I FOLDING BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan.1,19j18.
Application filed September 5, 1916, Serial No. 118,464. Renewed December 3, 1917. Serial No. 205,247.
To all whom it may concern Be it. known that I, Josnrn KozA'rnx, a
subject of the Czar-of Russia, residing at New Kensington, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certainnew and usefullmprove ments in Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in folding beds.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a folding bed adapted to automatically open upon releasing conveniently positioned retaining members, thus providing a bed normally consuming but small space and readily shiftable-to' the full size of a bed.
A further object of the device is to provide a bed having a normally closed extensible portion readily releasable when desired, means being arranged for projecting the extension to its operative position upon being manually released.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and then claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a vertical central sectional view taken through the device when extended, parts being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of an end portion of the device when closed, illustrating the retaining latch.
Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are detail sectional views taken upon lines IV-IV, V-V, and VI-VI respectively, of Fig. 1.
Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail perspective View of the roller bearing mounting for the extension, and,
Fig. 8 is an enlarged detail horizontal sectional view of the latch member, as illustrated in Fig. 3.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the device broadly consists of a rectangular bed frame or main body 10 arranged with foot and head boards 11 and 12 at the opposite ends thereof, and a side board 13 at its rear side while an extension or auxiliary bed frame 14 is slidably attached thereto,
at the opposite front side thereof.
7 The extension 14 is substantially U-shaped having a front side 15 normally-overlying the side rail 15 of the main-body 10, the front side having depending legs 16 attached adjacent its-.opposite ends, opposite end boards 17 ,being provided for the said exe tension slidably arranged inwardly of the forward corner posts 18 of the main bed body 10.. Casters 19 are provided for the legs '16 while the ends of theextension14 are arranged with strips 20 positioned beneath and parallelwith the said ends 17 connected thereto by means of brackets 21.
Opposite rai1s22 are secured to the inner:
faces of the corner posts 18 and 34, and are provided with grooves 23 on their under sides for the reception of the strips 20 while grooves 24 upon the upper sides of the rails 22 are adapted to receive depending lugs 25 upon the ends 17 positioned intermediate pairs of rollers 26 carried by the said ends 17 and adapted to travel upon the upper edges of the rails 22. In this manner, the extension 14 is anti-frictionally mounted and guided upon the rails 22 for sliding movement inwardly and outwardly between the bed ends 11 and 12. The ends 17 are provided with opposite outwardly-extending projections 27 employed as stops for limiting the outward movement of the extension 14- and provided with keeper sockets 28 therein for the reception of latch blocks 29 hereinafter referred to, the free inner ends of the said projections being beveled as at 30 adapted for engaging the beveled inner faces 31 of the blocks 29 during the closing of the extension. Expansion springs 32 are arranged against the rear edges of the ends 17 with their rear ends seated within recesses 33 in the rear posts 34 of the bed 10. Each of the blocks 29 is provided with an operating rod 35 laterally slidable through a bracket 36 upon the adjacent inner face of the end of the bed and pivoted as at 37 adj acent its outer end with the adjacent forward post 18, the rod freely extending through a slot 38 in the said post and provided with an operating handle 39 upon its outwardly projecting free end. Supporting members 40 are conveniently carried by the bed members 10 and 14 adapted for supporting springs and any desirable form of bed bottom.
The complete operation of the device will releases "the blocks 29, allowing the springs 32 to project'the extension 14 to its out-Ward position forming a l full-si'zed bed structure, the device being 1 easily operable forming a compact article of furniture W .1 losed position.
What I claim as new is 1 1; A bed comprising a rectangular frame having ends-provided With'corner posts rails slotted upon their upper and lower Ledges carried by the'zsaid cornerposts, an extension having 'en'd members slidably" arranged inwardly between the said posts, guide strips upon the extension supported from and spaced beneath the ends' thereof,
' the said strips being 'guidingly "arranged 001m: of thtlplmt-m'ay be obtained tor' flvelcents each, by addressing the Commissioner An inward hen in. its
Within the grooves upon the bottoms of the said rails, anti-friction rollers carried by the said extension ends positioned upon the tops 0f the said rails, and projecting lugs between the said rollers guidingly arranged in the-grooves in the upper edges of: said rails.
2. A bedcoinprising a rectangular "frame having ends provided With corner posts,
slotted rails carried by the'sa idcorner posts,
an extension having end members slidably arranged inwardly between the said post's, guide strips upon "the extension,' thesai 1:
' strips being arrangedwithin thegrooves'ofl the said" rails, anti friction irollers carried by the said extension endspositioned upon the tops of the said rails, and "projecting lugs between the said rollers'guidinglyarranged in the grooves at one side of said rails.
In'testi'mon'y whereof I affix my signature.
