DOOR-LOCK.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BAYARD E. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Oak Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same,'referenc'e being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Considerable difficulty .has been experienced in securing a lock adapted for auto mobile doors which will withstand the severe conditions to which the same is subjected without becoming loose'and allowing the door torattle. In the past locks have been used in conjunction with bumper strips mounted upon the frame for the door against which the door is tightly thrust by the loclrin mechanism to revent rattlin of the door, but such strips soon become worn and fail in their purpose. Then, too, in some instances, provision is made by supplementary locking mechanism on the door to lock the door in an open position, thus increasing the complication of parts andin many instances taking the form of unsightly devices which also, when not in use, hang loosely in a manner to easily rattle and also may become caught upon the garments of persons entering or leaving the car.
It is an object therefore of this invention to construct a locking device for attachment to doors, windows, or the like, to positively lock the same in a closed position in a manner to prevent rattling thereof and also capable of locking the door in any open position desired.
It is also an object of this invention to construct a locking device embracingeccentrically operated means for positive engagement with a flexible element to lock the door in closed position and with means operating under pressure to clamp said'ele ment to hold the door in any open position of adjustment. v
It is also an object of this invention to provide a door locking device embracing telescoping members having concealed therein a flexible steel strap element which has sliding enga ement with a locking'device whereby mechanisms within the looking device may engage said steel strap to lock the door in an open or closed position,
positively holding the same in a fixed position when so locked.
It is also an object of this invention to construct a locking device embracing a plurality of locking mechanisms independently operatable to coact with a unitary flexible element to retain a door in open or closed position. Y

device wherein spring actuated latching mechanisms'are impelled into release position by eccentrically operating means acting against spring tension, said latching'means acting to en age through an aperture provided in a flexible element which is adjust ably connected to the door frame and havingslidable movement through the locking device whereby a yieldable but positive lock for the door is assured to hold the same closely in its framewhen closed.
It is finally an object of this invention to construct locking mechanisms actingyieldably to hold 'a door tightly closed in its frame or maintain the same in anopen. RClJUStQCl position in a manner to prevent rattling of the door;

As shown in the drawings:
The reference numeral 1, indicates as a whole a door or window mounted in a frame 2, by means of hinges 3, said door and frame forming a part of any structure whatsoever. Rigidly secured upon the door 1, is a casing comprising a front plate 4, having side walls 5, integral therewith and reinforced by integral ribs 6, and with a rear cover plate 7, adapted to be secured on said side walls 5, by means of screws 8, as shown in Fig. 8. Formed upon the outer surface of the wall 4, at one end thereof, is a boss 9, which is apertured and within which is journaled a short shaft 10, having a toothed eccentric 11, integral tierewith at one end, and a handle 12, for turn ing said shaft secured in any suitable mair ner, on the other end thereof.

