BAG-FASTENER,
7 Specification of LJHIBIS Patent. Patented N 20; 1917,.
Application filed.- March 6, 1917. Serial N01. 152,461.
same. reference being bad to the accompany.
ing drawings, and to numerals of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in fasteners, and particularly to fasteners for Satchels, bags, pocket-books, and the like, and has for its object, the arrange ment of an improved structure, designed to co-act with the ordinary fastener of a satchel or the like, for preventing an acci dental loosening or unfastening of the same, and to facilitate the opening of the primary fastener, namelv, the lift look.
In its preferred embodiment, my improved device consists of a spring-actuated fastener. of the lift-lock type. secured toone of the frame members, and having holding engagement with the other frame member for holding said frame members. together, and a locking element pivotallv secured to said spring-actuated fastener foraddition ally holding said members together, the said locking element in general appearance: resembling what is known as a pull-piece, sothat when the same is in locked position or in engagement with the knobs or buttons on the frame members, it serves the purpose of additionally holding said members together, at the same time holding the spring actuated fastener in its locked position, and which. when disengaged. serves as a pullpiece for releasing the said spring-actuated fastener from its locked pos tion and separat ng the bag frame members.
Describing the invention in detail. reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification. wherein, like numerals of reference, indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings, and in which I Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a bag frame having applied thereto my int pro ed fastener.
Figs. 2 and 3 represent respectively, a side elevation and a plan view of the same.
Fig. 4 represents on an enlarged scale, a fragmentary sectional view taken on line of Fig. 3, looking in the. direction indicated by the arrows. I
Fig. 5 represents on an enlarged scale, a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 00-03 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Fig. 6 represents a front elevation ofa modified form of fastener, as applied to a section of a bag frame.
Figs. 7 and 8 represent end views thereof,
the fastener being shown in a tilted position in Fig. 8, preparatory to separating the frame sections; and
F ig. 9 represents a fragmentary sectional detailed view of the fastener.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 and 2 represent a pair of frame sections, which are pivotallyconnccted at their end portions in. the usual well-known manner. One of the said frame sections, as 2, is provided in its upper surface with a suitably arranged opening for the reception of an extension 3 formed on the spring-actuated catch memher, to be presently described, and the other frame section, as 1, is provided with a suitable nosing or projection 4:, or any other suitable means may be,v provided, designed to be brought into. holding engagement with a suitable recess or other means formed in the under side of the catch member to firmly secure the bag frame members or sections in locked position. v
desired form or configuration, consistsz referably or the ca 5, provided with an in-. tegral downwardly proJectmg spring hold-- ing member 3 at its rear end, for the reception of a suitable torsion-spring 6. said end passing through the spring holding memtubular. outwardly-extending: bearing is integrally formed with said catch member, to receive one end of the locking element 8.
A pair of'knobs or buttons 9 are fastened to,
the frame members 1, and which are. 159,. signed to have locking engagement with "96 The catch member, which may be of any:
said: element 8. when the parts. are as; shown Figs. 1 to 5 of the drawings.
The locking element 8 is pivotally connected to the tubular bearing 7, and is prefcrably made from a single piece of suitable material, formed with a central opening 10, from which extend curved engaging portions or recesses 11, designed to pass over the buttons or knobs 9, and to have locking engagement therewith. The other end of the locking element is preferably brought downwardly in close proximity to the frame member 1 and outwardly to provide a con venient finger or pull piece 14, thereby providing convenient means for manipulating the locking element, in order to disengage the same from the buttons or studs 9, and to further provide convenient means for manipulating the catch member, in order to disengage the same from the nose or locking projection 4 of the frame member 1, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 8 of the drawings.
In the modified form illustrated in Figs. 6 to 9 of the drawings, the locking element 12 differs somewhat from the locking element 8, in that it is not provided with a central opening 10. to expose the cap of the catch member. or the buttons or studs 9, but is shown as provided with a casing 13, said casing adapted to entirely inclose the catch member and buttons or knobs 9, the sides 15 of the said casing 13 engaging with knobs or buttons 9 to have locking engagement therewith. in somewhat the same manner as the engaging portions or recesses 11 of the locking element 8 have locking enga ement with the knobs 9.
It will thus be seen that with this device, a most novel lock is obtained. The fact of the locking element being pivotallv secured in a bearing 7 formed on the catch member and further having locking engagement with the knobs or buttons 9 on the frame member 1, makes the manipulation of the lock simple, and then when the locking: ele ment 8., by means of the pull piece 14, is thrown back or out of engagement with the buttons or knobs 9. the frame members are yet held by the catch member and the nos inn", until further pressure is brought to bear upon the locking element. whereby the catch member is lifted out of locking en gagement with the nosing".
lVhile I have shown my preferred forms, it will be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact embodiment shown, but may be modified in various ways in the scope of the accompanying claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Pat ent is 1. In combination two members movable relatively to each other, a spring-actuated fastener secured to one of said members (Copies of this patent may be memes holding said frame members together, the other frame member being provided with a pair of studs on the top thereof, said fastener being provided with an integral eX- tension forming a bearing, a locking element, one end of which is pivotally secured insaid bearing, the central portion being provided with stud-engaging means designed to receive and have holding engagement with the said studs on said frame member for additionally holdin said frame members together and independently operated from said fastener.
2. In combination two members movable relatively to each other, a spring-actuated fastener secured to one of said members holding said frame members together, the other frame m mber being provided with a pair of studs on the top thereof. said fastener being provided with an integral or;- tension forming a bearing, a locking ele ment, one end of which is pivotally secured to said bearing, said locking element overlying the tops of the frame section and pre vided with. engaging means designed to have holding engagement with the studs on one of said frame members for additionally holding said frame members together. the other end of Said locking member terminating in a pull piece and lying adjacent to the outside face of one of the frame membore.
3. In combination two members movable relatively to each other, a spring-actuatcd fastener secured to one of said members holding); said frame members together, the other frame member being provided with holding means on the top thereof. said fastener being provided with a bearing, a locking element, one end of which is pivot ally secured in said bearing and overlying said frame members and provided with a central opening through which the fastener passes and by means of which it is expo-sell said central opening being provided with diametrically-alined curved engaging portions or recesses, designed to pass over and have locking engagement with the said holding means on said frame member, the other end of said locking element lying adjacent to the outside face of one of the frame members.
This specification signed and witnessed this 28th day of February, 1917.
