To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PETER E. Knonnrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Naperville, in the county of Dupage and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Table-Beds, &c., of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to convertible table-beds; and my primary object is to provide a structure of the character indicated which is durable, readily convertible, and which presents a pleasing appearance.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents an end elevational of a table-bed constructed in accordance with my invention, the structure being shown in open condition; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the structure partly folded; Fig. 3, a detail of a locking device for securing an auxiliary frame employed to a swinging bed-housing section employed; Fig. i, a broken plan view taken as indicated at line 4 of Fig. 1; Fig.'5, a broken plan section taken as indicated at line 5 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6, an enlarged broken vertical section, the section being taken parallel to one end of the table; Fig. 7, a broken section taken as indicated at line 7 of Fig. 2; Fig. 8, a broken elevational view, partly in section, showing the bed structure partly folded; Fig. 9, a broken sectional view taken VIGW as indicated at line 9 of Fig. 1; Fig. 10, a

In the embodiment shown, the invention comprises a table-frame A equipped with a movable top A which is capable of being swung to the standing position shown in Fig. 1; a stationary bed-housing section B extending parallel with the rear side of the table and constituting a panel; a swinging bed-housing section B connected by pivots 1 with. the end-portions of the table-frame near the base-portions of the end-standards; an auxiliary bed-supporting frame B linked to the part B and foldably related thereto; and a folding-bed C mounted on the members B and B The table-frame may be ofany approved construction. As shown, it comprises endstandards 2 which are rigidly connected at "their rear upper portions by a rail 3. The
end-standardsare also rigidly connected in front of the p1ece 3 by the stationary housing-section B, which constitutes a rear panel for the table. The rear upper rail 3 is equlpped with hinges Whose'short leaves 4:
are rigidly secured to the rail 3, while the long leaves 4: of the hinges are equipped with rollers 5 which engage channeled guides 6 that are rigidly secured to the rear portion of the lower surface of the table-top. This permits the table-top to swing to a standing position and to slide with relation to the hinges, so that the top will assume the standing position (inclining rearwardly .lightly) shown in Figs. 1 and 13. The table-top is equipped with a front rail 7 and blocks 8. The blocks 8 are adapted to embrace the upper portion of the housingsection B when it is in the standing position shown in Fig. 12. The blocks8 are beveled tilt:
as indicated at 8*, to enable the table-top to slide over the member T3 in the operation of opening the table-top.
The housing-section B is preferably in the form of a box whose bottom 9 serves as a front panel for the table. The end-portions of the box are connected near their rear or lowerextremities, through the medium of thepivots 1, with the lower portions of the end-standards of the table. The pivots 1 may comprise bolts which securely connect the box B to the endstandards of the table-frame. Normally, the box-form member B is disposed in a vertical plane, as shown in Fig. 12. It is equipped at its upper portion with short legs 10 adapted to rest uponthe floor when the member 13 is swung to the horizontal position shown in Fig. 6.

Legs 15 have their upper ends provided with extensions which are connected (Fig. 6)' by links 18 with the front ends of levers 19 whose rear ends are connected, by pivots 20, with fittings 21 which are secured to the end-members of the frame B The levers 19 are provided at their intermediate portions with slots 22 engaged by cam-studs 23 carried by links 24 whose lower ends are connected by pivots 25 to the ears which depend from the fittings 21. The upper ends of the links 24 are pivotally connected with a section of the folding-bed.
The folding-bed C comprises a mainheadsection 26; a main intermediate section 27; a main foot-section 28; a spacing section 29 which connects the sections 26 and 27; and
a spacing section 30 which connects the sections 27 and 28. The section 26 is of U-form and has the intermediate portions of its arms mounted on elbow-levers 31 which are joined by pivots 32 to depending ears carried by the brackets 33 which are secured to the front corners of the box B The spacing section 29 is supported by pivots 29 on standards,
- or hangers, 34,-secured to the rear portion of the frame B and suitably trussed or braced with relation thereto. The rear ends of the bars constituting the section 29' are connected by pivots 35 with the front ends of the arms of the section 26. The levers 31 are connected at their elbow-portions by links 36 to the brackets 34. The main intermediate section 27 is connected by pivots 37 with the spacing section 29, and by pivots 38 with the spacing section 30.

