MAHLON WARN E, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA. Letters Patent No. 83,227, dated -October 20, 1868.
' The Schedule referred to in thesevLetters Patent and making part of the same.
HOP-Q To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAHLON WARNE, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Head- Rest; and I do hereby declare the following 'to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention consists of a padded band, attached at its opposite ends to a steel bow, and adapted for being so connected to the roof or side of a car, in respect to the seats of the same, that, when adapted to 4the head, it will form a comfortable and elastic rest for the same, as fully described hereafter.
In order to enable others to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe the mode of constructing and using the same, reference beingA had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved headvFigure 2 a side view of the'same, and
Figure 3 aview showing the application of the invention.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the severalviews.
A is a band, of leather' or stout cloth, bound or otherwise ornamented on the edges a., andsuitably padded throughout its length, being wide in the centre, and narrowed down towards each end, as shown in iig. l.
B a leather-covered steel rod, bent to a bowshape, ...nd provided at its opposite ends with buttons c c, which, when passed through button-holes d al at the ends of the band A, prevent the latter and the rod from becoming disconnected.
A strap, C, of leather or other suitable material, and from four to iive feet in length, is passed round the rod B, and is provided with a slide r buckle, f, by which it may be lengthened or shortened, as required, and at the opposite end of the said strap is a ring, g, of gutta-per'oha or other elastic material.
The object of this invention is shown plainly in iig.
3, and it is applied as follows: The guttafpercha ring g is iirst attached to a hook in the roof of the car, or is hooked to one of the umbrella or parcel-racks, with which almost all cars are provided, afterA which the passenger passes the band A around his head, (the steel bow keeping. it properly distended,) and then b and may be substituted for the leather. strap C, in
which case an iron ring' or hook may take the place of the gutta-percha ring.
This invention is especially adapted for the use of passengers on night-trains, the padded lband serving to support the head as efectually and comfortably as would a rigid continuation of the back of the seat.
It should be understood that', when not in use, the band A can be unbuttoned from the steel rod, and the Whole packed in a small and portable shape.
I am aware that straps, adapted for attachment to 'the roof of a car, have heretofore been secured to caps to form head-rests, but the use of a cap for this purpose is objectionable, as the head is necessarily covered when it may not be desirable; the position of the head cannot be changed; while, a cap suitable for one person would not t another.
In the head-rest above described, the padded strip is held insuch a position by the metal bow that either the side or back of the head may be brought to bear upon the strip, while the head is not covered, and but one size of head-rest is required.
XVithout claiming broadly a head-rest, secured to a band, and adapted for attachment t0 the ceiling of a car,
I claim as'my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of a curved rod or bow, B, a padded strip,'A, secured at the ends tothe ends of the bow, and a strap secured to the bow, and adapted for attachment to the ceiling of a car, for the purpose specied.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
Witnesses: MAHLON WARNE.
JOHN WHITE, WM. A. STEEL.
