To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, JOHN C. NEwnonN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hagerman, in the county of Chaves and State of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattresses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

. My invention relates to improvements in mattresses and has special reference to that class of mattresses employing air as a filler.

An important object of my invention is to provide a pneumatic mattress which when not in use, may be folded up into a comact bundle, thus making its use desirable y soldiers and others who require the use of such a mattress which may be folded into a compact bundle.

. A further object of the invention is to provide a pneumatic mattress having a pillow formed integral therewith and near one end portion thereof.

A further object of the invention is to provide a pneumatic mattress of the character described which is neat in appearance, easy to inflate and comfortable to sleep on.

Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 4-4 of members 6 tapering'toward the lower ends thereof. The covering 7 of my improved pneumatic mattress is of a relatively stout cloth, preferably duck. The lower end 8 of the mattress may be rounded, as shown, or if desired may be flat.

The upper end of the mattress is provided with a transverse outwardly bulging portion 9 forming a pillow. the casing 7 is a rubber casing 10 adapted for the reception of air.

Secured to the end portion 11 of the mattress and extending through the rubber casing 10 is an air inlet valve 12, preferably of the check valve type. A centrally arranged aperture 13 adapted for the passage of air therethrough is normally closed by a disk 14.

A second disk 15 having apertures 16 extending therethrough is permanently Secured to the inner wall of the valve 12 which permits of the passage of air into the casing 10.

While I have shown a specific form of air inlet valve, it is obvious that any form of air inlet valve may be used.

In the use of my device, the mattress is laid out flat as shown in Fig. 1 and inflated to the desired pressure by any suitable means and it is ready for use.l It willbe apparent that the absence of rigid braces, etc., makes it possible to fold the mattress up into a very small space when not inflated.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: i

A mattress comprising an elongated body constructed from air retaining material and having one of its end walls of a less height than the other end wall so that the top wall will be disposed on an incline when said body rests on a flat support, a fabric cover for said body, means where-by said body may Arranged withinbe inflated and deiated, an elongated strip extending transversely of the body adjacent one end and having its end and side edges secured to said body to form a pillow, said body having an opening to permit air to enter said pillow from said body. i
