TICKET HOLDER AND CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 11, 1917.
Application filed May 10, 1917. Serial No. 137,740.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIDNEY L. VAUGHAN,
a citizen of the United States of America,
residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ticket Holders and Cutters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a ticket holder and cutter. It is the primary object and purpose of the invention to provide a holder adapted to receive a block of tickets on which various characters indicative of cash fare collected are printed in a plurality of vertical columns, and to further provide the holder with an adjustable cutter member which may be moved to a plurality of positions such that any character in any column may be selected and the ticket torn or cut across, one part of it showing by the highest character thereon the amount of fare paid, while the other part is to be turned into the auditors office and has all of the remaining and higher characters printed thereon. Many other objects and purposes together with novel constructions by means of which the cutting member may be adjusted very simply and easily to a plurality of positions with respect to the ticket will more specifically appear from the following description of a preferred form of the device in which:
lFigures l, 2 and 3 are, respectively, front elevation side View, and rear elevation of the ticket holder made in accordance with my invention and,
Figs. a, 5, 6 and 7 are front elevations showingthe ticket holder applied to a block of tickets and with the movable cutter member adjusted to various positions for cutting the tickets at desired points.
Like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
The ticket holder is formed from sheet metal and includes in its construction a housinc: member having a front face 1 from each side edge of which are bent backwardly extending sides 2, each turned in back of the face it to form bearing segments 3 as best shown in Fig. 3. Substantially at the center of the face 1 an irregular shaped opening i made having two branches 4 and 5 with rounded ends located at an acute angle to each other but joining and formed with a rounded upper end 6 as shown in the drawmgs; Back of the face 1 a plate 7 1s mounted from which a stud 8 projects through said opening, there being a button 9 or the like fastened to the outer end of the stud and positioned over face 1 so that it may be engaged by the fingers to move the plate 7 to a number of positions.
The housing member described is adapted to hold a plurality of tickets 6 which are pressed against plate 7 by a plate 13 located loosely between sides 5?, under the cutter plate 7 and at its ends extending a distance beyond each end of the housing face 1. The plate 13 has projections 1 lat each-side which come just beyond the ends of the sides 2 of the housing precluding separation therefrom. At each end the plate 13 is curved to the rear to form rounded ends as indicated at 15, and leaf springs 16 are connected at one end to one end of the plate 13 hearing at substantially their middle points against the inturned ledges 3 of the housing and at their opposite ends slidablyengaging against the opposite end of the plate 3 as shown. This permits the insertion of a block of tickets between plate 13 and the cutter member 7 and as the tickets are removed one at a time, plate 13 moves more and more closely to the cutter member. are of a width to pass freely between the sides 2 of the housing and are considerably longerthan the housing or the plate 13 and at each end extend a distance beyond the ticket holder. It is to be understood, however, that the construction of the ticket is in no way a feature of the present invention, it being the subject matter of a separate application for patent Ser. No. 167,811 filed May 10, 1917. It will be noted that on the tickets are printed four vertical columns of figures which are designed to include the various amounts of cash fare ordinarily collected by the conductor on an interurban railway. In practice these amounts may be made any desired amount to correspond to the various cash fares usually collected by The tickets indicated at 17 proper amount shows just above the plate whereupon it may be out along the cutting upper edge of the housing face 1. If an amount in the second column from the right is to be indicated th cutter plate is moved with reference to the ticket ubstantially as shown in Fig. 5, the plate being partially out along the upper edge of the housing 1 and the remainder around the projection or step 10 of the cutter plate 7. For the third column from the right the cutter plate is moved to a position with reference to the ticket like that shown in Fig. 7, that is, the cutter plate is moved over to the left from the position which it occupies in Fig. 5. And finally when the highest amount left is to beindicated in the fourth column the plate is moved upwardly with reference to the housing and located on the ticket as shown in Fig. 6, so as to leave the highest character on the upper severed portion of the ticket in the left hand column.
This ticket holder and cutter is of very simple construction and by means of a very simple adjustment of the cutting member may be used to divide tickets into two parts one of which will indicate the fare paid and adapted to be given to the passenger as a receipt and also for use as a hat check, while the remaining portion of the ticket is retained by the conductor and turned into the auditors oflice as usual. Some variations inminor detail of construction may be resorted to without departing from my invention and I accordngly do not wish to be limited other than is necessitated by the claims which define the invention.
I claim 1. A device of the character described comprising a housing having a face plate, a cutter member located back of and in contact with the face plate, means for adjusting the cutter member lengthwise and transversely of the i Gotten of this patent may be obtained for reassess prising a housing having a face plate with an opening therethrough, a cutter plate of less 1 width than the face plate located back of said face plate, a pin in the cutter plate extending through the opening in the face plate, means connected to the pin adapted for manual operation to change the position of said cutter plate, and means for holding and yieldingly pressing tickets against said cutter plate.
3. A device of the character described comprising a housing having a face plate, a cutter plate of less width than the face plat located back thereof, said cutter plate at one end being fashioned into a series of steps having cutting edges, and said face plate at its adjacent edge being also shaped to form a cutting edge, means operable from in front of the face plate for changing and adjusting the position of the cutter plate with respect to said face plate, and means to press tickets against said cutter plate.
4. A device of the character described including a housing comprising a face plate, sides depending therefrom, and a ledge turned inwardly from each side, a cutter plate of less width than the face plate positioned directly back thereof, means operable from in front of the face plate for adjusting the cutter plate to a plurality of positions, a holder plate of substantially the same width as the distance between the sides of the housing positioned back of the cutter plate, and spring means interposed between the holder plate and said ledges for yieldingly forcing said holder plate toward the cutter plate.
5. A device as claimed in claim f in which said holder plate is longer than said cutter or face plates and extends a distance beyond each end thereof, and lateral stops on the holder plate at each end of the housing.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
SIDNEY L. VAUGHAN.
