Be itknown that LALEXANDER D. J osLrN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new an d useful Improvement in Cash-Check I-Iolders and Cutters, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in devices for holding and severing tickets, checks, dto., and is an improvement in the construction of such devices shown in the patent to me, No. 467,936, dated February 2, 1892. Said patented holder embraces a partial boX or inclosing frame adapted to protect the tickets or checks, a severing-edge along which the tickets may be torn and a moving and severing punch or point projecting in front of said severing-edge. In my present invention I employ these same devices,though the movable point is supported in a somewhat different way.

My main object in the present invention has been to better adapt the holder to indicate Whether the fare paid by the passenger is ahalf-fare or afull fare. To this end I print upon the ticket or check the words Full7 and I-Ialf,7 and the severing-edge is adapted either to sever the check between said words or at one side of them, the intermediate severance indicating ahalf-fare and the side severance indicating a full fare. The severingv edge in order to enable it to make either of these severances at the will of the conductor is cut away for a portion of its length and provided with a movable section adapted to form a continuation of said severing-edge where it is cut away, this movable section in its normal position effecting one of the severances mentioned and in its changed position eecting the other severance. I prefer also to employ a plurality of punching-points instead oi the single one shown in my said patent, as that enables the conductor. before he begins to tear the check to position all the points properly, so that the tearing maybe a continuous operation from end to end of the paper instead of being divided up into several short operations with intervening adj ustments of the punching-point. The movable section may also be positioned prior to commencing the severance, so that both parts of the torn slip will indicate not only the amount paid, but also the fact as to its being a full or half fare, without any repositioning of the movable parts between the time the tearing is commenced at one end of the check or slip and its conclusion at the other. It is also desirable to indicate the date of the transaction between the conductor and passenger upon the cash-fare slip and hence I provide the slip with a row of Iigures representing the days of the month, located adjacent and parallel to the rear edge of the severing-blade, and in order that these numbers may be punched the rear of one of the movable points is provided with a projection adapted to sever the paper at the proper one of said numbers to indicate the date of the transaction. month and year can be otherwise marked upon the slip, or lthe names of the month and the year may be printed upon the ticket and punched by the conductor at some previous time.

In the accompanying drawings, I show at Figure l a plan of my improved holder. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the same, showing it empty. Fig. 3 is a section of one of the movable punches upon the line 3 3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4 shows one of the tickets or checks after it has been severed and removed from the holder.

My improved holder has been devised with special reference to its use with checks like those shown in Figs. 1 and 4, wherein X represents the check proper or voucher-slip, which after severance is delivered by the conductor to the passenger, and Y the stub, which is returned by the conductor to the auditor or other proper oflicer of the railroad. It may, however, be used with other checks and stubs.

The holder is provided with a suitable box or inclosing frame A, wherein a pile of checks may be inclosed sufficiently to prevent injury to them while the holder is carried in the pocket. This box forms the main portion of the holder and is preferably struck up from sheet metal. l

cars Z; formed of the same piece of metal as the blade, and it extends around one edge of the box A, as shown. At each corner of the box which it surrounds it passes through eyes (f rigid upon the box, and midway between these eyes it is provided with a bent-up por tion c', adapted to be sprung 'under the hook a of the box. IVhen engaged under this hook the spring is forced against the pile of tickets and maintains a constant pressure thereon, so that the tickets are at all times held against accidental slipping out or loss. The sides of the box or holder are notched, as shown at a', in order that the spring may be located wholly outside of the box and yet be able to maintain the pressure against the tickets so long as any remain in the holder.

The severing points or punches, of which I show three, are indicated at E E. They are preferably formed of sheet metal stamped into form and perforated to enable them to be threaded onto the rod D. Springs e are also placed inside these punches to create friction upon the rod, so that they may not slide too easily thereon, and be enabled when adjusted to retain their positions with suiiicient tenacity to overcome any tendency to displacement during the tearing operations. One of these punches is adapted to be used in severing the dollar-figures, another the dime-figures, and the third the cent-figures, and they are movable along the rod to any extent necessary for this purpose.

