, To all whom it camera:
. Be it known thatI, dorm .Rrrnhniin, ,a citizen of the "United States, and] a resident of Chicagoflnfthe county of Gookand State of Illinois, haveinvented certain new and This invention relates to improvements in a holding and punching deviceflfor that class of pay checks or tickets useddn .a large numberof restaurants, and sometimes in 1 other lines of business, which checks "or tickets have displayed onone of their faces in a row along one or both of their edges, a series of numerals some ofwhich increase numerically or by digits, while others thereof usually. increase from 5, in multiples of 5, to 100 or above. lhe principal object ofthe invention, is to provide a holder and punch of the above- ..named general character, which-shall. be
simple and inexpensive in construction, strong, durable and eiiicient in operation. withits parts so made and arranged that it can be conveniently fastened to, a waistband or belt on the body of the user and in such a position i that the checks held thereby will be protected from accidental dislocation, yet may be readily reached for removal from the holder or tablet one, at; a time.

provide fneans for punching the checks accurately at the desired points by the use of one hand only, ifdesired.
Other'objects and advantages of the invention, willbe disclosed in the subjoined description and explanation. .1
,111 the accompanying drawingwhich serves to illustrate an embodimentof the nvention, f r
Fi re 1, is a planview of the device, showing a tablet of checks held thereby Fig. 2, is a side view thereof. y Fig. 3, is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 3-8 of, Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows. 1
Fig. 4, is a cross-sectional View taken on line of Fig. 2, lookingin the direction indicated by the arrows, and ii H Fig. 5, is a detached view of one of the checks as it will appear after being punched by the device. I e v a Like numerals of reference, refer to'corresponding parts throughout the different views ofthe drawing.
The body or casing of the device is desig nated as a whole, by the reference numeral 10, and; includes an, elongated flat piece-of metal 11 which forms the bottom. o flthe holder for a tablet or pad 1210f checks or tickets 13, and a side plate 14: which forms thus exposing a portion of one of the sides of the pad or tablet 12 so that the checks 13 forming the same may be readily reached and removed fromthe pad, one atatiine. By reference to Fig. 3 of the drawing, it will be seen that the member 11 0f the body or casing is bent near one of its ends to form a substantiallyrectangular casing orbox 15 and that the upper horizontal portion of said member .11. and box isprojecteddongitudinally with respect to the inner lowerportion of the member 11. or bottofrnflof f the holder. and .in parallelism therewith, --as shown atlfj for. the purpose to be presently xp aine ,fiw t rrs eas er 9? .40 .curedat one of of themember 7 extension 28 which is fastened the inner end of That portion of the box adjacentto the 15 opposite the inner the same. 7 or strap 27 is provided with a hook 30' to the member or bottom 11 of the tablet holder is a spring 17 which projects at its free end to a point near the inner wall of the box 15 and has its free portionupwardly deflect-ed to rest against-the lowermost check of the pad or tablet as will be readily understood by; reference to Figs 8 ofthe drawing. The inner wall of the box 15, or the wall thereof adjacent to the inner end of the tablet 12, when the same is in position .in the holder therefor, is formed by means of a vertical plate: 18 which has at its upper portion a horizontal extension 19 underlying the extension 16 of the member 11 and may be soldered. or otherwise secured to the last named extension for thej 'aurpose of reinforcing the same. As shown the wall or plate 18 extends upwardly from the lower portiio'nlof the box 15 at the inner end of the sid'e pl'at'e 1 1 and this closes the boxlo and besides provides'a wall against which the tablet 12 may abut.
side plate 14: of the holder, which portion will'be termed the front part of the device, is closed by the pl ateor member19 which has an inturned 'flan'ge 20 vertically secured to. the inner surface of the wall of the box end of the side plate 1 1, see Figs. and 4 of the drawing. The
plate or member 19 is provided with a ver- 't'ica-lly disposed guide-way 21 which is substantially \l-shaped in cross-section and has its upper end open for the reception and operationof a similarly shaped plunger or punch 22 which has its lower end slightly inwardly beveled asat 23to' correspond with the inclination or beveled upper portion of an opening 24 in the lower portion of the guide-Way 21 for the plungeror punch. Se-
its ends to the flange 2O 19 is a coiled spring 25 which is located within the box 15 and has its other end securedto the upper portion of the plunger or punch 22 just below a head or thumb piece 26 with which the upper portion or the plunger is provided, for the purpose of depressing the same. The wall of the box or casing 15"opposite the mem ber 19 and gu de-way2l' is.formed by means of a plate or strap 27 which is provided at its lower portion with a horizontal by means of a screw 29 to the bottom of the box or cas ing. 15 and extends overan opening in the lower end of the guide-way 21 so as to close The upper portionof the plate e gage a waist-band or belt or pocket of theuser. j v j Each of the checks. or tickets 13 forming the pads or tablets 12 is transversely perforated or weakened near one of its ends as at 31, see Fig. 3, so that when the tablet .body of the waiter or ling the checks or tickets to be torn 011' one at a time.
.From the foregoing and by reference to the drawings, it will be readily understood and clearly seen, that the hook 30 of the device may be placed over a belt or waistband or in the vest pocket of the user, when it is apparent that the device will. be held in substantially a horizontal position with one ofthe sidesof the tablet against the user, while the other side of the tablet will be protected by the si de plate 14, yet in such a manner, as to permit the checks or tickets 13 to be easily reached and torn off one at a time. \Vhen it is desired to punch out a number or numbers onthe check, this can be done by placing'the torn ofl' check horizontally in the flared opening or slot 24-, when by depressing the punch 22 by applying pressure to the head 26 thereof, it is evident that a. V shaped opening or openings will be formed in the edge or edges of the check so as to indicate the number or numbers desired.
The clippings or pieces punched out of the checks will be retained by the box 15 thus preventing them falling on the floor, and it is obvious that they can be removed from the box or casing by removing the plate .or strap 27, or if desired, the tablet 12, it. being understood that the plate 18 does not entirely close the opening in the box 15 in which it is located.
Having thus fully described my inven tion, what I claim as new and desire to so cure by LettersPatent is 1. A holder and punch for checks or tickets consistingof a body having at one of its ends an overlying part and a casing, a guide-way in one of the walls of the easing having an opening near one of its ends and a punch slidably mounted in said guideway.
' 2. A holder and punch for checks or tickets consisting of an elongated body having at one of its edgesa transversely extended overlying member and a casing, a guide way in one oi the walls of said casing having an opening near one of its ends, a spring onthe floor of the body, and a. spring-actumounted in said guideabutment and a part extended transversely Within the casing and secured at one of its thereof near one end of sand abutment, a ends to the same and at Its other end to caslng on the body at said end, a guide on sald punch.
one of the Walls of said casing having an JOHN RHKONEN. opening near one of its ends, a spring on Witnesses:
the floor of the body, a punch slidably CHAS. C. TILLMAN,
mounted on said guide, and a spring located S. F. PUZICK.
