UNITED STATES. PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID MORGENSTERN AND MAX BRILL, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
SATCHEL-LOCK.
Specification ofvLetters Patent.
Application filed February 1, 1912.
Patented Apr. 2, 1912.
Serial No. 674,736.
`5 New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of;New York, have invented a new and Improved Satchel-Lock, of which the following is a full, clear, and `exact description. v
` This invention relateslto locks and particularly to locks for satchels, bags, pocketbooks, and the like, and has for an object the arrangement of-an improved structure designed to co-act with the ordinary lock of a-'satchel for `preventing accidental loosening or unfastening of the same.
A further object' of the invention is to provide a .pivot-ally mounted auxiliary locking device in connection with a Satchel having the ordinary roverlapping locking knobs so that the auxiliary device may encircle the ordinary lock for preventing opening thereof. y
In carrying out the objects of the invention the same may be applied to any desired kind of satchelwhich is provided with a lock having the usual overlapping and interlocking knobs which normally ldefine a lock for a Satchel. is arranged to fit over the locking knobs and tofalso lit over retaining lugs which resiliently resist the removal of the encircling member. In order to have the encircling member always in place for proper application and removal, the same is pivotally secured to a satchel and when swung in one direction will positively prevent the lock from opening, but when swung in the opposite direction will permit the free opening oi the ordinary lock.
Apractical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference' indicate corresponding parts in all the'views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper part of a Satchel, showing an embodiment of the invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an enlarged top plan view of the ordinary lock of a satcheland associated parts having a duplicate lock embodying certain features of the invention applied thereto; and Fig. 3 is a section through Fig. 2on t-helline 3-3. i
Referring to the accompanyin drawings An encircling member desired kind having the usual metallic strips 3 and 4. Connected to the metallic strips 3 and 4 are locking knobs 5 and 6 which interlock in the usual manner. Associated with the interlocking knobs 5 and 6 'is an encircling auxiliary lockl7 formed with depending ears 8 and 9 'which are adapted to snap over pressed out portions 10 and 11. The pressed out portions 10 and 11 are preferably merely projections from the metallic strips 3 and 4, as clearly shown in Fig. 8. These prevent an accidental removal of the encircling auxiliary lock 7. Connected ,with the ear 8 is an arm 12 which is pivotally mounted at 13 to the metallic strip 4. The pivotal securing pin connected with the arm 12 at 13 is preferably extended entirely through the metallic strip 4 and upset or riveted on the opposite side so as to positively hold the auxiliary lock 7 in position.
In operation when the auxiliary lock`is in the position shown in Fig. 1, and it is desiredto open the satchel 1, the auxiliary lock is grasped and moved pivotally around the pivotal connection or pin 13. This will permit the opening of the interlocking knobs 5 and 6 in the usual manner. After the Satchel has been closed the auxiliary lock 7 may be turned pivotally over to thev position shown in Fig. 1, which will positively lock the Satchel against opening while in that position. In passing from the open position to the closed position the lower ends 14 and 15 of the ears 8 and 9 press against the pressed out portions 10 andll and move the same together as far as possible, before slipping or snapping4 past to the position shown in Fig. 3. By this means the auxiliarv lock or encircling member 7 is prevented from accidentally moving to an open position as it requires some appreciable pressure to move the ears 8 nd 9 past the pressed out portions 10 an 11.
Having thus described our invention.y we
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent '1. In a device of the character described, the combination with .a Satchel having a lock formed with interlocking knobs. of anV encircling auxiliary lock for normally preventing said knobs from separating.
' 2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a Satchel formed with a pair of interlocking snapping knobs,l of an encircling member itted over said knobs, v and means for pivotally connecting said'V encircling member to said Satchel whereby the encircling member may be moved pivotally` to and from a position encircling said knobs. ify l 3. In a lock for satchels, the combination with a Satchel of a pair of interlockingv clasping members, and an encircling member pivotally mounted onsaid Satchel and adapted to encircle said interlocking clasping members.
i 4.1In a lock for satchels,-the combinavtion vvith a Satchel having a pair of interlocking 'c'lasping members for normally holding said Satchel closed, of an encircling .member lfor said clasping members pivotcirclingl member adaptedv to encircle said clasping members, means for 'pivotally ally mounted on said satchel, and means for resisting an unlocking movement of the enmounting said encircling member on Said Satchel, and resilient projecting members projecting into the path off movement of Copies of thispatent may be .obtained for said encircling member for resisting the application and removal of said encircling 6. In a lock for satchels; the combination `with a Satchel having a pair' of interlock-` ing vclasping members, of a pivotally mounted encircling member formed with a pair of downwardly and inwardly projecting ears, 4
means for pivotally mounting said enclrf cling member on said satchel so that the same may move tov a 'position encircling Said clasping members, and means projecting from said Satchel inthe path of movement of said rst mentioned means for resisting the application and removal of the encircling memberl from a position' encircling the interlocking clasping members.l
