To all whom t may concern:

it known that l, HERMAN Gr. PIEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in lVindow-Cleaners, of which the following is a specilicaf tion.

This invention has relation to window cleaners, and has for an object to provide an implement for the purpose specified, whereby windows may be elfectively and conveniently cleaned by a person operating from the interior of a room, to clean the outer Surfaces of the panes.

Another object of the invention which follows from the foregoing, is to provide an implement of the character described, having means for supporting a sponge or other absorbent element for washing the window panes, in addition to means for supporting a polishing element.

ln addition to the foregoing, my invention comprehends improvements in the details of construction, and arrangement of parts to be. hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

ln the accompanying drawings, in which similar and corresponding parts are designated by the same characters of reference throughout the several views in which they appear;

Figure 1 is a view is elevation, partly broken away of a window cleaning implement constructed in accordance with my invention.

l/Vith reference to the drawings, 1 indicates the handle of my implement, said handle being cut away at one end to receive the cut away portion 2 of a mating section 3, adapted to be Secured together in alinement by means of bolts 4: which extend through the cut away ends and are secured by thumb nuts 5 applied to the bolts.

The handle is preferably rounded in cross section, and formed with its opposite terminal squared at 6, and having a reduced squared portion 7 which extends through a Squared opening 8 in a headportion 9, which extends transversely across the ends of the handle and projects therebeyond.

passes through registrable openings in said block 10 and the head 9. rllhe block 10 thus serves as a movable Jaw to clamp, in co-action with the member 9, a sponge or other absorbent element 12, the jaws being clamped together by tightening a thumb nut 13 applied to the bolt 11. lt will be noted that as the block 10 is disposed against the inner face of the projecting end `of the head 9, the edge of the block 10 in engagement with the flat face of the squared portion 6 of the handle, provides means whereby the relation of the block 10 to its mating jaw is maintained.

The opposite end of the head 9 is apertured to receive a bolt 111 which also passes through apertures formed in an intermediate block 15, and a lower block 16, the blocks being disposed relative to the extension 9, in slightly spaced superposed relation. A cloth supporting block 17 is applied to the ends of the blocks 15 and 16, and the end of the head 9, said block 17 being disposed in a horizontal position, with reference to Fig. 1, with its breadth disposed in a vertical plane, and a polishing cloth of chamois or fabric 18 is stretched around the block 17, and the edges of the cloth inserted in the spaces between the head 9 and block 15, and between said block 15 and the block 16. By tightening a thumb nut 19 applied to the bolt 14, the edges of the cloth may be tightly gripped and the cloth stretched around the block.

ln view of the foregoing, the use of the implement should be quite obvious, by extending the implement through the window opening, the upper panes of a window may be readily cleaned by means of the sponge 12, and subsequently polished by the polishing cloth 18 by reversing the implement. rlhe extension 3 of the handle may be removed if desired, when the windows are not otherwise inaccessible, thereby rendering the implement more easily handled.

'llhus it will be seen, that l have provided a simple and convenient window cleaning implement, the length of whose handle ,may be varied, and having means for removably supporting and gripping a sponge, and a polishing element, the cloth of which may be replaced when soiled.

While l have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particular-ity, l realize that in practice various alterations thereover may' be made, and l therefore rem serve the right and privilege, of changing the form of the details of construction or otherwise altering the arrangement of the correlated parts, Without departing l'rom the spirit of the invention, or the scope of the appended Claim- Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire :to secure by Letters Patent is A window Clean-ing implement comprising a handle, a head thereon `forming a stationary jaw, movable blocks disposed in superposed relation beneath the jaw, a polishing block located at the ends of the blocks and jaw, a polishing cloth stretched over the polishing block and having its edges inserted between the blocks and jaw, and a bolt extending through the j aw and blocks, with a thumb nut applied to the bolt to securely .clamp the blocks together upon the cloth to stretch the same around the polishing block.
