Be it known that 51, FRANCIS A. SoHNEI- DER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Display Device, Sign, &c., of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists of a display device,

signs, etc., composed of a plurality of members, on one of which is a plurality of pictorial illustrations'of different natures in sections, and on the other member means adapted to expose and obscure certain of the sections whereby by the shifting of either member either picture may be presented to view to all intents in its fullness, while the other picture remains concealed.

The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be mem ers of the device in separated condition.

Fig. 5 represents a longitudinal section on line 5-5 Fig. 1.

Similar numerals of reference indicate poses appears in its entirety through the corresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawings a 1 and 2 designate the front and rear memloid, or other suitable material. The piece 1- has in it a series of slots or openings 3, leaving between them the cross bars 4. On the piece 2 is lithographed or otherwise printed or produced, the representations of a flag 5 and the stafi, a bust 6 of a human being and transversely extending stripes 7, which latter are separated from each other, leaving between them on the back ground of the piece 2 the spaces 8, said spaces and stripes being in harmony with the slots 3 and cross bar 4;, of the piece 1. The latter has the piece 1 movable thereon so that in one position of the piece 2, the cross bars of the piece 1 may cover the stripes 7, and the slots of said piece 1 may see the spasm 8 of the piece 2,

and in another position of said piece 2, the

cross bars of the piece 1 may cover thespaces 8, and the slots 3 may expose the stripes 7 of said piece 2.

It will be noticed on reference. to Fig. '3 that the representation of the flag 5 on the piece 2 is divided, and portions of the same are on the stripes 7. The representation of the bust 6 on the piece 2 is divided and portions of the same are on the spaces 8;. It will now be seen that the flag and the bust are represented insections, the representations of the sections of the bust alternating with the representations of the sections of the flag consequently when the piece 2 is moved in the present case upwardly, the

' cross bars 4 are caused to cover the spaces 8,

and consequently the representation ofthe sections of the bust thereon, but the slots 3 are caused to uncover the stripes 7 and the representations of the sections ofthe flag thereon, consequently the flag complete to all intents and purposes appears through the piece 1, as shown in Fig. 1, the representa -tion of the bust being entirely concealed.-

When the'piece 2 is moved or shifted, in the present case downwardly, the cross bars 4 are'caused to cover the stripes 7, and consequently the representations of the sections of the flag thereon, but the slots 3 uncover the spaces 8, and the representations of the sections of the bust thereon, consequently the bust complete to all intents and purpiece 1, as shown in Fig. 2, the representatlonsof the flag being entirely concealed.

In order to connect the pieces there are-- formed on the upper and lower ortions of the piece 2 the oppositely projecting tabs or" tongues 9, and in the corresponding portions of the piece 1, the slits 10, in which latter shid tabs are insertible, both tabs Orton ues forming shoulders with the respective e ges of the rear piece and acting as stops to limit the motions of said piece in either direction and serving also to hold the pieces in engageedge of the front piece 1, so that it will lie flat against the bottom portion of said front piece and be guided thereon in its motions as 1t rides down and up and so keeps the rear piece close to the front piece and avoids irregular draft on the walls of the lower slit, while its extreme projecting lower portion provides a grasping surface of such extent as to prove a practical finger pulling piece or member for the manipulation of the device in both of its directions, while both tabswith the cooperation of the slits form simple and inexpensive connections for assembling the pieces and retaining them in position without liability to disconnect in imparting the sliding motions to either piece, which are features of value in a small article of the kind, especially when weight of material, cost of construction and durability of the made-up goods are concerned.

Attention is directed to the fact that the tabs which are both on the rear member are passed through the slots of the front member and appear on the front face thereof and rest on the same and are slidable thereon, whereby the two members may be easily as sembled and most readily connected with each other in a simple and practical manner without liability to be disconnected in the manipulation of the device in producing the metamorphoses. Furthermore, the longer tab constitutes both a pusher and a puller of the rear member, its projection below the front member making it visibly apparent for that purpose.

Having thus described my invention what ll claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a display device of the character stated, a ,pluralityof pieces shiftably con+ nected, one piece having thereon pictorial illustrations of different naturesin sections, the sections of one illustration alternating with the sections of the other illustration,

the other piece having thereon means Whereby one set of sections of a kind may be exposed presenting a comparatively complete illustration, and the other set of sections of a kind is concealed, the front piece having therein slits respectively in the top and bottom portions thereof, and the rear piece having on its top and bottom edges retaining and guiding tongues projecting respectively upwardly and downwardly from said edges forming stops therewith, said tongues being adapted to pass freely through said slits and being disposed slidingly on said top and bottom portions of the front face of said front piece.

A display device of the character stated composed of a plurality of pieces of suitable material movably connected, one of said pieces having thereon pictorial illustrations of different natures in transverse sections, the sections of one illustration alternating with the sections of the other illustra-' tion, means on the other piece adapted to uncover one set of sections and to conceal the other set of sections whereby one of the illustrations is presented to view comparatively in the complete form of the illustration, the front piece having therein slits respectively inthe top and bottom portions thereof, and the rear piece having on its top and bottom edges retaining and guiding tongues projecting respectively upwardly and downwardly from ,said edges forming stops therewith, said tongues being adapted to pass freely through said slits and being disposed slidingly on said top and bottom portions of the front face of said front piece, said tongues being of differential lengths, the longer tongue comprising also the operating finger member of the rear piece.
