JOHN P. DOUGHTEN, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOW-STANDS FOR WINDOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,555, dated March 12, 1872.
To alllwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN P. DOUGHTEN, of the city of Wilmin gton and State of Delaware, have invented anew and useful Improvement in ShowGases for Store-Windows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a true and correct description of the construction and operation of the same, reference beinghad to the annexed drawing making part and parcel of this my specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a movable and adjustable show-case for store-windows, for the purpose of displaying such goods, wares, or merchandise as are usually placed upon or Within store-windows, for the inspection and examination of persons passing by, on the outer side of the window, upon the sidewalk, so that, by such an arrangement and construction, the goods to be exhibited can easily be placed in a proper position upon the show-case upon its being withdrawn from the window to the inner side of the store-room, and readily rolled or moved into its appropriate position within the window. This show-case conforms substantially to the shape of the window, either square, circular, or other shape; and the said case can be conveniently hinged, at one side thereof, to the frame-work of the window. Another advantage possessed by this construction of show-case is leaving a free and open access to the store show-window, for the purpose of cleaning the same, While, at the sametime, the goods to be displayed are not required to be taken from their position upon the movable show-case, as, under the present and usual arrangement of store-Windows, is now required to be done.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the construction and operation of the same.
In the drawing, the inner and front portion of a store is represented, showing my invention of a show-case as applied to and connected with a show-window. A represents the window; I, the door opening upon the street or thoroughfare. B is the shelf of the movable show-case, which, when closed, is on a level with the bottom of the glass of the show-window. This shelf may be level or inclined upward toward the inner side of the casing of the glass doorE; and one side of the shelf is hinged at a on the framework of the glass door E. G is a frame-work composed of metallic rods, or of wood, wire, or other material, upon which goods, wares, and merchandise may be hung; and the same may be placed and arranged upon the shelf B according to the taste of the occupant, in order to display the same to persons passing by the window upon the sidewalk. When the goods, &c., are suitably arranged, the shelf, being supported by legs and rollers D D, can be rolled within the space formed by the projecting window A, and the glass door E closed and fastened. The rear and inner side of the shelf B can be paneled, and fills up the space between the glass door E and the floor, making a complete inside finish when the glass door is closed. The style and form of the frame-work O can be changed to suit the taste of the occupants of the store, and adapted to the various articles of merchandise desired to be displayed. The frame-work O can be extended in height and Width not to exceed the size of the glass door E.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The within-described method of construction and operation of show-cases for the display of goods, Wares, and merchandise within the showwindows of stores and buildings, consisting of the shelf B, frame 0, supports and rollers D D.
JOHN P. DOUGHTEN.