The central portion of said plate 16, is cut away, as clearly shown in Figs. 3, 5, 6, and 10, and journaled between uprights 17, provided at one end of said plate is a long arm 18, provided with a latch member 19, and having also formed integral therewith two short arms or cam teeth 20. Said arm 18, at its free end, is provided with lateral extensions 21, which are recessed on their inner surfaces to receive seated therein coiled springs 22, as shown in Fig. 10, the other end of said springs seating in, recessed portions of the plate 16, said springs acting normally to impel said arm and latch 19, inwardly toward the plate 7. At the forward end of said plate 16, horizontal bosses 23, are formed on each side of the plate, and projecting outwardly therefrom in parallel relation are rods 24c, which slide through apertured brackets 25, provided on the inner surface of the wall of the casing.
lVound about each of said rods 24, are coiled compression springs .26, which, at their ends, bear against the lugs 23, and brackets 25, respectively, to resist movement of the plate 16, toward the eccentric 11, when said plate is moved in such a direction, due to rotation of the eccentric. A tooth or abutment 27, is provided on the interior of the casing at one end thereof, and is adapted to be engaged by the toothed eccentric, as clearly shown in Fig. 12, and when the eccentric bears against said tooth 27, the
pin 13, of the eccentric is past a dead center position. Consequently the pull on the eccentric exerted by the connecting rod 14, due to the compression springs 26, is re sisted, and the device thus retained under spring tension in. this position of adjustment with the plate 16, held toward the forward or eccentric end of the device.
Extending longitudinally slidably within the casing fiat against the rear'wall 7, thereof, is a flexible strap, preferably spring steel or the like, denoted by the reference numeral 28. Said strap is provided with a notch or aperture 29, therethrough, adapted to receive the latch 19, projected into engagementwith one edge thereof in the manner shown in Fig. 5, to lock the device when the handle 12, is rotated to ahorizontal position, and the cam into the position shown in Fig. 12. Integrally formed upon the rear end of the casing are eyes 30, adapted to receive engaged therebetween a tubular member 31, having a pin 32, extending through the end thereof affording, a pivotal connection between said tubular mem her and said eye members.- Said pin 32, is provided with a longitudinal slot therein through which said flexible strap element 28, extends, and the end of said strap is at tached to a plug element 33, threaded for adjustment into another tubular member 34, telescoped within said tubular member 31. Tightly threaded into the other end of said tubular member 34, is another plug 35, which fits into. a hinge bracket 36, and is adapted to receive a hinge pintle 37, inserted therethrough, said bracket being secured upon the frame 2, for the door or window upon which the device is used. As clearly shown in Fig. 9, the inner surface of the plate cover member 7, forming the inner wall of the casing, is grooved or recessed to receive the flexible strap 28, therein, so that proper disposition of said flexible element in all its positions within said casing is se cured. As clearly shown in Fig. 8, the rear cover plate 7, of the casing is provided with a pair of notches or slots '38, adapted to receive projected therethrough the arms 20, integral with the latch carrying arm 18, within the casing, to insure retraction of the latch member 19, from the slot 29, of the flexible element when the slidable plate 16, ismoved rearwa-rdly within said casing. A slot 39,.is also provided in said cover plate 7,10 afford clearance for the latch 19, when the same is projected through the slot provided therefor inthe strap, 28.
Another mechanism is provided for co action with the fiexible element 28, to effect locking of the door in any desired position,
and for this purpose an outwardlyprojecting boss 40, is formed at therear'end of the casing upon the front wall 4, and is apertured and internally threaded to receive a screw bolt 41, engaged therein, provided with an actuatlng head 42, whereby rotationof said bolt serves to move the same inwardly or outwardly, as the casemay be, in said boss. The inner end of said screw bolt 41, is provided'with a circular head 43, engaging in a T-shaped slot in a clamping foot 44, which, when thrust inwardly due to rotation of the screw bolt, is forced firmly against the flexible strap element 28, serving to clamp the same tightly'against the rear wall 7-, of the casing to hold the door in any position of adjustment. Said clamping foot 44, is prevented from longitudinal movement within the'casing, which might result in accidental disengagement thereof from the'head 43, by lugs 45, formed on each side thereof and bearing against the integral inwardly directed end walls 46, formed within the casing, as shown in Fig. 3, the arrangement, however, permitting movement of said clamping foot toward and away from the flexible strap element 28.
The operation is as follows: i
The device with the handle 12, in the horizontal position shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 5, is in locked position with the door closed, and in order to release the door to permit opening thereof, the handle 12, is rotated through an angle of ninety degrees and to a perpendicular position, thereby rotating the eccentric and permitting the plate 16, connected to the eccentric through the connecting rod 14, to move rearwardly, due both to rotation of the eccentric and also under the impulse of the compression springs 26. Such rearward movement of the plate 16, causes the latch member 19,- to move out of contact with the edge of the slot 29, in the flexible element '28, and the movement of the plate 16, continuing, also causes the arms 20, to contact the edge of the slots 38, in the cover plate 7, to causethe arm 18, and latch member 19, carried there by, to swing downwardly within'the casing, permitting free movement of the flexible strap element 28. As the door or window upon which the device is connected is opened, said flexible strap element 28, slides through the casing, and the plug member 38, to which it is securely connected, being mounted in the end of the tubular member 34, which is telescoped within the tubular member 31, said flexible strap element moves into orwithin said tubular member 31, as the telescoping elements are extended, thereby being concealed at all times and also protected from injury. The device acts automatically to lock the door when the door is swung-to closed positionydue to the fact that the slot 29, in the flexible element is swung into a registering position above forward end of the slot 29, in the flexible element. Such movement, of-course, .is resisted by the compression springs26, but due to the fact that theeccentric connection of the connecting rod on the cam element causes the cam to be disposed beyonda dead centersuch asshown inFig. 3, with the tooth of the cam 11, bearing against the abutment 27 within the casing, the compre's sion of said springs serves to hold the mechanisms in this. position until manually released by turningthe handle 12. If for any reason it is desired .to fix the door in any open position of adjustment, with the mechanisms controlled by the handle 12, in release position, the head 42, is rotated to move the screw bolt 4-1, inwardly, causing the clamping foot 44, to bear with pressure against the flexible element 28, holding the same frictionally from slidable movement within the casing and thus retaining the door in the position of adjustment desired. The interflttingtelescoping members 31 and 34, serve to protect and conceal the flexible strap member 28, and due to the manner in which the strap is connected to the member 34, by means of the threaded plug 33,-a feature of adjustment is obtained which permits the tension on the strapto be changed to suit conditions and takenp for wear of the parts. Said telescoping members also limit the opening movement of the door, thereby protecting the hinges from injury and also permitting. the use of a cheaper hinge than would otherwisebe necessary.
I am aware that various details of con struction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the-patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.'

