Description
March 22, 1966 c REED BED SPREAD AND BLANKET HOLDER Filed Sept. 3, 1964 ELAN KET- W PREAD R m m V m United States Patent 3 241,159 nan srnaan min BLANKET rrornnn James C. Reed, 1630 NW. 42nd St, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Filed Sept. 3, 1964, Ser. No. 394,151 Claims. ct. 5-318) My invention is directed toward a new device which I call a bed spread and blanket holder.
It is an object of my invention to provide a new and improved holder which when removably installed in a bed permits the spread and, if necessary, blanket or blankets, to be stored oil? the floor and off the bed proper in position to be pulled back onto the bed or returned to the holder rapidly and easily by anyone wishing to be on the bed.
Another object of my invention is to provide a new and improved holder of the character indicated which can be adjusted to be used with beds of varying width.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of my invention will now be explained with reference both to this specification and to the drawings Wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a plan view of my holder;
FIGURE 2 is a side view thereof;
FIGURE 3 is a perspective view thereof in retracted position; and
FIGURE 4 is an end view thereof.
Referring now to FIGURES 1-4, my holder is to be installed between bed mattress and bed spring 12. The holder comprises first and second hollow coplanar parallel tubes 14- and 16 which extend in the direction of bed length and which are secured to first and second coplanar rods 18 and 20 which are parallel to each other and which extend in the direction of bed width. The holder further comprises third and fourth hollow coplanar tubes 22 and 24 which are parallel to and coplanar with tubes 14 and 16. Tubes 22 and 24 are secured to third and fourth hollow coplanar rods 26 and 28 which are parallel to each other and extend in the direction of bed width, each hollow rod being so positioned as to receive and hold a corresponding solid rod, the rods being held in position by weight of the mattress.
Each of tubes 14, 16, 22 and 24 carries in the end remote from the rods a vertical pin 30. A corresponding one of slidable flat members 32, 34, 36 and 38 fits slidably within a corresponding one of tubes 14, 16, 22 and 24, each member having a slot extending in the direction of bed length and engaging the corresponding pin 30. These members are coplanar and extend in the direction of bed length. Members 32 and 34 are jointed at one end remote from the pin to an elongated solid shaft 40 extending in the direction of bed width. Members 36 and 38 are joined at an end remote from the pin to an elongated hollow shaft 42 also extending in the direction of bed width. Shaft 42 is so positioned as to receive and hold shaft 40. An L-shaped support arm 44 is secured to the free end of shaft 40. A second like arm 46 is secured to the free end of shaft 42. Each of these arms is hingedly secured to the corresponding shaft end. These arms have an extended position as shown in FIGURES 1 and in dotted line in FIGURE 3.
When the members have been pulled away from the tubes to the extreme or operative position at which the pins act as stops, bed spread 48 and where necessary blanket or blankets 50 can be stored temporarily as shown in FIGURE 2.
When these arms are in the with-drawn position indicated by the arrows in FIGURE 1, and members are pushed into the tubes to the retracted or closed position, rny holder is essentially invisible and out of the way.
While I have described my invention with particular reference to the drawings, my protection is to be limited only by the terms of the claims which follow.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In combination with a bed having bed springs and a bed mattress positioned above the springs, a bed spread and blanket holder interposed between the springs and mattress, said holder comprising 'a frame extending in the direction of bed width and carrying .a plurality of hollow parallel coplanar tubes extending in the direction of bed length and having open ends substantially aligned with the bottom end of the bed, each tube carrying a vertical pin, a like plurality of fiat elongated members, each member being slidable within a corresponding tube and having a slot extending in the direction of bed length which engages the pin of the corresponding tube.
2. The combination as set forth in claim 1 wherein said holder includes a second frame extending in the direction of bed width and secured to said members at the ends thereof which are remote from the corresponding tubes.
3. The combination as set forth in claim 2 wherein each of said frames has an extension in the direction of bed width which is adjustable in length to accommodate the holder to the actual bed width employed.
4. The combination as set forth in claim 3 wherein an Lashaped arm is secured to each end of the second frame, each arm being hinged to the corresponding end to have an extended position in the direction of bed length and a withdrawn position in the direction of bed width.
5. The combination as set forth in claim 4 wherein the arms when extended and the second frame can support a bed spread and blankets.
