Description

C. W. A. SCHRADER. REMOVABLE LOCKING GRIPVHANDLEl APPLICATION FILED NOVIS 1916. y
'Patented Oct. 2, 1917,v
sTAns ATr REMOVABLE LOCKING GRIP-HANDLE.
To all lwhom t may concern.' a
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN WILHELM AUGUST SGHRADER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, resident of Philadelphia, county offPhiladelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain lnew 3 and usefull Improvements in Removable Locking Grip- Handles, of which the following is a speci-y fication. f y
This invention relates to improvements in means for securing the handles of satchels, suitcases and the like, to thebody vportion thereof. y
The principal object is to provide means whereby the handle may be detachably engaged with the upper central portion of the satchel frame so that it may be readily removed at such times as may be desirable.
A second object is to provide means combined with the handle whereby the satchel may be maintained in a locked position when the handle is removed therefrom, the lock being operated by a definite manipulation of the connecting elements whereby the handle is attached to the satchel.
A further object is to provide such `combined handles and fastening means in forms economical to manufacture, which present an agreeable appearance and which effectively fulfil their purposes.
These and other like objects are obtained by the novel design, construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which:-
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the upper part of a Satchel having the handle attached at one end and detached at the other,
Fig. 2 is a fragmental perspective view showing one side of the satchel frame,
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the opposite or engaging side of the satchel frame.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinalvertical sectional view taken substantially on the center line of the fastening device, the parts being shown in an unlocked position, and
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through one of the escutcheons and locks, showing the latter in operative position.
In the drawings,`the sides of the satchel are indicated by the numerals 10 and 11, respectively, to the upturned portions of which are attached metallic plates 12 and 14, upon Specification of Lettersvratentv. I
,Patented oct. 2, 1917.
Application led November 13, 1916. Serial No. 130,993.
their inner sides, these plates being inthe form of longitudinal strips adapted to act as stiieners for lthe mouthV of' the satchel.
Other plates-15 and 16 are disposed upon the exterior of the vertical elements `of the satchels sides, each being formed with langes17 and 18, the former of which acts as -a V cover yor bridge over the openingV or mouth ofthe bag when the sides areI in a closed position, the element 17 overlying the narrow -ange 18 as is clearly evident in Fig-1.
- Attached to the flanged element 17 by means ofrivets 2l is an angular bracket 20, the same being open at the front side and having afliXed in the lower or base element 22, a pair of pins 23, coiled springs 24, surrounding thepins and abutting against the base element 22 so as to eXert an upward pressure against the plate 25, provided with vertical elements 26 adapted to enter the corresponding openings 27, formed in fixed lugs 28, secured within the bracket to the flangek 17. Attached centrally to the plate 25 is la stem 30 having a disk 31 secured at its upper end, the same being slidable Within the cylindrical portion 32 of the escutcheon and provided with flanges 33 riveted to the upper or outer side of theflange 17. Thus, the locking elements 26-may be forced downward by pressure applied to the disk 31 to such distance as to free the looped keepers 35, secured to the flange 18 the same having openings 36 adapted to be engaged by the elements 26,'when the satchel is in a closed position. The handle 38 of the bag is formed of straps having open looped ends 39 in which are hingedly engaged connecting loops 40, the lower elements being enveloped in the cylinder 42, having stems 43, connecting with the locking or key element 44, provided with oppositely disposed ends 45, having recesses 47 upon opposite sides, adapted to engage within the openings 48 formed in the top of the escutcheon 32.
In operation, the key element 42 is turned parallel with the bag frame, whereupon the key 44 may be inserted in the opening 48 and turned therein so as to stand transversely or crosswise of the opening through which it was entered, thus permitting the satchel to be raised by means of the handle. The disk 31 is pressed upwardly by means of the springs 24 to make contact with lugs 49 formed within the escutcheon, the height being such that the hook elements 36 may be engaged Within their keepers 27, but upon entering the keys the disk is pressed downward, momentarily. freeing the keepers 35 which are again raised into operative position upon the removal of the handle. Thus, it will be seen that the handle can be removed or applied with entire ease, and that the satchel will be in a looked position only when the handle is removed from the satchel, unlockingtaking place only by pressure of the keys.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to obtain by Letters Patent is l. The combination with a Satchel, and a removable handle, of a pair of escutcheons secured to one side of the satchel, a locking means carried below each of said escutcheons,
a substantially T-shaped key at each end of said handle, means within said escutcheon causing engagement of the locking device when said keys are removed.
2. In a satchel, the combination with a pair of escutcheons secured to the satchel frame, locking elements below said escutcheons, means for keeping said locking elementsA in a normally engaging position, a handle having engaging keys at both ends thereof, said keys being adapted to engage with said escutcheons and unlock said locking means. c
ln testimony whereof I have affixed my signatureI this sixth day of November, 1916, A. D.
CHRISTIAN WILHELM AUGUST SCHRADER.
