MILTON V. NOBLES, OF ELMIRA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BLANKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,007, dated February 27,1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILTON V. NoBLEs, of Elmira, in the county of Oheinun g and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Blankets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a perspective view of my invent-ion with the blanket rolled up. Fig. 2 is a view, showing the blanket when open. Fig. 3 is a view of the life-preserver.
My invention has relation to travelers blankets, and is embraced in the combination, as hereinafter described, of a blanket, hood, and collapsible pillow. My invention is designed for the use and comfort of persons traveling in the cars or other conveyances at night, or being otherwise circumstanced where the ordinary conveniences for sleeping are wanting, or for any reason undesirable.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents a blanket provided with a pocket, B, which is designed to contain an India-rubber pillow, O, which may be inflated for use by the breath blown through the tube D. The pillow is buttoned to the edge of the pocket, as shown. B designates a hood or night-cap, which is buttoned to the blanket at the mouth of the pocket, so as to cover the head resting on the pillow. When not in use the hood is to be placed within the pocket with the pillow. Fig. 1
shows the blanket rolled up and strapped for convenience in carrying.
My invention is useful for army purposes, or for the convenience oftourists or travelers crossing the plains who would be under the necessity of camping out. The addition of the pillow and hood creates but a slight extra expense, and their weight and bulk are imperceptible. Under some circumstances the pillow-case may be used for the purpose of containing a supply of water, and when inflated may also serve as a life-preserver in case of accident on board a boat. The pillow and hood may be used together without the blanket, as in hot weather when the blanket would not be desirable. In such cases the hood and pillow are to be buttoned together. The blanket and cap may be used together without the pillow, as where there is no room for the wearer to lie down or recline, or when the blanket is used as an outer garment to the wearer, riding on horseback or walking, during inclement weather. Finally, the hood may be dispensed with and the blanket and pillow used together.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
I claim, as an article of manufacture, the device consisting of the blanket A, with its pocket B containing the air-pillow 0, constructed and arranged as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
