FOLDING BED.
Applicationl filed August 1, 1913.
T0 all whom t may concern;
Be it known that l, CARL R. KLOK, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification.
ll/ly invention relates to table beds of that kind in which a folding or collapsible bed frame is normally concealed within the table, preferably within the box-like top thereof. It relates more particularly to table beds of this character in which the construction is such that the bed can be unfolded without the necessity of removing the various articles from the top of the table.
Generally stated, the object of my invention is to provide a novel and highly etlicient table bed of the foregoing general character.
Special objects are to provide a novel construction and arrangement whereby the table top swings about a vertical axis, or about a plurality of axes, if such is desirable, relative to the rectangular body frame which supports the table top in position for use, and whichsupports one end of the folding or collapsible bed frame; to provide a novel construction and arrangement whereby the table bed willstand horizontal at the head of the bed, when the latter is unfolded; to provide a novel construction and arrangement whereby the table top is divided into two sections which swing away from each other, in order to permit unfolding of the bed, and which then stand close together upon the floor at the head of the bed, thus permitting use ofthe table while the bed is unfolded.
It is also an object to provide certain details and features ofimprovement and conibinations tending to increase the general efficiency and serviceability of a table bed of this particular character.
To the foregoing and other useful ends my invention consistsin matters hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure l is a plan of a table bed embodying the principles of my invention, showing the bed unfolded, and showing the table top adjusted to a position at the head of the bed, a portion of the bed frame being Specification of Letters Patent.

broken awa-y between the ends thereof for convenience of illustration.
Fig. 2 isa section on line in Fig. 3, showing the bed folded and the table top in position to conceal the saine.
Fig. 3 is a section on line in Fig.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the said table bed, showing the bed unfolded, portion thereof being broken away for convenience of illustration.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section on line 5 5 inFig. l.
As thus illustrated, my invention com prises a rectangular table body A provided with fixed end and side walls a and al, and with a hinged or swinging side wall a2, which latter is adapted to swing downward and into the position shown in Fig. 5. Said frane is provided at the four cor ners thereof with legs o3 which are conw nected in pairs by the board or longitudinal member at, whereby a rigid body frame is pro-vided. The two table top sections (L5 are identical and are hinged to the side board all at as, whereby these two rectangular table top sections swing about vertical and parallel axes disposed at one side of the table, the edges of said sections meeting when they are in place above the table body. as shown more clearly in Fig. 2, wnereby a practically continuous table top is provided. Each table top section is provided with an end wall al, and with a sectional side wall o8, the said end and side VHalls being disposed immediatelyoutside of the walls t and 05.1 when the table top is in normal posi tion. The two outer corners of each table top section are provided with legs a9 which rest upon the floor at all times, and which are disposed innnediately outside of the legs a3, when the table is in normal or closed condition, as shown more clearly in Fig. 2, whereby the eight legs combine to provide in effect four table legs, one for each corner of the table. The sections a? of the table top are provided with pins L10 which serve as stops to limit the outward swing of the two sections, being disposed in position to extend downwardly and engage the corners of the body A when the sections are swung outward.
The bed comprises a folding bed frame B composed of angle iron sections b, b1 and Z22, the sections Z) and 52 being lll-shape in character, and the intermediate section b1 consisting of two parallel and straight pieces of angle iron. The bed frame sections thus provided are foldably connected together by links 3 and b4, the latter being somewhat shorter than the former, and the links 3 being pivotally connected with the adjacent ends of the sections b and b1, whereas the shorter links b4 are pivotally connected with the adjacent ends of the sections b1 and b2, whereby the frame folds with the section Z22 between the sections ZJ and b1, in the manner shown in Fig. 3. The said links 3 and b4 are each pivoted a distance back from the ends of the bed frame sections, whereby overlapping joints are provided, and wheref by the bed frame cannot fold downwardly,
and can only fold upwardly. The folding legs b5 are pivoted at upon the bed frame section b1, and the similar legs are pivoted at bs upon the outer or end section b2 of the bed frame. The links b9 are pivotally connected at one end to the upper ends of the legs b5, and are similarly connected at their other ends to the links b3, whereby said legs automatically fold parallel with the bed frame, when the latter is folded within the table. The links b1 are pivotally connected at one end to the upper ends of the legs 227, and have their other ends pivoted to the links b, whereby these legs also fold up automatically, when the bed frame is folded, in the manner shown in Fig. 3. The section is mounted in any suitable manner within the table body A, and it will also be understood that the folding angle iron bed frame vthus provided is equipped with a metallic fabric, of any suitable character, (not shown) which forms a support for the mattress C, and for the bedding. The provision of the links b3 and o4 insures sufficient space between the sections of the bed frame, when the bed is folded, to permit the mattress to be folded therewith, in the manner shown in Fig. 3, as well as either all or a part of the bedding. Thus the entire bed practically folds within and is concealed by the rectangular and box-like upper portion of the table.
IVith the foregoing construction it will be seen that the bed folds in such a manner as to permit the disposition of the flat bundle formed thereby within comparatively narrow limits. In other words, the bed folds up in such manner as to permit suitable knee clearance below the table top, permitting use of the same as an ordinary library or Writing table, the height being in accordance with the standard requirements in this respect. Thus the table is not only-of proper -character, in practically all respects, but also both being entirely suitable and satisfactory for their respective purposes.
In addition it will be seen that the bed can be unfolded without the necessity of removing the articles from the top. of the table. The two sections of the table top stand at the head of the bed when swung outward and are in position to be convenient for writing or other purposes. Also, and if desired, the two table tops sections can be swung together over the bed while the latter is eX- tended.
F rom the foregoing it will be seen, that the invention affords one method of combining a table with a bed, in a practical and simple way, and in a manner tending to solve some of the problemsinvolved in the production of a satisfactory combination piece of furniture of this character, but the invention is not, of course, limited to the exact construction shown and described.
`What I claim as my invention is l. A table for inclosing a folding bed, comprising two pivotally connected table sections, each section movable about a vertically disposed axis, said sections being provided with legs for supporting them in dis,- placed position when the bed is in use. Y
2. A table for inclosing a folding bed, comprising two pivotally connected table sections, each section movable about a vertically disposed axis, said table having a rectangular body frame provided with legs at the four corners thereof, adapted to support the sections, and the sections having legs to support them in displaced position.
3. A table for inclosing a folding bed, comprising two pivotally connected table sections, each section movable about a vertically disposed axis, said table having a rectangular body provided with legs at the four corners thereof, which body supports and forms a part of the bed, and the table sections each having legs at only two corners thereof, and each section having a flat top to form the upper surface of the table.
Signed by me at Chicago, Illinois, this 25th day of July, 1913. Y
