Description

W. S. LARCOM.
CHECK HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED mac. 26.1917.
Patented July 8, 1919.
THE COLUMBIA rL/mommpn no. WASHINGTON. 114 c,
WILLIAM SCHEIDEL LARCOM, OF NOGALES, ARIZONA.
CHECK-HOLIDER.
Specification of Letters l atent.
Patented July 8, 1919.
Application filed December 26, 1917. Serial No. 208,901.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM SCHEIDEL LARCOM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nogales, in the county of Santa Cruz and State of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful IIHPIOX'GIHGlltS in Check-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to check holding devices and it is the principal object of the invention to provide a device for temporarily holding the hat checks commonly used by railway conductors as a means for indicating the points of destination of the various passengers and also for indicating those passengers who have paid their fares, the device being of such construction as will permit the check to be conveniently retained and when ;desired, easily removed therefrom.
Another and equally important object of the invention is to provide a holder of the character mentioned having yieldable means for securing the checks therein and permitting a check to be withdrawn without danger of displacing the others.
All of the foregoing together with additional advantageous details and arrangement of parts of the preferred embodiment of my invention will be clear from the specific description hereinafter contained, when read in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part thereof, wherein said embodiment of the invention is illustrated for the purpose of facilitating a full understanding of the present improvements.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective of the device,
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the same, and,
Fig. 3 is ahorizontal section therethrough.
Having more particular reference to the drawings, in connection with which like reference characters will designate corresponding parts in the several views, 1 represents the frame of the improved holder, which as will be noted, is substantially rectangular in shape and is formed from a piece of metal bent upon itself and has ears 2 formed on the free ends of the same, which ears are adapted to be engaged with a closure piece 3 arranged over the open end of the frame and also carrying spaced ears 4 adapted to be bent over the adjacent portions of the sides of the frame 1.
Slidably mounted upon the opposite sides of the frame is a follower plate or bracket 5, it being noted in this connection, that the said plate is provided with openings 6 of a size to permit the free passage of the opposite sides of the frame therethrough. The marginal portions of the follower plate are bent upwardly as at 7, thereby serving as means for preventing lateral displacement of the ticket or check 0 arranged thereon; one of said marginal portions being curved to fit the hand of a user.
To facilitate handling of the device, a finger ring 8 or the like is secured to one flanged portion of the follower plate and as will be readily understood, is adapted to be engaged over one of the fingers of the users hand. An expansible coil spring 9 is en gaged at one end with the closure piece 3 and has its remaining end engaged with the adjacent portion of the slidable follower plate 5, thus, normally placing said plate under pressure and affording means for securely clamping the check therein and against the lower end of the frame 1.
From the foregoing, it will be readily understood that I have provided a novel device for temporarily but firmly securing the hat checks employed by railway conductors in a convenient manner and yet, allowing the same to be freely removed as used.
It is to be understood, that the scope of the application of the device is not necessarily limited to use as a check holding device, but that the same may be also advantageously used by pursers of steamships, waiters, etc.
The device, as hereinbefore stated, due to its construction may be readily transferred to the back of the hand of a user while entries are made in record books or the like, or when it is desired to have the palm of the hand free for other purposes.
hlanifestly, the construction shown is ca pable of considerable modification and such modification as is within the scope of my claim, I consider within the spirit of my invention.
I claim A device of the character described in cludlng a substantially rectangular frame composed of a strip of metal bent intermediate its ends to form end and side portions, a closure strip engageable with the free ends 10 of the frame, a follower plate slidable on the opposite sides of the frame, the marginal portions of the follower plate being flanged, tension means engaged with the follower plate, and engaging means secured to one flanged marginal portion of said follower plate.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature hereto.
WILLIAM SOHEIDEL LAROOM.
