Application filedApril 2, 1918. Serial No. 226,228.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. PRICE, a citizen of the, United States, residing at Toplii'f, in the county of Tooele and State of Utah, have invented and useful Imrovements in Collapsible and Foldable Pneumatic Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved collapsible and foldable pneumatic bed for use by campers, tourists, l out of-doors, the object of the invention bed of this character light and portable, flated, or collapsed and which can be readily rolled or folded into small compass, so that the same can be easily carried on the running board of an automobile, and which also embodies t-arpaulins foruse on the ground, and for covering and also embodies blankets, sheets and the like, an means for detachably and. securely fastening-the tarpauhns,
heets to the bed or mattress.
which is extremely blankets and s With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawmgs,
Figure 1 is a plan view partly in section of a pneumatic bed constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a same.
Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views.
The bed or mattress 1 comprises a bottom 2 and a top 3, each of which is preferably made of mackintosh air tight material. Partition strips. 1 which are made of rubber arranged transversely between the bottom and top 0 the mattress in suitable spaced relation and have their upper and lower edges bent at reverse directions as at 5 and vulcanized or otherwise hermetically sealed or secured to the top and bottom of the mattress, so that air chambers 6 are formed transversely across the mattress and from end to end thereof. The partition strips terminate at their ends short of the sides of the mattress as at 7, so that communicating spaces are formed between the ends of the air chambers and along the sides of the mattress to enable the compressed air with which the mattress is inflated to be of the same pressure transverse sectional view of the which can be readily nin all of the air chambers and in all portions of the mattress, as will be understood. A suitable valve nipple 8 is attached to the mattress at one side to enable the same to be inflated as by means of an air pump, suc as used for inflating automobile tires. The width of the partition strips near the head of the mattress, as at 9, is greater than that of the other partition strips, so that the head of the mattress will form also a pillow.
The top and bottom of the mattress are united at points spaced from the extreme sides and ends thereof so that a 'flap 10 is formed which extends along the sides and also across the ends of the mattress. This flap is provided with snap fastening studs 11 which project upwardly therefrom and is also provided with snap fastening studs 12 which project downwardly therefrom. The said fastening studs are appropriately spacedapart, in practice, about six inches.
I also provide a tarpaul the mattress and under the same and to bear directly on the ground and eep the mattress dry. The said tarpaulin is of length' and width corresponding with the similar dimensions of the mattress nd is provided near its sides and ends with eyelets or socket fastenersl i for the reception of the snap fastening studs 12 so that said tarpaulin can be readily detachably secured to the mattress on the under side thereof.
1 also provide a top or covering tarpaulin 15 which is substantially like the under tarp'aulin 13 except that it is somewhat longer.
' The upper tarpaulin is also provided with snap eyelets or sockets 16 to receive the fasteners 11. The upper tarpaulin is sufficiently long to enable it to be tucked in at the foot of the mattress to thoroughly protect the user.
I also provide blankets, one or more, indicated at 18, and a sheet indicated at 19, which may be made of suitable material, either wool or cotton as may be preferre and each of which is provided with a binding 20 which extends around its sides and ends and which is preferably made of canvas. The said bindings of the blankets and sheet are provided with eyelets 21 at suitable spaced points through which the snap fastening studs 11 may be passed in order to securely fasten and hold said blankets and sheets as will be understood.
Vhc-u the mattress is deflated, the bed can be readily folded or rolled, compactly, and
