ERNEST P. VINCENT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CLOTHES-HANGER. I
Application filed February 4, 1916.
. ing. v
In the accompanying drawings T have illustrated in Figure 1 a perspective view of an embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a view of the hanger shown in Fig. 1 when closed or folded conveniently to be placed in a grip or traveling bag. Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. 1 embodying modifications, and Fig. 4c shows the hanger in Fig. 3 when closed or folded. Fig. 5 is a cross section of a modified form of channel or bar which may be used. Fig. 6 illustrates another modification of bar. Fig. 7 is a detail, partly broken away, illustrating the application of suitable hangers or hooks which may be combined with the lower bar of the clothes hanger as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3. Fig. 8 is a cross section on the line 8-8 of Fig. 3 illustrating a modified form of locking means, and Fig. 9 is a cross section on the line 99 of Fig. 1 illustrating another form of locking means.
In the form of my invention illustrated in Fig. 1 the channels 1011 are preferably pivoted at 12 and the channel 10 is preferably cut away as indicated at 13. Upon the pivot 12 is preferably mounted a suitable hook such as 14, the upper end 15 of which is preferably pivoted at 16 as shown so as to enable the same to be closed in thus reducing the diameter of the hook and enabling the same to be compactly folded with the body of the hanger when not in use as shown in Fig. 2. 17-18 are channels pivoted at their outer ends to the channels 10-11 as shown and at their inner ends at 19. The ends of said channels preferably overlap as shown to better advantage in Fig. 9 so that when in alinement as shown in Fig. 1 the depressions such as20-20 1nterlock; thus serving to maintain rigidly in alinement the channels 1718, and the chan- Specification of Letters Patent.

nel 17 is also preferably cut away at 21 so as to enable the shank 1 1 of the hook to pass therethrough when folded. 2223 are suitable hooks which may be suitably fastened within the channel by any suitable means such as the clip-2 1 shown to better advantage in Fig. 7. In order to fold or collapse the hanger it is only necessary to press slightly upwardly at the junction of the bars 17-18 allowing the same to pass within the channels 10-11 and bringing the opening 21 in line with the opening 13, after which the hook 14 15 may be collapsed; thus reducing its diameter and allowing it also to be pressed downwardly through the openings 13-21. When it is desired to use the hanger the finger nail may readily be introduced beneath the end 15 of the hook and the lower bar 1718 may readily be pulled out of the channels 1011; thus immediately placing the hanger in condition for use. The bars 1()11 serve conveniently for the coat and the bars 1718 for the trousers, while at the same time the hooks 22-23 may be used to suspend a skirt or any other garment.
In the modification shown ,in Fig. 3 it will be observed that the invention is susceptible of application by the use of wire in which case the coat hanger bars would preferably be bent substantially in U-shape as indicated by the reference characters 2526, the upper ends being turned over hook fashion to receive the pin 12 upon which the hook of the hanger may be pivotally mounted in the usual manner. The lower end of the U-shaped bars also serve as a bearing for the channels 1718 and on reference to Fig. 8 a modified form of locking device is observed to advantage. This comprises a catch such as 27 which may be riveted or secured in any suitable manner upon the outer bar 18 as indicated at 28, the offset of the catch 27 serving to engage the edge of the inner bar 17 as shown. The appearance of the wire hanger illustrated in Fig. 2 when collapsed is shown to better advantage in Fig. 4. The cross section of channel shown in Fig. 5 may be found a preferable form owing to the rounded shoulders such as 29 which will probably have less wear upon the clothing, or the deeper form of channel shown in Fig. 6 may be employed and a top surface of wood or other suitable material suitably rounded may be suitably secured thereto, the same being indicated by the ref erence character 30.
Of course it will be understood that various modifications may be made in the construction and details of my invention without departing from the spirit of the same as claimed.
I claim V 1. In an article of the class described, shoulder members hinged together whereby the same may be folded one substantially entirely within the other, and cross members adapted to be closed within said shoulder members when said article is folded.
2; i1 garmenthanger comprising channel shoulder members hinged together, a tw0- piece channel cross member pivoted at the center' and at the ends of said shoulder channels, said hanger being adapted to be Copies of this patent maybe obtained for folded substantially within one of said shoulder channels.
3. A garment hanger comprising channel shoulder members hinged together, said members substantially straight and adapted to be folded parallel, a two-piece channel book may be folded between said members I when said hanger is folded.
In testlmony whereof I hereunto afiix my s1gnature 1n the presence of two witnesses.
