STOPPER FOR BOTTLES, VIALS, OR THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 17, 1918.
Application filed December 26, 1916-. Serial N 0. 138,745.
.ing drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of-this specification.
This invention relates, generally, to improvements in stoppers for bottles, vials, and the like; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel construction of bottle and stopper therefor, the
stopper especially being of such a construction that it can not be withdrawn from the neck of the bottle, vial, or the like, without an indication to the person desiring touse some of the contents of the bottle, vial, or
the like, that certain caution should be exercised in the use ofthe contents; in other words the manner of withdrawing the stopper being an indication that the contents of the bottle, vial, or the'like, are poisonous, or are otherwise objectionable.
The present invention, therefore, has for its principal object to provide a novel and simply-constructedbottle-neck and stopper therefor, which stopper can not be withdrawn from the neck-of the bottle, vial or the like, in the usualmanner, but for removal of the contents of the bottle or vial is adapted to be moved in opposite directions horizontally, and 'intermediately in; vertical directions, until the stopper, is finally dislodged from within the neck. of the bottle or vial, the unusual manner, employed in the withdrawal of the stopper indicating to'the operator, that the contents of the bottle or vial should first be examined, before taking,
thus obviating thecareless or incautious taking of poisonousor other deleterious contents of the bottle or vial. F
The invention has for its further object to provide a bottle I and novel stopper therefor which will not become dislodged from the neck of the bottle orvial in case the bottle or vial should be upset, thus provid ing a useful stopper for bottles containing acid, ink, or other liquid The novel stopper,
Other objects of this time not more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present invention.
Vith the various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel stopper hereinafter set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements'and combinations of the various devices and parts, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification and which cooperate one with the other in the manner set forth in said specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure I is a vertical sectional representation of the neck-portion of a suitable bottle provided with a stopper made according to the principles of the present invention, the stopper being represented partly in elevation and partly in section, and in its closin g relation within the mouth of the neck of the bottle.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the stopper, looking in the direction of the arrow w in said Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a similar view. of the stopper, looking in the direction .of the arrow 7 in said Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is an elevation of the side of the stopper opposite from that illustrated in said Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section of the neck of the bottle and of the stopper, saidsection being taken on line 55 in said Fig. 1.
Similar characters of reference are. em-
ployed in the said above described views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the said drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates a fragmentary portion of any suitable bottle, or the like, 2 is the neck thereof, and?) theinouth or pouring portion of the same, which, if desired, may be tapered, as at 4. At the desired location',.the neck of the bottle is provided with a suitable projection or teat, as 5, which projects laterally and inwardly from the inner surface of the neck of the bottle, substantially as-illustra'ted in Fig. 1 of'the drawings.
which may be of any suitable 'materlal, such as glass, or'any suitable plastic compound, is indicated in gen eral in Figs. 2; 3 and 4 of'the drawings by the reference-character 6, and the same comprises a shank 7 a tapered stopper-portion ,8, which may be brought into closing cm gagement with the tapered part 4 within the neck of the bottle, a suitably formed annular flange 9, and a suitably shaped fingerpiece 10. The said shank 7, which is preferably of slightly smaller cross-sectional area" than the cross-sectional area within the neck ofthe bottle, as indicate in Figs: 1 and- L of the drawings, is provided at its lower.
end-portion with a vertically disposed grooveor channel, as:-11, which communicates'at its: upper end with a horizontal and circumferentially disposed channel or groove 12, the end- portions 13 and 14 of which are separated by a rib or wall 15.- In communication with the said channel or groove 12 is a vertically disposed groove or channel, as 16, the upper end-portionof which communicates with another horizon.- tal and circumferentially disposed channel or groove 17, tllG'GllCl-IJOIUOIIS 18 and 19 of which are separated by a rib or vwall 20. In communication with the said channel or groove 17 is another vertically disposed groove or channel, as 21, the upper endportion of which communicateswith a third horizontal and :circumferentially disposed channel or groove 22, the end-portions 23 and-24 of which are separated by a rib or wall 25. In communication with this lastmentioned channel-or groove 22- is still another vertically disposed channel or. groove,
'as'26, which communlcates at its upper end with a fourth horizontal and circumferentially disposed channel-or groove,-as=27.
By-referring to the several'figuresof: the
drawings, it will thus be seen, that-the shanlsportion 7 of the stopper is made-with grooves or channels16, 21 and 26, as I am fully aware that the number of such grooves or channels, and of the said ribs -or walls may be suitably changed, and their general arrangement maybe raised", without departing from the scope of the present invention.
Themanner of inserting thestopper in the neck of the bottle, and the method of'removing the stopper therefrom, will be fully understood from an inspection of the sev- Oopiu'otthin patent maybe obtainedfor eral figures of the drawings, and therefore need not be further described in detail at this time, and 'it will 'be evident that in removing the stopper from the neck of the bottleit is necessary to variously turn the stopper from right to left, and from left to right, with intermittent vertical movements,
until the stopper .is withdrawn. To reinsert the stopper the same movements of the stopper are made to take place by the operator, except in the reverse directions.
From the foregoing description of the present invention it will be seen that I have devised a simply-constructed is especially adapted for use wlth bottles, vials, or the like, containing poisonous, or other compounds or mixtures which are deleterious-to health, or-are obnoxious, so
stopper which that a person inra hurry or in carelessness can not remove the stopper without first being warned of the poisonous or obnoxious.
contents of the bottle, vial, or the like, and, furthermore, a stopper is provided which can not accidentally fall from its position within the neck of the bottle, incase of accidentally upsetting the latter. a
1. "In combination with a bottle, vial or the like, .a stopper adapted to be inserted in the neck of the bottle, said stopper being formed with a plurality of horizontal and circumferentially disposed grooves or channels and connecting vertical grooves tor channels, and means-extending from'theneck of the-bottle intothe said grooves or channels, whereby the-stopper can be removedonly' by turning the stopper in: opposite directions and intermittently moving the stopper in the direction of. the longitu dinal axis of-the neck of the bottle, vial, or the-like,
2. :Ai stopper for bottles, vials, or the like, comprising a shank formed with a plurality of horizontal and circumferentially disposed grooves or channels and connecting vertical grooves or channels.v
3. A stopper for bottles, vials, or the like,
comprising a shank formed with a plurality of horizontal and circumferentiallydisposed grooves 01"}Cl12tIlI16lS and connecting vertical l grooves or channels, and a tapered stopperlike member connected with saidshank.
In testimony thatI claim the invention set forth above I have hereuntoset my hand this 20th day of-Dc'cember, 1916."
