Description

w. Ii. wmmwis,
ROLLER SIDE BEARING FUR RAILWAY CARS.
. APPLICATION FILEII AUG.2I, 19M. Lgg@ Paentiedsept. I8, 191?.
IIIV
I \J I A \\\\\\\.,.V\\\. \J 4I mx //l/l NI W -IIIIHMIIIIHNIIII I IIIIIIII Il I rather 'what may be termed the pounding 'of the car on the side bearingroller, induces indentations into the soft metal track of the roller, when the latter is made of east steel or malleable iron, so'that it is desirable to' face Athe track upon which the roller rides with a steel plate harder than the materials of the casting.
I make the rocker plate l2 of steel, an cause it not only to perform the function of bringing the roller to its normal position, but also to act as theV facing' plate for the bearing and thus I salve expense in the cost of the bearing over otherdevices which seek to accomplish the same purposes.
The cost of labor in making my bearing is the minimum of any other bearing havingl anythino like the same or equivalent merits, since there is almost no labor 1n assembling the parts. The parts are simply and the bearing is finished.
In place of the rivet 9, I mayuse any other suitable means, such as a Cotter pin, bolt, keyror other locking device with which to dam oii the hole through which the pin is inserted. f i
Should the bearinpry need repairsatany time, the rivet 9 is removed and the pin driven out by any suitable tool, yinserted placed together andthe rivet 9 fastened,
through the hole f 16, thereby forcing *theL pin Sout 'of 'the housingy and thus freeing the roller and the plate. The rollers used in bearings of this kindare usuallyv made very hard so as to stand Without deformation. the pounding y that they receive in service.
In the side walls ot the boX of the casting 3, there are apertures 17 and 18 at the sides of the housing, andl 19 and 2O rat the These apertures permit the free es-l cape of any dirt Oriol-eign matter that might happen to come Within the. box in the housing. Y
It is desirable that a ,rocker plate be made as Jthin as can be made, and yet suiiiciently stil' to prevent its being bent or distorted under the load of the roller, for the reason that the thinner the plate, the lower its center of gravity and the.morerit acts in bringing the roller to its own'center. And when the thickness of this plate isal large percentage of the radius of the rollerfit seems to have much less effect to lturnA the roller to its normal position. "llhisfmzwbe due in part to the extra inertia and resistance in moving itself, 'and further to the fact thatthe vcenterof gravity of thethicker .Weight to return the roller to its position.
It is desirable tov have the engaging 'pro-i jections which Ainterlock the plate 12, and the casting 3 upon the casting and .have the holes in the plate instead of having'projee lplate is higherv up, and as the plate rocks, lit passes vthrough L less vdistance .of travel, givingle'ssfnloment in proportion .to its normal tions on the plate and holes in the. casting, The plate 1s more sensitive 1n the arrange-`- ment' as I have `shown than the other Way.
It is, cheaper also to make-the projections of the interlocking means, betweenthe plate 12 and housingl 3 Ourthe casting 4and make the 'hole in the plate.
I prefer to 'call the bottom of the houslng,` whereon rocks the plate 12, La track face'` as Will be notlced in the claims.
What I claim is: 1. 'In a device of the class described, the combination With a housing of a bottom track surface with upwardly extending pro-v Y box-like housinff' having at its bottom a a.
track surface and guideways in its lateral Walls,l of* a curved rocker plate resting upon said surface and provided with a series of recesses, and); weightreceiving roller resting upon the 'bon-care surface of said plate,
traveling alon; r said rguideways and held` therein against upward 'displacementisaid bottombeing provided with upwardly eX tending projections of a length not exceeding the thickness of the plate and adaptedV to lit loosely in said `recesses, respectively.
3. The combination with an. elongated box-like housing having at its bottom ai track surface, of a curved rocker plate restl ing. on that surface and a Vroller resting` upon the rocker plate "and held againstu'p-t Ward displacement, the ond walls of the housing being cut -aWav at their lower sid-usf below -and beyond the upwardly curved margins of the rocker plate.