One of the punches is preferably provided with a rearward projection f, which may be used to tear the paper at that one of the row of numbers (shown at F) which represents the date of the transaction, a tear imparted by this projection f at the 30th day of the month being shown at f', Fig. 4. The month and the year may, if desired, be punched in advance of the use of the ticket, and when this has been done the conductor in order to indicate the full date of the transaction has only to use the projecting point f.

In order to make a better record of the character of the fare paid as toits being a half or full fare than is permitted or indicated in my said patent, I provide the severing-blade wi th a movable portion or section G, which is pref erably hinged to the body of the blade at g and provided with an upst-anding lip g, whereby it may be turned or positioned easily and readily. lThen in its normal position the movable section forms a continuation of the severing-edge of the bla-de and is adapted to sever the tickets along the dotted line h; but when the movable section is changed to the position in which it is shown at Fig. l then the severances follow the line t' of the blade, said line being preferably that of a cut-out portion of the severing-edge. The ticket or slip X Y being provided with the words Full and IIa-li' in proximity to each other and close to the Ordinar y line of separation, it will be seen that when the movable section G is in its normal position both the words Full and Half7 will be upon one side of the line of severance, and that when the movable section is adjusted toits changed position, as in Fig. l, the line of severance will be between said words, so that one of them will be left upon the stub and the other will be upon the part given to the passenger, both the stub and slip forming in either case a complete record of the amount paid and of the character of the fare.

In cutting out the movable section G a proj eeting point g3 is left thereon, which, when the section is turned back, as in Fig. 1, comes in contact with the end wall. of the box A, and prevents the section from being turned so far in that movement as to bring its operatinglip g against the box. My object in this is to avoid the inconvenience which would result if the lip g were allowed to move close against the wall of the box. The movable section is located beneath the main blade, as shown, in order that it may not interfere with the punching devices E.

In my former invention the blade was made of thick metal, slotted longitudinally to receive the movable punch, and sharpened along its acting edge. I have cheapened and otherwise materially improved the construction by forming the blade from thin sheetsteel, which requires no sharpening, and by supporting the movable punches on the rod D, thereby obviating also the slotting of the blade.

By means of the movable portion of the severing-edge a check for half-fare is issued, leaving the word Full showing upon a projecting part of the stub. This furnishes a positive verification to the auditors oflice, as without this projection the collection must be reported as a full fare. In the stub shown in my said patent the half-fare was indicated by a notch eut in it, which should leave a projection upon the passengers slip, but which could be formed in the stub after the passengers slip showing a full fare had been severed from it, and the ability to thus reduce the stub of the patent from a full to a half fare renders it unreliable as a means of verifying the conductors returns.

I claim- 1. The combination with a holder for cash fare slips, tickets, checks tbc., of a severing blade having a portion of its severing edge made movable, and one or more movable punches, substantially as specified.

2. The combination with a holder for cash fare slips, tickets, checks dac., of a severing blade having a portion of its severing edge made movable, and one or more movable punches E, said movable portion of the blade edge being adapted in one position to forma continuation of such edge, and in its changed position to effect a change in the plane of the severance, substantially as speciiied.

of its acting edge cut away, and a movable section G, adapted to form a continuation of the acting edge of the blade over the cut away portion, substantially as specified.

5. The combination with a holder of the kind described, of a severing blade having a portion of its tearing edge made movable for the purpose set forth, and one or more punches or severing points, movable along the blade and over the `movable section, substantially as specified.

6. The combination in a holder for tickets, checks, che., of a severing blade, a rod lying parallel with said blade, and one or more movable punching or severing points mounted to slide on said rod and projecting beyond the edge of the blade, substantially as specified.

7. The combination in a holder for tickets, checks, &c. of a severing blade, a rod lying parallel with said blade, and one or more movable punching or severing points mounted to slide on said rod and projecting beyond the edge of the blade, said points being provided with springs for creating friction upon the rod, substantially as specified.

8. In a holder of the kind described the combination with the severing blade, of the movable section Glocated below the blade and supported thereby, the punch or punches movable along the top of the blade and supported by the rod l), and said rod, substantially as specified.

9. In a holder of the kind described, the combination of the severing blade and the movable section both made of thin sheet metal, with the movable punches E and their supporting rod, substantially as specified.

10. In a holder of the kind described, the combination with the boX or frame and the severing blade, of the movable section G having a lip g and a stop g3, substantially as specified.
