Description

. a. WEAVER. Q; JAR cmsumz,
APPLICATION FILED DEC- 29-1916.
Paianted Dec; 11, 1917.
lmm
To all whom z'tmay ooncermfl 1 Be it known that L: HARRY WEAvnmacitizen of the United States, residing atjYork Haven, in the countyof York'andState of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful following is a specification. i
The present invention contemplates the Improvements inJar-Closures, ofwhich the prov sion of a novel typeofjar closureprimarily adapted for'use on fruit ]ars.--"
The primary object of the invention residesv in the production of a closure of the above stated character; so designed whereby upon the application of the closure to the jar, willperform a positive and effective sealing of the jar in order to exclude the entrance of air to the contents-thereof.
To this end, use is made of a sectional cap so constructed whereby upon the opening of the cap or closure will necessitate lifting of the gasket from the mouth of the jar, thus preventing any liability of break ing the jar during the opening action of the ca Furthermore, it is my object to provide one of the cap sections with a locking bar, whereby upon the assemblage of the cap sections, the locking bar will serve to hold the same together and cause a lifting action to be imparted to the sealing gasket to release its engagement with the outer circumference of the mouth of the jar.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter be more fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.
Figure 1 is a detail perspective View of a portion of a jar showing the closure applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 illustrating the closure in perspective and the parts constituting the cap in separated position; and
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the inner section of the cap.
Fig. 4 is a detail view illustrating the application of the closure to the neck of a fruit jar, the neck, and one of the sections of the closure being illustrated in vertical section.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, in which like charsters o refereaee refer to correspondi g Y HARRY W AV R, orvoRiK'iiitvniv rnivivsvnvanin. J
Specification of Letters' Patent.
- of .said' opening parts in tlie several views,-j-the:jar herein ;,shov'vn and denoted by the-reference'character 5, is preferably adapted to contain fruit or similar canned goods and is provided: with; the usual exteriorly Jthreaded mouth portion ,6. v
outer section-,8 ofthe cap is of substantially circumference with threads 10 adaptingthe out-er section-to havea threaded connection V,ltl1:llh threaded mouth f the .jar,:while the; top; of the outer section is provided .With
an-enlarged circular opening 11, the walls beingsbeveledas indicated by the character 12. Formed at points diametrically opposite' the opening 11 are recesses 13through which the extendingextremities 14 of the bar 15 project, upon the initial association of the inner section 9 of thence upon a partial rotation'of the inner cap section,--the projecting extremities of the bar will repose upon the beveled circumference 12 of the opening of the outer sec- I tion 9.
The said inner cap section 9 constitutes a disk-shaped body portion 16 having formed v Patented'Deo. 11, 19 17. ApplicationfiledDecember29, 1916.., Seria1No. 139,557. 7
.-hollow annular form provided on. its inner 2 'the closure with the outer section 8, and
ed to receive the sealing gasket 19, hence upon the sealing, operation-of the jar, the inner cap section 9 is inserted within the mouth of said jar, reposing the gasket 19 upon the upper annular edge of said jar; After this operation, the outermost cap section 8 is placed over the inner section, the
bar is inserted within the notches and given a partial rotation, thus locking the inner cap section to the outer cap section. Hence,
by thescrewing of the outer cap section upon the jar will serve to tightly seal the jar in such a manner as to eXclude the entrance of air to the contents thereof. On the other, hand, upon the opening of the closure and the outermost section has been entirely u'nf screwed from the mouth of the 'jar, due .to
the locking engagement of the inner section with the outer capsection, tends to exert a pull or lifting action on the inner cap section, thus releaslng the seahng gasket from.
the mouth of the jar. It is obvious, by pro;
"viding' a closure of the structure above set forth, tends to permit'the sealing and unseahng of the ar in a slmple and expedr tious manner, and further prevents the I breaking of the jar during the detachment the'principl'es of operation of the invention,
together with the device which I nowconsiderto be the best embodiment thereof, I
desire to have it understood-that the device shown is, merelyillustrative, and thatsuch changes may be made when desired as are 7 (Copies of this patentmay be obtaincdffor Within the scope of the claim appended hereto. I l
What is claimed as new, is:
jar closure comprising an outer flanged section adapted to be screwed on the neck of the jar and formed in the top thereof with an opening, an inner section fitting loosely Within the outer section having a reduced lower portion extending within the mouth of the ar, a gasket carried by the reduced lower portion of said inner section, a bar formed-on the top' of the inner section'provlded with L shaped extremities having 1nterloc'king connection with the flanged outer section for permittingof the lifting of the gasket from the ar uponthe removal of the outer section ther'efronnand a pair of diametrically arrangedaspace'd notches formed in the flange of the out'er section of said-cap for permitting of'the connection or disco11 nection of the nner section therefrom.
ln testimony whereof I affix my signature.