1. In a door lock of heclass described a casing, a flexible element .slidably mounted therein, means adapted to positively engage said flexible-element to prevent movement through said oasing eccentrically operated mechanism for actuating said means and an independent 'mechanism for engaging; the flexible element to the casing. I

In a deviceof theclass described the combination with adoor and its frame, of a casing secured on one thereof, a flexible element 'slidably mounted within said casing aw L and connected to the other thereof, and a plurality of independently operated locking devices associated with said casing to coact with said flexible element to hold the door in any open position and in tightly closed position. 3; In a device of the class described the combination with a door and its frame; of a casing secured upon the door, a flexible element slidable through said casing, means connecting said flexible element withsaid frame, locking devices associated with said casing for coaction with said flexible element to interlock the same within said casing to prevent movement of the door, said locking devices comprising means clamping said element within the casing and means independently thereof for positively engaging with the element to tension the same and hold the door tightly closed in the frame.
4. In a device of the class described the combination with a door and its frame, of a casing mounted upon the door, telescoping elements connected to the frame and to said casing, a flexible element slidable within said casing and extending within said telescoping elements and positively connected to one thereof, locking devices associated with said casing, one adapted toclamp said flexible element within its casing to resist movement of the door and the other to positively interlock therewith to lock the door in closed position. v

In a device of the class described the combination with a door and its frame, of a casing mounted upon the door, telescoping elements connected to said casing and to the frame, a slidable element mounted within the casing and positively connected to one of said telescoping. elements, spring impelled latching means mounted within said casing for coaction with saidcflexible slidable element to interlock the same in said casing and prevent movement of the door,v and means wedgingly engaging the latching means tightly with said flexible element to draw the door snugly within its frame.

In a: device of the class described the combination with a door and its frame, of a. casing mounted upon the door, a flexible element slidable in the casing, means connecting the same in the door frame, independently operated locking devices in said casing for engagement and coaction with said flexible element to hold the doorin an open or closed position, eccentrically oper ated means for actuating certainof said de= vices, and mechanism operating to" retain said actuating means ina locked position to I retain the doorsnugly closed in its frame.
7. In a device of'the class described the combination with a movable element hingedly mounted in a frame,of a casing secured upon said element, telescoping tubes,
flexible means extending: into the .casingat its free end andextendinginto and secured to; one of; said tubes, and mechanism within the casing co-acti-ng with said vflexible means to lock the samevvithin the casing.
r 8. n a vdevice of. the class described the combination with a door andv its frame, of means pivoted on the frame and having sliding engagement with'the door, an automatically acting. latching device on said door for co-action with said means to engage therewith to prevent opening of the door beyond a certain position, manually operatable means for saidmechanisms to fcrce'the same closely into engagement with said means to tension the same and draw the door tightly closed and an independently actuated member for locking the door in any open position.

In a device'of the class; described the combination with adoor and its frame, of an element pivoted on the frame and having sliding engagement with the door, a'slidably mounted spring impelled automatically acting latch mounted on the door for co-actionawith said element, means manually actuating said latch to draw the same into close engagement with said element to tension said element and draw the door tightly closed and means independent of said latch adapted to co-act with the pivoted element to lock the door in any open position. 1
10; In a device of the class described the combination with a door and its frame, of telescoping tubes pivotally secured to the frame, means secured to one tube and slidable in the other and having sliding engagement with the door, spring impelled automatically acting latching mechanism mounted on the door adapted to interlock with saidmeans to limit the opening movement of the door, and eccentrically operated means'for manually operating said mechanism to tension and maintain tension upon said first mentioned means to draw and hold the door tightly closed in the frame.
11. In a device ofthe class described the combination with a door and its frame, of a locking device comprising means mounted on the frame and having sliding engagement with the door, automatically acting locking mechanism adapted to engage said means and adapted toxbe manually operated to tension said means to draw the door tightly closed, and an independently operated auxiliary locking device for co-action with said means to hold the same i1rmovable with respect'to said doortomaintain the door in any desired open position.

In a device of the class described the combination with a door and its frame, of telescoping tubes mounted on the frame, means rigidly secured to one tube having sliding engagement with the door, and automatically acting" latching mechanism dapted to engage said means to limit the opening movement thereof and adapted for manual actuation to tension said means and draw the door tightly closed in the frame.

A door lock comprising telescoping tubular members, a flexible member rigidly secured at one end to one of said tubular members, a casing slotted to receive the flexible member therein, means for engaging the flexible member to hold the door closed, and means in the casing for gripping the flexible member at any point to hold the door in any open position.

In a device of the class described, a flexible slotted member, a spring pressed latch for engaging in said slot, tension members in said casing, and a manually actuated eccentric adapted to co-act With said tension members adapted When the eccentrio is adjusted above a dead center to draw said spring pressed latch firmly into theslot against the flexible member.
15. In a door locking device, a casin a slotted member slidable therein, a latch pivoted to engage in said slot, co-actingmembers for forcing the latch in the slot to engage the slotted member and exert longitudinal tension thereon, and a manually operated means for exerting transverse tension on the slotted member in any open position of the door.