buckling when the bed-structure is in the ex- The auxiliary bed-supporting frame B is adapted to fold into parallel relation with the housing-section B and to be locked thereto in the manner shown in Fig. 2, after which the housing-section B may be swung to the vertical position shown in Fig. 12 parallel with the stationary section B to which the section B is releasably locked. As will be understood from Figs. 1-3, 7, and 12, the member B is equipped near its outer rail .(assuming the structure to be in open condition), with a pair of bell-crank lockmg pawls 46, whose short arms are equipped with nose-portions 47 affording locking shoulders adapted to engage locking-plates or sockets 48 with which the rear portions of the end-members of the box B are provided at their upper edges. With the long arms of the locking pawls 46 is connected a strap 49 adapted to effect release of the locking pawls. The strap 49 extends across the back side of the member B in the manner indicated in Figs. 2 and 7, so that the strap can be readily grasped when it is desired to release the member 13 from the member B The pawls 46 are automatically thrown to the locking position by springs 50 (see Fig. 3). The lower rear corner of the frame B is equipped with spring-catches 51 (Fig. 1) which are adapted to engage stationary catches 52 carried by the upper portion of the stationary housing-section B (Fig. 12).
When the structure is in the folded condition shown in Fig. 12, it may be converted to bed-form by lifting the front edge of the table-top slightly and shoving the table-top rearwardly, and then turning the table-top to the standing position shown in Fig. 1. The b'ed-structure may then be unfolded by swinging the housing-section B downwardly from the position shown in Fig. 12 to the position shown in Fig. 2, the springcatches 51 releasing, when force is applied. Through the medium of the strap 49, the auxiliary bed-supporting frame B is then released from the housing-section B and swung to the position-shown in Fig. 8, and finally to the position shown in Fig. 1, after which the foot-section 28 is released from the intermediate section 27 and extended in the manner shown in Fig. 1. The arms 43 may be released from the locking studs 45 by manipulating the legs 40. The folding bed frame is equipped with the usual flexible bottom, or wire fabric, 53. The headsection 26 is connected by spring-coils 54 to standards 55 which rise from the rear corners of the box B The upper ends of the standards 55 are connected, by spring-coils, 56, with clips 57 which are secured to the lower portion of the stationary rear panel B. The springs 54 aid in the operation of lifting the head-section 26 of the bed out of the box B in the unfolding operation; and the springs 56 aid in the operation of turning the swinging housing-section B to a vertical position.
The operation of converting the structure ite-nae from bed-form to table-form will be understood without further description.
The bed-section 27 is equipped with gravity locking-pawls 57 (Figs. 1 and 8), which drop into locking engagement with the looking arms l3 when the section 27 is raised to a vertical position, as shown in Fig. 8.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessary limitation should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible, in view of the prior art.
What I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. The combination with a table having a movable top, of a bed-housing disposed beneath said top and having a downwardly swinging sectionfand a folding bed carried by said swinging section and comprising a plurality of foldably related bed-sections.

The combination with a table having a movable top, of a bed' housing disposed beneath said top and having a swinging section connected at its lower portion to the ends of the table frame, and a folding bed carried by said swinging section and comprising a plurality of foldably related bedsections.
3. The combination with a table having a' movable top, of a bed-housing disposed beneath said top and having a swinging section connected at its lower portion to the ends of the table frame, and a folding bed carried by said swinging section and comprising a plurality of main sections and spacing sections uniting them, said sections being united by pivots extending longitudinally with relation to the table.
4. The combination with a table having a movable top, of a bed-housing dis osed be neath said top, comprising a fixe vertical Section and a downwardly swinging section, and a folding bed carried by said swinging section and comprising a plurality of foldably related bed-sections.

In a structure of the character set forth, the combination with a frame, of a housing section pivotally connected therewith and adapted to swing from a horizontal position to a vertical position, an auxiliary bed-supporting frame foldably connected with said housing-section, and a -folding-bed mounted on said housing-section and said auxiliary frame and comprising a plurality of foldahly related bed-sections. 9. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination with a frame, of a swinging housing-section adapted to be turned from a horizontal position to a standing position, an auxiliary bed-supporting frame foldably related to said housingsection, means for locking said auxiliary frame to said housing-section in a folded position, and a folding bed comprising a plurality of foldably related bed-sections mounted on said housing-section and auxiliary bed-supporting frame.
10. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination with a frame, of a swinging housing-section, an auxiliary bed supporting frame foldably related thereto, means for locking said auxiliary .bed-snpporting frame to said housing-section when said parts are in folded relation, a folding bed comprising a plurality of foldably re lated bed-sections mounted on said housingsection and auxiliary frame, and means forreleasably securing said housing-section in the standing position. i

In a structure of the characterset forth, the combination with a frame, of a housing-section connected therewith adapted to swing from a horizontal to a standing position, a spring connecting said housingsection and said frame, said spring adapted to aid in turning the housing-section to the standing position, and a folding bed connected with said housing-section and comprising a plurality of foldably related bedsections.
12. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination with a frame, of a ElO housing-section connected therewith adapted to swing from a horizontal to a standing position, a spring connecting said housing-section and said frame, said spring adapted to aid in turning the housing-section to the standing position, an auxiliary bed-supporting frame foldably related to said housing-section, and 'afolding bed comprising a plurality of foldably related bed-sections mounted on said housing-sec= tion and auxiliary frame.
