Description

Patented March 26,
INVENTOR T L U A Z A B .L I.
p ovement in Electric Belts for the Body.
WITNESSES:
11M PHDTDLITHDWAPHI! 0 MYflZYfiMi/IET filMEJS/ JACQUES EDMUND BAZAULT, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ELECTRIC BELTS FOR THE BODY.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,006, dated March 26, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACQUES EDMUND BA- ZAULT, of Paris, France, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Belts and other Articles for Encircling the Body or Limbs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, and in which-'-- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal view from the inner side of a belt embodying my improvement; and Fig. 2, an edge view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
My invention, which is applicable to various articles for encircling the body and limbs of men and animals, including belts, Waistcoats, corsets, breast-pieces, caps, and bracelets, consists in a novel construction of such articles by filling or packing them with oxide of iron or iron sand, which may be found in a natural state, or magnetic mineral iron reduced to a powder, whereby, on said articles being worn about the body or limbs, the same will prove a; specific against seasickness and against various other affections or diseases both on land and water, and in mines, including yellow, typhus, and other fevers. The articles or wrappers containing the oxide of iron, or some steely magnetic mineral reduced to a powder of greater or less fineness, may be made of silk, hemp, linen, wool, cotton, skin, or other suitable material, and of different shapes and dimensions, according to the parts of the body to which they are designed to be applied.
For the purpose of illustration, the invention will here be described as applied to a belt to be worn about the body by persons during sea voyages and on other occasions. The belt represented in the accompanying drawing shows one form of construction, which may,
however, be more or less varied. The middle portion a a, which, as well as the other parts, contains the oxide of iron or other magnetic mineral, may be broader at a than at a, and the belt generally wider at one end than at the other. Said belt is doublestitched externally to hold the mineral powder in the best position for its proper action or effect when the belt is placed around the body. Straps b b are attached to the one end of the belt to fasten with buckles c c at the opposite end thereof, whereby therbelt may be adjusted at will. To prevent said belt from dropping by the weight of the mineral within it, the same may be kept at its proper height and place by buttons, cl d secured to it and fitting into holes in the suspenders. For persons who wear flannel Waistcoats next to the body, button-holes may be made in said garments at convenient places to receive the buttons cl d, and the suspenders be dispensed with.
It is not imperative that the oxide of iron or magnetic mineral filling should be extended throughout the belt or other article, as it may be in certain places only, forming pads, as it were, to particular spots or parts, and may either be applied singly or doubly to such parts.
What is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-- A belt or other article for encircling the body or limbs, or any part thereof, filled or packed with oxide of iron or magnetic mineral reduced to a powder, substantially as and for the purpose or purposes herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
J. E. BAZAULT.
