Description
KATE v`Koetsen, or ATCHIsoN, KANSAS.
VEIL.
Application led June 7, 1917. Serial No. 173,328.`
To allfwwm it may concern: t
i "Be it known that I, KATE KonLscI-I, a
`citizen `of the United States, 'residing at Atchison, `in theA county of Atchison and State of Kansas, have invented certain new `and usefullmprovements in Veils, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to head coverings and more particularly to a novel improvement in veils.
To this end, the invention contemplates a 'novelty in head vwear in the nature of a veil for covering both the head and face of the wearer, and, therefore, of special use when no hat is worn in the case of grown persons, and furthermore providing a veil articularly adapted for infants or ehildrien, which may be readily applied in a neat and comfortable manner, and which lwill effectively protectthe head and face. That is to say, the present invention aims to provide a veil which may be conveniently used by ladiesas a veil to protect the face and keep the hair in place when no hat isworn, While at thesame time, the invention is also particularly adapted to the needs of infants and small children. l'leretofore, in veiling the 4heads and faces of the latter', it has been the custom to tie the veil at the back of the neck, because of the usual absence of a hat or the like to support the veil. This tying of the veil at 'the back'oftheneck is often uncomfortable and bundlesome, and furthermore, theftying of the veil tight enough to keep it on is likely to draw the same so tightly "across the face of the infant as to interfere With its breathing, while on the other hand, if itis loose enough to be comfortable, it is difficult to keep the same in place.
Accordingly, the present invention aims to provide a veil Which is particularly designed to remedy the objections incident to the use of the present types of veils, and at the same time provide an article which is neat and attractive in appearance, easily applied, and comfortable.
With the above and other objects in view which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood,
the same consists in the novel construction,
combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
A preferred embodiment of the invention Specication of Letters Patent.
i Patented Oct. 2,
is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which: l
. Figure 1 is a perspective View illustrating the application of the veil to the head of an infant. 1 Fig. a perspective view of the veil before it is applied to the wearer,` and more clearly showing the fastening means therefor.
In carrying the present invention into effect, it is proposed to utilize any suitable and conventional veilingmaterial to form the body or veil portion proper designated generally as l,.and in order to give it the necessary shape and form to fit both the head. and face of the wearer, the sarneis fulled onto a suitable elastic retainer band designated in its entirety by the reference Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the parts throughout the several yfigures of character 2, and which provides a continuous holding edge.'
This retainer band 2 is continuous and may be of any suitableelastic material, such as cord or web, which will provide the necessary retaining action. However, it may consist of separate sections of elastic web` bing 3-3 of relatively narrow width whose opposite ends are connected to the inelastic connecting tabs 4-4 thereby providing a continuous retainer member having the necessary elasticity, while at the same time providing at diametrically opposite points, a readily available and convenient base to which the veil fastening means may be attached. This fastening means may be of any conventional form suited to the purpose. However, in order to provide for quick and easy fastening of the diametrically opposite points of the retainer band, it is preferred to use a conventional snap fastener, consisting of the usual stud member 5 and the spring eye member 6, which are respectively fastened to the opposite inelastic tabs il-4. If desired, the said tabs may be provided with suitable imitation servedthat the edge of the veil is preferably secured to a casing C which receives therein 'y the elastic stripsA 3, and like theiatter the ends of each section of the casing `are seg cured to the inelastic tabs 4. Thus the veil maybe attached in this manner yto the band for the greater part of its circumference but for the purpose of providing additional fullnessatthe sides of the veil, the edges thereof adjacent each tab are plaited and then secured to the tabs as shown.
Referring nov to, the manner of applying. the same to ,the head of the wearer, it Will be observed from Fig. l that the entire baglike veil portion y1 is` placed over the head and face of the infant, so as to completely cover its face and `head,` whereby oneportion of the retainer band- 2 will pass under the chin and thence rearwardly to encircle or embrace the neck, While the other half of the band fits around the back of the head, so'that the diametrically opposite points thereof may be brought together at the back of the neck to be fastened by means of the snap fastener elements 5 and 6. l/Vhen this retainer band or loop portion isy thus placed around the neck and head of the wearer and the opposite points thereof are secured together by `the snap fastener, there is provided a complete neck embracing .loop and a separate head encircling' loop, as shovvn in Fig. ly ofsthe drawings. f
From the foregoing it is thought that it will be readily apparent that the present invention provides a veil which may be easily and.y quickly applied to the head of the infant or small'r child, Without being uncomfortable, and that owing to the pres- 'e'nce of the elastic holding'y edge and the vention or scope vof the appended claims.
I'claiin: l. A head and face covering comprising a vveil element .having a continuous holding Yedge consisting of separate elastic elements attached to inelastic tab members, said tab members'being located at diametricallyy op'- positey points and carrying complemental fastening elements therewith.
2. A- head and y.face covering comprising a retainer band consisting of elastic strips having their ends connected to inelastic tabs, a casing on said elastic elements, a veil secured to said casing and gathered at a point adjacent each inelastic tab portion and also secured thereto, and complemental fasteningy elements carried by the inelasticftab portions of said retainer band. j,
